How do I file for unemployment in California? EDD claim process explained
Okay so I just got laid off last Friday and I have absolutely no idea how to file for unemployment. My manager said I was being let go due to budget cuts and gave me my last paycheck on the spot. I've never had to deal with this before and I'm honestly pretty overwhelmed. I went to the California EDD website and there's just so much information I don't even know where to start. Do I file online? Do I have to call someone? How long does it take to actually get money? I have bills due in like 3 weeks and I'm really stressed. Any help would be appreciated, even just pointing me in the right direction.

First thing - take a breath. You can absolutely do this. Here's the basic rundown for filing a California EDD unemployment claim: 1. Go to UI Online at https://myedd.edd.ca.gov/ and create an account if you don't have one already 2. Click 'File a UI Claim' and fill out the initial application 3. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the past 18 months, and your employer's info (name, address, phone) 4. After submitting, California EDD will mail you a notice confirming your claim and telling you your benefit year begin date The whole online application usually takes about 30-45 minutes if you have everything ready. After you file, you'll need to submit weekly certifications every week to actually receive payments. Don't wait to file - your benefit year begins the week you submit that first application, so every day counts.

AuthorThank you so much! Do I need to have my last pay stub or W2 handy when I fill out the application?

Having your last pay stub is helpful but not strictly required. California EDD will verify your wages directly with your employer. Just have your employer's full legal name and address ready - that's the part people get tripped up on most.

yeah also make sure you know your start and end dates of employment, they ask for that for every job you had in the last 18 months which caught me off guard

One thing I'd add - file as SOON as possible. I made the mistake of waiting a week thinking I should 'see if I could find a job first' and that delayed my entire claim. California EDD won't backdate claims so you lose any benefits for weeks you didn't file. The date you submit your initial claim is what starts your benefit year.

AuthorOh wow I did not know that. I was literally thinking the same thing, like maybe I should just look for work first. Filing today then.

Just went through this whole process about 6 weeks ago. A few things nobody tells you upfront: - After you file online, expect a 3-5 week wait before you see any money, sometimes longer if your claim goes into adjudication - You'll need to set up a UI Online account AND register on CalJOBS (the state job search site) within 21 days of filing - Start keeping a job search log immediately - you need to record at least one employer contact per week for most claimants - Your debit card (Bank of America EDD card) gets mailed separately and can take 7-10 days to arrive even after approval Also - if you ever need to actually talk to a California EDD agent because something goes wrong with your claim, calling is an absolute nightmare. I spent days trying to get through. Someone on another thread recommended a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that basically holds your place in the California EDD phone queue and calls you back when an agent is available. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see how it works. Saved me a ton of frustration when my claim had an issue.

AuthorHow did you know if your claim went into adjudication? Does it say that on the website?

Zara Ahmed
Yeah it shows up in your UI Online account under claim status. It'll say something like 'pending' or 'adjudication in progress.' If you see that, it means California EDD is investigating something about your eligibility - could be your employer contested the claim, or there's a question about your separation reason. It doesn't mean you're denied, just means it needs human review.

The Claimyr thing actually works, I used it when my payment was stuck for 3 weeks with no explanation. Got through to an agent same day instead of spending hours redialing.

wait do you have to be laid off or can you quit and still get unemployment?? asking for myself lol
0 coins
Chloe Martin
Generally you have to be laid off or let go through no fault of your own to qualify. If you quit voluntarily you typically don't qualify UNLESS you quit for what California EDD calls 'good cause' - things like unsafe working conditions, significant reduction in pay or hours, relocating for a spouse's job, etc. It's a higher bar to clear but not impossible.

Luca Esposito
ugh okay yeah I quit because my boss was making my life hell but idk if that counts as good cause

Anastasia Sokolov
Document everything about why you left. Hostile work environment can potentially qualify as good cause but California EDD will investigate it. You'd need to show you tried to resolve it before quitting.

I filed for unemployment for the first time last year and honestly the CalJOBS registration requirement confused me way more than the actual claim filing. Nobody explains that you have to do that separately and it's on a completely different website. Don't skip it though because California EDD can pause your payments if you're not registered.

AuthorOh I had no idea about CalJOBS at all. Is there a deadline to register on there?

Nia Thompson
21 days from your claim filing date I believe. You'll get instructions in your confirmation paperwork but easy to miss if you're not paying attention.

Diego Rojas
Yep 21 days. Go to caljobs.ca.gov and create an account and upload your resume. Takes maybe 20 minutes.

THE WEEKLY CERTIFICATIONS ARE SO IMPORTANT. I cannot stress this enough. I missed one week early on because I thought I only had to do it when I wanted to get paid and California EDD just closed my whole claim. Had to refile and restart the whole process. You have to certify EVERY SINGLE WEEK even if you're still looking for work, even if your claim is in adjudication, even if you haven't received a payment yet. SET A CALENDAR REMINDER.
0 coins
AstroAce
AuthorOkay this is genuinely terrifying, thank you for the warning. What day of the week do you certify?
0 coins
Mateo Rodriguez
It depends on your assigned certification schedule - California EDD gives you a specific day range, usually Sunday through Saturday or a variation. It says in your confirmation letter. I certify on Sunday mornings just to stay consistent.

