What do these weird codes on my transcript mean? My refund was approved then disappeared for 2022 filing

I filed my 2022 taxes through TurboTax back in April 2024. It was accepted right away and I was supposed to get a $4,876 refund. When I checked Where's My Refund a few days later, it showed my return was approved and my refund was scheduled to be issued on May 2nd. I was excited since I was planning to pay off some credit card debt. But May 2nd came and went - no deposit. I checked my transcript online and now I'm seeing all these weird codes I don't understand. There's a code 570 with a date of 05-20-24, and a code 971 with the same date. My refund amount is now showing $0 instead of the $4,876. I'm freaking out because I really need this money and I have no idea what's happening. Did I do something wrong? Will I still get my refund? Why did it change from approved to whatever this is?

Butch Sledgehammer

Those codes indicate that your refund is on hold pending review. Code 570 is a freeze on your account/refund, and code 971 means a notice has been issued to you explaining why. You should receive a letter from the IRS within the next couple of weeks explaining what's happening. There are several possibilities: - They may be verifying income or deductions you claimed - You might have a discrepancy between what you reported and what the IRS has on file - There could be an identity verification needed - They may be offsetting your refund against prior tax debts or other government debts Unfortunately, you'll need to wait for the letter to know for sure. Once you get it, you'll have instructions on how to resolve the issue. If you don't receive a letter in 3 weeks, call the IRS at 800-829-1040, but be prepared for long wait times.

Omg thank you. Ive been so worried! Do you know how long this typically takes to resolve? I really need this money soon.

It varies a lot - could be a few weeks if its simple, or several months if they need more documentation from you. The letter will give you a timeframe. Sorry I know thats not what you wanted to hear 😕

This happened to me last year. Call them now, don't wait 3 weeks for the letter! The sooner you address whatever the issue is, the quicker you'll get your refund.

I had the SAME ISSUE with the 570/971 combo. Got a letter saying they were reviewing my return. Took 4 months to resolve, got my refund eventually but had to provide extra documentation. The IRS is just overwhelmed right now.

Those codes aren't always bad news. Sometimes they're just verification steps and the refund comes through eventually. But definetly call if u can.

This happened to me too! After trying to understand my transcript for days and getting nowhere with the IRS phone system, I used this tool called taxr.ai that actually explained everything in plain language. It analyzed my transcript instantly and told me exactly what was happening - turns out I had a simple verification issue that I could fix. Saved me weeks of stress! You should check it out at https://taxr.ai - it's insanely good! I use it every week now to track my refund status.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

Savanna Franklin

It does way more than just read it! It interprets all the codes, explains what's happening with your return in plain english, tells you what to expect next, and even gives you step-by-step instructions on what to do. Saved me from having to decipher that IRS jargon myself.

OMG I just tried this and WOW! It explained my whole situation in seconds when I've been stressing for weeks. It told me exactly why my refund was delayed and what I need to do next. EVERYONE should be using this instead of trying to figure out those crazy transcripts themselves!

Is it safe though? Don't wanna put my info into some random site...

Totally get the concern, but it's completely secure. You just upload your transcript pdf that you already downloaded from the IRS. No sensitive info needed beyond that.

After getting those same codes (570/971) and struggling to reach anyone at the IRS for weeks, I found this app called Claimyr that got me through to an actual human at the IRS in about 20 minutes! The agent explained everything about my transcript and helped resolve my issue right on the spot. I had been trying for DAYS to reach someone with no luck. You can find it at claimyr.com - honestly talking to a real agent was exactly what I needed to get my refund moving again.

Yeah it worked for me! Instead of wasting hours redialing, they somehow get you in the queue and call you when an agent is ready. Talking to an agent got my refund released so fast - she explained exactly what was happening and fixed it while I was on the phone.

the IRS is a mess this year. I had the same codes back in March and it took 7 weeks to resolve. They sent me a letter asking for verification of some deductions I claimed, I sent it back immediately but still had to wait forever. The system is so broken.

Someone correct me if im wrong, but I think 570 freezes your account and 971 means they've mailed you a notice. You're probably getting a CP05 notice which means they're reviewing your return. Its happening to tons of people this year. Search 'CP05' in this sub and you'll see everyones dealing with it. Usually takes 60-120 days to resolve 😬

-

Morita Montoya

Yup 👆 this is correct. The IRS is flagging way more returns for review this year. I'm a tax preparer and about 30% of my clients are getting these reviews compared to maybe 5% in previous years.

