Where to apply for unemployment in California - EDD filing options explained

So I just got laid off last Friday and I have no idea where to apply for unemployment. My manager mentioned something about EDD but I didn't even know what that stood for until I googled it. I've been reading different things online and some say to go in person, some say to call, some say to do it online and I'm honestly overwhelmed. I worked at a logistics company for about 4 years, full-time, and this was a straight up layoff - no issues with my performance or anything. I just want to make sure I file the right way and don't mess anything up. Can someone tell me where exactly to apply for unemployment in California and what I should expect after I submit my application?

Welcome to the club nobody wants to join. So the main place to apply for California EDD unemployment is online through UI Online at unemployment.edd.ca.gov - that's the fastest and most reliable method. You create an account, fill out the application, and submit it all in one sitting. It usually takes 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready. You'll need your last employer's info (address, phone, dates of employment), your social security number, and your banking info if you want direct deposit. After you submit, EDD typically mails you a confirmation and then you wait for their determination. With a clean layoff like yours you shouldn't have any major issues but just be prepared for the adjudication period which can take a few weeks.

Thank you! So I don't need to go anywhere in person at all? I can do the whole thing from my laptop?

0 coins

Yep 100% online for the initial application. EDD closed most of their in-person offices for applications years ago. The online system is your main hub for everything - filing your initial claim, certifying weekly, checking status, all of it.

0 coins

Just want to add - make sure you file as soon as possible because your claim start date is tied to when you apply. Every day you wait is potentially benefits you can't get back retroactively.

0 coins

The UI Online portal is definitely the way to go. Go to unemployment.edd.ca.gov and click 'File a UI Claim'. A couple things to watch out for: 1) File within the week you become unemployed if possible, 2) Have your last 18 months of employment history ready not just your most recent job, 3) Choose direct deposit during the application - it's faster than the EDD debit card. After you submit your initial application you'll get a confirmation number - SAVE IT. Then within about 10 days you should receive a 'Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award' letter if approved, or a notice requesting more info if there are any questions about your eligibility.

Do I need my W2s or pay stubs to apply? I'm not sure where those are right now

0 coins

You don't need them to apply - EDD pulls your wage records directly from your employer's tax filings. But keep them accessible in case there's any discrepancy later. The main things you actually need in front of you are your SSN, employer contact info, and your start/end dates of employment.

0 coins

This is good info. I'd also add that the website can be kinda slow on Mondays so maybe try Tuesday or Wednesday if you want a smoother experience filing.

0 coins

Seconding the direct deposit recommendation. I waited weeks for my EDD debit card to arrive and by the time it did I was really struggling financially. Direct deposit hit my account way faster once my claim was processed.

0 coins

One thing nobody mentions - if you have ANY trouble with your online application or if the portal gives you errors, you can also apply by phone at 1-800-300-5616. BUT fair warning the hold times are absolutely brutal. I spent 3 hours on hold last year just trying to ask a simple question about my claim status. If you end up needing to call EDD for anything beyond just filing - like if your claim gets stuck or goes into adjudication - look into a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was skeptical at first but it basically holds your place in line and calls you back when an EDD agent is available. Saved me from the whole redial nightmare. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see how it works before trying it.

0 coins

Oh wow I didn't even think about phone problems. Good to know about that backup option. The Claimyr thing sounds interesting too in case I hit any snags.

0 coins

Claimyr was a lifesaver for me when my claim went into adjudication for 6 weeks. Couldn't get through on the phone to save my life and Claimyr connected me to an actual agent in like an hour. Highly recommend especially if anything complicated comes up with your claim.

0 coins

wait you can apply by phone too?? I didn't know that. I thought it was all online now

0 coins

WHERE do you apply - short answer is unemployment.edd.ca.gov for online. That's it. Everything else is just backup options. Online is faster, creates a paper trail automatically, and you can do it at 2am in your pajamas which is honestly the best part when you're stressed about losing your job lol

0 coins

lol okay this made me feel a little better about the whole thing

0 coins

It's genuinely not as scary as it seems. First time I filed I was terrified I'd mess something up but the online system walks you through every step. Just read each question carefully especially the ones about why you're no longer working.

