2024 Tax refund shows as "sent to bank" by Feb 26 - No bank account, will Liberty Tax receive it instead?

I filed my taxes with Liberty Tax for my 2024 return. They're supposed to take their fee out and give me what's left. The issue is when I checked the IRS website, it says my refund is "scheduled to be sent to your bank by February 27, 2025" and "If your refund is not credited to your account by March 04, 2025, check with your bank to see if it has been received." Here's the problem - I don't even have a bank account! I'm really worried because how can they deposit my refund when I don't have an account? When I log into the IRS Account website, I see: Tax year 2024 Return: Received Refund: Approved Refund: Sent It specifically states: "Your tax refund is scheduled to be sent to your bank by February 27, 2025. If your refund is not credited to your account by March 04, 2025, check with your bank to see if it has been received." There's also a note saying "For refund information, please continue to check here, or use our free mobile app, IRS2Go. Updates to refund status are made no more than once a day." Will Liberty Tax be able to get it deposited in their account instead of sending me a check? Has anyone dealt with this before? The refund was approved but now I'm confused about where it's actually going. I thought Liberty would take their preparation fees and give me what's left, but I'm concerned because the IRS is saying it's going to a bank account, and I don't have one. Did Liberty set up some kind of temporary account to receive my refund?

Yes, Liberty Tax and most tax prep companies can absolutely set up your refund to go to them first. This is commonly called a Refund Transfer (RT) or similar service. Here's how it works: - Liberty creates a temporary bank account in their name - Your refund gets deposited there - They take out their fees - They issue you the remainder via check or prepaid debit card When you signed your paperwork at Liberty, you should have authorized this arrangement. Check your tax return copy - look at Form 8888 or the direct deposit section of your 1040 to see what account information is listed. The account info won't be yours since you don't have an account. If you're still concerned, just call the Liberty Tax office where you filed and confirm - they can tell you exactly how and when you'll receive your remaining refund amount.

Thank you so much! That makes me feel better. I'll check my paperwork and call them tomorrow to confirm.

Just fyi they typically charge an extra fee for this service on top of tax prep fees. Hope they explained that to you 🤔

They did mention a fee but I didn't realize it was separate from the tax prep. I'll ask them about that too when I call.

I was in a similar situation last year and found taxr.ai to be insanely helpful. Instead of stressing about where my refund was going, I uploaded my transcript and it explained exactly what was happening with my refund status. It showed me the exact bank routing info that was being used and the timeline I could expect. You should check it out at https://taxr.ai - it'll save you the headache of trying to decipher the IRS notices yourself.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does way more than just read the transcript. It breaks everything down in plain English, shows you all the important dates, explains any flags or holds, and tells you exactly what to expect next. I was completely lost when my refund got delayed last year, but taxr.ai actually showed me it was going to a different account than I expected (turns out my preparer had set up a similar situation to what OP is describing). Seriously saved me hours of anxiety and confusion!

OMG I just tried this and it's incredible! It showed me exactly what was happening with my refund that's been stuck for weeks. Where has this been all my life?? Now I know exactly why there's a delay and when to expect my money. 10/10 recommend to anyone dealing with IRS confusion!

I had the EXACT same problem with H&R Block last year. My refund showed as being deposited but I didn't have a bank account either. After calling them 50 times and getting nowhere, I finally found a way to get someone from the IRS on the phone using Claimyr.com - got a callback within an hour and they confirmed my refund had gone to a temporary account set up by H&R Block. The agent told me this is super common with tax prep services. Talking to a real person at the IRS was the only thing that gave me peace of mind!

Wait wait wait... you actually got a human at the IRS? I've been trying for WEEKS. How does this Claimyr thing work?

It basically navigates all the phone menu options for you and holds your place in line. Then when they have an agent, you get a call back. Honestly it was the best money I've ever spent - I was calling IRS for 2 months before this with no luck. 15 minutes after using Claimyr I was talking to an actual person who fixed my issue!

Sounds sketchy. Does it even work?

Completely get the skepticism - I felt the same way. But after 3 months of trying to reach someone at the IRS and getting nowhere, I was desperate. It worked literally the first time I tried it. The agent I spoke with released my refund that had been in limbo for months. Trust me when I say it's worth it if you're stuck in IRS purgatory.