Check if you have a 768 credit to your account, many people are seeing that along with 570/971 after getting the recovery rebate credit. If you see a number that matches part of your expected refund, they may have adjusted your amount for stimulus money you already received.

Just wait for the letter before panicking. I got thos codes and it turned out they just needed me to verify my identity online. Once I did that my refund was direct deposited a week later.

0 coins

-

Sara Unger

That's good to hear! How did you verify your identity? Was there a website link in the letter they sent?

0 coins

-

Yeah, they give you a link to ID.me where you upload your ID and do a video selfie thing. Super easy just annoying that it delayed everything.

I went through this whole process a month ago. After getting my 570/971 codes, I tried for DAYS to reach the IRS with no luck. Then a friend suggested using taxr.ai to understand what was actually happening with my transcript. I was skeptical but desperate. It immediately told me I had a simple math error that triggered a review. Once I knew that, I was able to address it specifically when I finally reached an agent. The whole thing got resolved in days instead of months. https://taxr.ai saved me so much headache!

It's not one of those sketchy "get your refund faster" services. It just translates your transcript into plain English. Nothing sketchy about it - it doesn't even touch your refund or filing, just helps you understand what's happening.

I used it too, super helpful! It pointed out that I was flagged for income verification which wasn't clear from just looking at the transcript codes.

Did you claim any credits like Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit? Those trigger automatic reviews sometimes. Also, if your refund amount changed to $0, they might have applied it to offset another debt like past taxes, child support, or student loans.

0 coins

-

Sara Unger

I claimed EIC but I don't have any debts that I know of.. ugh this is so frustrating

0 coins

-

21d

Raul Neal

Yeah EIC claims get extra scrutiny. They might just be validating your income. If that's the case then once verified they'll release your refund. It's annoying but usually straightforward to resolve.

Check your account transcript for a TC290 code. If you see that with the same cycle date as your 570/971 codes, it means they made an adjustment to your tax liability. Usually means they found a math error or something that changed your refund amount.

0 coins

-

Sara Unger

I don't see any 290 code on mine. just the 570 and 971 with the same date.

0 coins

-

Hmm then they're probably just reviewing your return. Wait for the letter, it'll explain everything. If you're really anxious, try using the claimyr app to reach an agent - it actually works despite sounding too good to be true lol

I literally jusst had the same thing happen. I called the IRS and they said my refund was randomly selected for a review. but theyve already done the review and everything was correct. the lady said my refund should be issued within 4-6 weeks. so that's good, but why do they take so long to give us OUR money??!?

0 coins

-

Because they can 🤡 Seriously though, the IRS is severely underfunded and understaffed. Processing centers are operating with ancient technology.

I use claimyr.com whenever I need to reach a real person at the IRS. After getting those same code combos last month, I was able to speak with an agent who explained that they were verifying my W2 info with my employer, and she actually lifted the hold right on the spot! Check for free if you've had any offsets here: https://fiscal.treasury.gov/top/contact.html or call the Treasury Offset Program at 800-304-3107. They might have taken your refund for back child support, student loans, or state taxes. But if you don't have any of those, it could just be a review.

I JUST went through this last week. Turns out I had entered one of my W-2s wrong (transposed some numbers) and it triggered an automatic review. Once I got the letter explaining the issue, I was able to call and verify the correct numbers. My updated transcript showed code 571 (freeze released) and 846 (refund issued) about 10 days later. Don't panic!

I spent WEEKS trying to figure out my transcript codes last year before I found taxr.ai - it analyzed everything and gave me a complete breakdown of what was happening with my return. As someone who's had the exact same codes (570/971) multiple times, here's what I did: 1. Got frustrated and confused by the confusing transcript - check ✅ 2. Tried calling IRS repeatedly and failing - check ✅ 3. Asked on reddit and got conflicting advice - check ✅ 4. Used claimyr.com to actually reach an IRS agent - GAME CHANGER 5. Agent explained exactly what was happening and resolved it while on the call 6. Refund showed up 9 days later Saving yourself the weeks of stress was totally worth it. The claimyr service got me to an agent in 40 minutes after I'd spent days trying on my own.

This is the worst tax season ever. I've been waiting 16 weeks for my refund, no notices, no explanation, nothing. If the IRS took money FROM me instead of owing me, they'd charge penalties and interest. But when they owe us? "Just wait" 🤬