0 coins

I want to address something because I see people get confused about this all the time - there's only ONE official place to apply for California unemployment and that's through the EDD (Employment Development Department). Any other website that looks like it's an EDD application is probably a scam or a third party service that charges you fees. The official website URL is unemployment.edd.ca.gov - look for the .ca.gov ending which confirms it's a legitimate California government site. Do not pay anyone to file your unemployment claim. It is completely free to apply.

0 coins

Oh that's really important to know thank you! I did see some websites that looked official but now I'll make sure to double check the URL.

0 coins

This is such an important point. There are so many sketchy sites that try to charge for 'filing assistance' for something that's totally free. Always verify you're on a .ca.gov domain.

0 coins

Bookmarking this comment to share with people. The scam sites are getting more sophisticated and it's easy to accidentally end up on the wrong page especially when googling.

also make sure u apply the same week u got laid off if u can!! i didnt know this and i applied like 2 weeks after and lost out on 2 weeks of benefits. edd doesnt backdate unless you have a really good reason

0 coins

Oh no that's exactly the kind of mistake I want to avoid. Filing today then!

0 coins

good!! also the week runs sunday to saturday for EDD purposes just so you know

Since you mentioned you worked at a logistics company for 4 years with no performance issues - your situation sounds pretty straightforward for California EDD. Layoffs with no misconduct attached typically don't require extended adjudication. After you apply you'll enter a waiting week (California EDD has a one week unpaid waiting period built in - first week you certify you don't get paid for it) and then your benefits should start flowing after that. Just make sure when you certify weekly afterward that you answer the job search questions correctly. California currently requires you to contact 3 employers per week as part of your work search requirements while collecting UI benefits.

0 coins

Wait I have to contact 3 employers per week? Like actively be job searching while collecting benefits?

0 coins

Yes - it's called the work search requirement. You need to document your job search activities (applications submitted, contacts made, etc.) and you may need to report them to EDD. Some people also get referred to CalJOBS which is the state's job search platform. It sounds like a lot but as long as you're genuinely looking for work it becomes routine pretty quickly.

0 coins

The 3 contacts per week is manageable. I just kept a simple spreadsheet logging each application with date, company, position, and method of contact. Saved me a lot of stress when EDD asked for my work search records.

0 coins

omg I went through this exact same situation like 8 months ago!! Also got laid off from a warehouse/logistics type job out of nowhere. Few things I wish someone had told me: 1) the system logs you out after like 20 min of inactivity so have everything ready before you start 2) the 'reason for separation' section is really important - just say 'lack of work/layoff' and keep it simple 3) double and triple check your banking info for direct deposit bc if it's wrong it creates a huge headache to fix

0 coins

The timeout thing is SO helpful to know - I would have been so frustrated if I got kicked out mid-application. Thank you for all of this!

0 coins

Yeah I learned the hard way lol. Also take screenshots of your confirmation page at the end just in case

0 coins

The reason for separation section is genuinely the most important part. If you say anything that raises a flag - even accidentally - it can trigger a phone interview with EDD and delay your claim significantly. 'Lack of work' is the cleanest answer for a standard layoff.

0 coins

I'm kind of in the same boat as OP right now actually - just laid off yesterday from a marketing firm. Can I ask - after you apply online, how do you know if you're approved? Do they email you or is it all through the mail?

0 coins

EDD primarily communicates through physical mail unfortunately. You'll get a letter called the 'Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award' that tells you your weekly benefit amount and eligibility dates. You can also check your UI Online account for status updates but official determinations come by mail. Make sure your address on file is correct!