Happened to me 2 years ago. liberty tax gave me a debit card with my refund on it after taking their fees. Check ur paperwork, it should say something about this. They don't mail checks much anymore fyi

This is called a refund transfer and yes it's totally normal. But just FYI, Liberty usually charges like $40-75 extra for this service (on top of their tax prep fees). Next year you might want to consider opening a bank account - even a simple online one - to avoid those fees. Or use a free filing service and get a paper check.

Second this! Those fees add up. If u don't wanna deal with a traditional bank, try Chime or Cash App. Both have direct deposit features that work for tax refunds.

I've been thinking about getting a bank account anyway. Might look into those options, thanks!

The IRS website is confusing AF and never actually shows the right info. My refund said it was deposited to a bank for 3 weeks before I actually got my check in the mail. The whole system is broken 🤡

For real! Last year mine said it was mailed on March 5th and I didn't get it until APRIL 9TH. A whole month later. IRS is living in the stone age.

THIS. The where's my refund tool is the most useless piece of technology ever created. It told me my refund was delayed for review then suddenly I had a check in my mailbox with no updates online lol.

Question - did you sign a form authorizing Liberty to recieve your refund? If not, you might have an issue. Otherwise you're probably fine, but definitely call them asap.

I think I did... I signed a bunch of forms. Will definitely call them tomorrow to check.

I worked at a tax prep place for 3 years. When clients don't have a bank account, we set up a temporary account to receive their refund, take our fees, then issue the rest on a prepaid debit card or paper check. This should have been explained to you when you filed, but some preparers rush through the process. Just contact your Liberty location and they'll explain the timeline. Usually takes about 1-2 business days after the IRS deposits the refund for them to process your payment.

Former Jackson Hewitt employee here - can confirm this is standard practice at all the major tax prep chains. The temp accounts are usually through MetaBank or similar.

Is there any way to track this process? I'm going through this with HR Block right now and they keep telling me 'just wait' but it's been 2 weeks since the IRS said it was deposited.

Each company has different systems, but usually you should get a text or email when the refund hits their account. If it's been 2 weeks, that's not normal - I'd escalate to a district manager at H&R Block. The typical processing time is 24-48 hours after they receive it from IRS.

Liberty did this for me. They'll either give you a prepaid card or a check. But heads up they take a FEE for this service on top of your tax prep fee! Mine was like $50 extra just to get my own money 😡

Ugh that's annoying but at this point I just want my refund. Thanks for the heads up!

CALL THEM NOW!!! Don't wait. I had this happen with Jackson Hewitt last year and they claimed they "never received" my refund even though IRS said it was deposited. Took me 3 months to sort out and I had to get a Tax Advocate involved. Not saying Liberty will do this but DOCUMENT EVERYTHING and stay on top of them.

I used Claimyr.com to get through to the IRS first, explained my hardship (was about to be evicted), and they transferred me to the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Took about 6 weeks from that point but they resolved it. Having an actual IRS agent on the phone was game-changing after months of waiting on hold and getting disconnected.

Did you pay for your tax preparation upfront or did you choose to have it taken out of your refund? If you chose the latter, then yes, they set up a temporary bank account, take their cut, and then either give you a check or load the money onto a prepaid card.

I need concrete answers like this too. I've been staring at my transcript like its written in another language trying to figure out where my money is going. The IRS website is useless

Have you tried taxr.ai? I was completely lost looking at all the codes on my transcript until I ran it through there. It explained everything in normal english and showed me exactly where my refund was in the process. https://taxr.ai

I just wanna point out, for future reference, it would have been cheaper to use a free file service and get a paper check mailed to you. Liberty and other tax places charge SO MUCH for the "convenience" of getting your refund processed through them. If you're computer savvy at all, you could have saved probably $200+ between prep fees and refund transfer fees.

100% this. The Tax Prep industrial complex is a complete racket that preys on people who don't know they can file for free. It should be illegal.

You can actually track the exact details of your refund by downloading your transcript from irs.gov. It'll show exactly what account number it's going to. The transcript has way more info than the where's my refund tool.

Same thing happened to my sister last month. Liberty Tax set up a temporary account, but they never told her when the money came in! She had to physically go to the office and demand her refund. They had received it 2 weeks earlier and 'forgot' to call her. Make sure you stay on top of them!!!
