Watch out for 2024 delays. They're worse than last year. I filed January 15. Accepted same day. Cycle 0605 too. Still waiting. Called IRS twice. No help. They just say "still processing." My friend filed February 1. Already got refund. Makes no sense. System seems random. Don't count on refund timing for important expenses. IRS doesn't follow their own timelines.
One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet - have you checked if you have any offsets that could be affecting your refund? Sometimes there are no issues on the transcript but there's an offset for past-due federal debts, state taxes, child support, etc. that can delay processing. You can call the TOP (Treasury Offset Program) at 800-304-3107 to check if you have any offsets. Also, did you claim any recovery rebate credits or anything unusual that might trigger additional review?
My verification journey was like waiting for a cake to bake without being able to open the oven door. Verified on Feb 1st, and exactly 32 days later my transcript updated. The refund showed up 6 days after that. The IRS is basically running on computer systems from when disco was popular, so everything takes longer than it should. The 9-week estimate is like when your contractor says the kitchen remodel will take 2 weeks - they're padding the timeline.
Did you get any confirmation number or documentation when you verified in person? Have you tried calling the Identity Verification line directly instead of the main IRS number?
I was in the same boat last week and got tired of checking WMR every 2 hours lol. Ended up using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an IRS agent after trying the regular number for days. Agent confirmed my return was approved and gave me my DDD even before WMR updated. Totally worth it to stop the anxiety of waiting and checking constantly.
Omg thank you! I've been trying to call them for the past 3 days and keep getting the "high call volume" message. Might try this if I don't see an update by Friday.
No problem! Yeah the regular line is basically impossible right now. With Claimyr I was talking to an actual IRS person in like 15 minutes. Just have your info ready - they'll ask for your SSN, filing status, and the amount on line 28 of your 1040 to verify your identity.
Just a heads up - I bank with First Horizon too and they sometimes hold deposits for 24 hours even after the IRS releases funds. So even when you get your deposit date, it might be a day later than what WMR shows.
Be extremely cautious with tax preparers who calculate fees based on refund percentage. Last year, my sister paid $450 for a basic return with one W-2 and standard deduction because the preparer charged 10% of her refund. She didn't realize until after filing that she could have done it herself for free with IRS Free File. Additionally, that preparer incorrectly claimed education credits she wasn't eligible for, which resulted in an adjustment letter six months later requiring repayment with interest. Have you verified whether your current preparer has proper credentials? Many display PTIN numbers but lack actual certification.
Compared to using paid services like TurboTax or H&R Block, I've found that the IRS Free File program works just as well for most basic tax situations. Last year I paid $89 for TurboTax Deluxe, but this year I qualified for Free File (income under $73,000) and the experience was nearly identical but completely free. The interface isn't as polished as the paid options, but it asks all the same questions and handles all standard forms. I'm putting that saved money toward my student loan payment this month instead of padding some tax company's profits.

This appears to be related to the IRS's new Integrated Financial System (IFS) implementation. The Treasury Financial Management Service has modified their Automated Clearing House (ACH) processing protocols for tax refunds. Are you using a tax preparer with fees deducted from your refund? That adds SBTPG as an intermediary processor, which introduces additional variables to the deposit timeline.

I've been using Chime for my tax refunds for the past 4 years, and this year was definitely different. Last year my DDD was 2/22 but I got my deposit on 2/19. This year my DDD was 2/21 and that's exactly when it hit, not a day sooner. I called Chime support and they told me it's not on their end - they release funds as soon as they receive them. Seems like the IRS changed something in their process this year. Just glad it actually came on the date promised!