0 coins

Ugh okay so I need to watch my mailbox. Thanks for answering, this whole process is so confusing for first-timers

0 coins

Some notices do also show up in your UI Online inbox - it's worth checking both your physical mailbox AND your online account regularly during the first few weeks. EDD sends a lot of documents and missing one can cause problems.

0 coins

Something worth knowing: after you file your initial claim, you'll need to certify for benefits every two weeks (biweekly) through UI Online or by phone using the automated EDD Tele-Cert system. If you miss a certification period you could have your benefits delayed or even denied for that period. Set a calendar reminder for your certification dates - EDD will tell you what your specific dates are after you're approved.

0 coins

Wait is it every week or every two weeks? Someone above said weekly...

0 coins

Good catch - so technically EDD certifications cover weekly periods but you submit them in batches. You certify for two weeks at a time, but you're still certifying for each individual week within that period. The UI Online system will prompt you when it's time to certify.

0 coins

To clarify: California EDD has you certify every two weeks, but you answer questions about EACH of the two weeks separately within that same certification. So you answer week 1 questions and week 2 questions in the same sitting. You only have a window of a few days to certify before that period closes.

Can I just say - I've been collecting unemployment twice now (different layoffs, tech industry is brutal lately) and the WHERE to apply part is easy: unemployment.edd.ca.gov. The hard part is everything that happens AFTER. My second claim hit adjudication and I was going crazy trying to reach someone at EDD. I must have called 50 times over two weeks. Finally a coworker told me about Claimyr and I felt like an idiot for not knowing about it sooner. You go to claimyr.com, it gets you through to an actual EDD rep without the hold time torture. There's a walkthrough video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that explains the whole thing. Once I got through to an agent my adjudication was cleared within a couple days.

0 coins

I really hope my claim doesn't go into adjudication but it's good to know there's a way to actually reach someone if things get complicated. Thanks for sharing that!

0 coins

Tech industry layoffs are rough right now. I'm in a similar boat. How long did your adjudication end up taking once you used Claimyr to reach someone?

0 coins

Once I actually spoke to an agent it moved quickly - within 3 business days my status updated and my back payments came through. The issue was just getting a human on the phone. EDD agents can actually do a lot to help resolve things once you reach them, the barrier is just the phone system itself.

For anyone reading this thread who is undocumented or has a complicated immigration status - EDD unemployment benefits DO require work authorization. You need to be legally authorized to work in the US to qualify. Just wanted to make sure that's clear since a lot of people aren't sure about this.

0 coins

Correct and important clarification. California EDD verifies work authorization as part of the eligibility process. ID.me verification is also now part of the claim setup process which handles identity verification digitally.

0 coins

The ID.me part tripped up a lot of people I know. If you have trouble with ID.me verification there's an in-person option too where you can go to an EDD office to verify identity, though you'd need to call ahead to schedule.

0 coins

One more thing I haven't seen mentioned - if you're filing for the first time EVER California EDD might ask you to do an in-person appointment or video call as part of identity verification. Don't panic if you get that notice. It's just their fraud prevention process and as long as you are who you say you are it's a non-issue. Bring your ID and any employment docs they request.

0 coins

Good to know - I'm definitely a first time filer so I'll keep this in mind

0 coins

Yeah first timers sometimes get extra scrutiny just as a system thing. The ID.me online verification usually handles it but occasionally they want more confirmation. Just respond to any requests quickly - delays on your end = delays in your benefits.

0 coins

This is true. I got flagged for identity verification on my first claim and it added about 10 days to my processing time. But once I completed it everything processed normally.

0 coins

Real talk about timing: the earlier in the week you file, the better. California EDD benefit weeks run Sunday through Saturday. If you file and establish your claim on a Sunday you capture that full week. If you wait until Thursday you've already lost most of that week's potential benefit period. File NOW while you're reading this thread if you haven't yet.

0 coins

Filing RIGHT NOW. Thank you everyone in this thread seriously. Going to go do it before I lose another day.

0 coins

Good luck! Come back and update us. And if you run into any weird error messages or the portal gives you trouble, that phone number I mentioned earlier (or Claimyr if you can't get through) is your backup.

0 coins

rooting for you!! the first time is stressful but once you're in the system it gets easier

0 coins

Just to give you a complete picture of what happens after you apply so you're not caught off guard: 1) Submit application → get confirmation number 2) EDD processes your claim (usually 3-5 weeks for first payment) 3) You receive Award Notice by mail listing your weekly benefit amount 4) You start certifying every two weeks on your designated schedule 5) Payment hits your bank account or EDD prepaid debit card 2-3 days after each certification 6) You continue job searching and documenting your efforts 7) If anything flags for adjudication you may get a questionnaire or phone interview. The whole thing is a process but it's manageable once you know the steps.

0 coins

This is the timeline breakdown I needed. Bookmarking this whole thread honestly.

0 coins

Thank you for this - I'm going to screenshot this for myself too

0 coins

One addition to this excellent breakdown - after your initial Benefit Year runs out (it's 12 months) you'd need to refile if you're still unemployed. Most people are back to work before that but good to know the system resets annually.

0 coins

i applied last month and honestly it was easier than i expected?? like the online form basically guides you through everything. took me maybe 40 minutes. the waiting after is the annoying part not the applying part lol

0 coins

That's reassuring! I've been psyching myself out about the application itself but it sounds like the form itself is pretty guided.

0 coins

yeah like it literally asks you yes/no questions for most of it. just be honest and read carefully and you'll be fine

0 coins

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR OP: Go to unemployment.edd.ca.gov (not edd.ca.gov, not ca.gov, specifically unemployment.edd.ca.gov) → Click 'File a UI Claim' → Create your account or log in → Complete the application → Submit. That's the whole process in one sentence. Everything else in this thread is helpful context but that's the actual answer to 'where do I apply for unemployment in California.

0 coins

Lol I appreciate this concise summary. I've already started the application and it's going well! Will report back.

0 coins

Nice!! The nervousness before filing is way worse than the actual filing. You've got this.

0 coins

Perfect summary. And just to reinforce - bookmark that URL once you're in the system. You'll be returning to it every two weeks to certify so having it saved saves you the google search each time.

0 coins

Also wanted to mention - if you're leaving a job voluntarily (not a layoff like OP) the process for WHERE to apply is the same but your eligibility might be different. Voluntary quits can sometimes qualify if there was 'good cause' like unsafe conditions, a significant pay cut, or documented harassment. Just want to make sure anyone else reading this thread who left voluntarily doesn't assume they can't apply - it's worth trying and letting EDD make the determination.

0 coins

This is a good clarification. A lot of people who quit voluntarily assume they're automatically disqualified and never even apply. Always worth filing and letting the system determine eligibility.

0 coins

Agreed. Even if your situation is complicated - quit, fired for cause, reduced hours, contract ended - apply and let EDD adjudicate. The worst they can say is no, and you can appeal that decision too.

0 coins

been on unemployment twice and here's my hot take - the APPLYING part is the easy part that takes an hour. the CALLING part if anything goes wrong is where people lose their minds. if you ever need to reach an actual EDD rep, Claimyr (claimyr.com) is genuinely the move. i know it sounds like an ad but I've recommended it to like 6 people and all of them got through to agents when they couldn't on their own. regular EDD phone lines are a disaster. the service just navigates the hold queue for you and calls you when an agent picks up.

0 coins

I've seen Claimyr mentioned a few times in this thread now - definitely going to keep that in my back pocket if I run into any issues with my claim.

0 coins

yeah i had to use it when my payments stopped randomly after 3 weeks. got an agent on the line and found out there was a simple address verification thing holding everything up. would have taken me forever to figure that out through the portal alone.

0 coins

wish i had known about this during my first claim. i literally sat on hold for 2.5 hours and then got disconnected. it was one of the most demoralizing experiences of my life lol