Sean O'Donnell
yeah the certifications tripped me up too. it feels counterintuitive that you have to keep doing something every week when nothing is happening yet but you absolutely do
0 coins
Zara Ahmed
Also want to flag - when you certify each week, be really careful how you answer the work and earnings questions. If you did any work for pay that week, even a small gig or a one-day temp job, you have to report those earnings. California EDD calculates a partial benefit for weeks you earned something. Hiding it isn't worth it - they cross-check with employer payroll records and the consequences for underreporting are serious.

Luca Esposito
what if i did a small freelance thing and got like $80. do i really have to report that
0 coins
Zara Ahmed
Yes, report it. California EDD has a formula where you keep a portion of your benefit even when you earn money in a week. It's not like you lose everything, you just get a reduced payment. Unreported earnings are how overpayment situations start and those are a nightmare to deal with later.

StarStrider
Seriously report everything. I got hit with an overpayment notice for not reporting $200 in freelance work and had to pay back way more than I thought because of how the penalty calculations work.

idk if this helps but the California EDD website has a FAQ page and also there's a section called 'UI Online tutorial' that walks you through the claim filing steps with screenshots. helped me a lot when i was totally lost

AuthorI'll look for that, thank you!

One more practical thing - after you submit your initial claim, screenshot or print your confirmation page with the confirmation number. Also screenshot your claim status in UI Online regularly. If anything goes sideways with your claim you'll want that documentation. California EDD does occasionally lose records of submitted forms and having proof of submission is really helpful when you need to dispute something.
0 coins
AstroAce
AuthorSmart, I wouldn't have thought to do that. I screenshot everything now anyway after some bad experiences with other online forms.

Really good habit. Also save any letters or notices California EDD mails you - don't throw them away even if they seem like junk mail. They sometimes send important deadline information in plain envelopes.

genuinely how long did it take everyone to actually receive their first payment? I'm in week 2 of waiting and starting to panic
0 coins
Zara Ahmed
Mine took 4 weeks for the first payment, then they released two weeks at once. Pretty common for first payments to take 3-5 weeks. If it goes past 6 weeks with no update in your UI Online account, that's when you should try to contact California EDD directly.
0 coins
Ethan Wilson
6 weeks?? I do not have 6 weeks of runway. This is really stressful.
0 coins
Zara Ahmed
I hear you. If you hit the 4-week mark with no movement, try reaching California EDD by phone. Getting through is brutal though - the hold times are insane. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) when I was in that situation and it actually got me connected to an agent without spending my whole day redialing. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 to see how it works.

I'll look into that, thank you. My UI Online just says 'pending' and has said that for two weeks with no explanation.

Something I wish someone had told me - when California EDD says they'll 'mail' something, budget 7-10 business days. Everything moves slow with them. Your initial claim confirmation, your EDD debit card, any notices about adjudication - all arrive by mail and always seem to take longer than expected. Don't make financial decisions based on 'I should have my card by now.
0 coins
Nia Thompson
100% accurate. I thought my debit card was lost because it took so long. Turns out it was just slow mail plus the card activation process.

AuthorGood to know. I was already mentally counting on money faster than that.

Just want to add something about the job search requirement since nobody has fully addressed it yet. For most California EDD claimants you're required to make at least one 'employer contact' per week as part of your job search activities. This gets recorded in your weekly certification. California EDD can audit your job search log and if you can't demonstrate you were actively looking for work you can be disqualified retroactively. Keep a spreadsheet with employer name, date, position applied for, and method of contact.

Luca Esposito
wait they can take back money they already paid you?? how does that work
0 coins
StarStrider
Yes - that's called an overpayment and it's one of the more painful situations with California EDD. If they audit and determine you weren't meeting job search requirements for certain weeks, they can declare you were ineligible for those weeks and demand repayment. It's rare but it happens.

This is why documentation is everything with unemployment claims. Keep records of EVERYTHING.

does anyone know if you can file for california edd if your job was seasonal? like i work summers at a resort and every year they lay off most staff in the fall
0 coins
Chloe Martin
Yes, seasonal layoffs absolutely qualify for unemployment benefits as long as you meet the base period earnings requirements. California EDD treats it like any other layoff - you were separated from employment through no fault of your own. Just make sure your employer codes your separation as a layoff and not a voluntary quit.

Sean O'Donnell
awesome thanks. my employer has done this every year for like 6 years so i assumed i could but wanted to confirm

Anastasia Sokolov
Also look into whether you might qualify for 'standby status' - if your employer plans to recall you by a specific date, you may be able to be placed on standby which has different job search requirements than regular UI.

Okay I have a slightly different situation - I was technically laid off but my employer is saying I quit. Obviously I did NOT quit, I was called into a meeting and told my position was eliminated. What do I do?
0 coins
Chloe Martin
File your claim stating you were laid off - tell your side of the story accurately. California EDD will contact your employer and investigate the separation. This is actually one of the most common disputes they handle. Gather any documentation you have - emails, the meeting notice, any written communication about your position being eliminated. If your employer falsely reports you quit, you can dispute their account and California EDD will make a determination.

NeonNova
I have no written documentation, the whole thing was verbal. Is that going to hurt me?
0 coins
Chloe Martin
It makes things harder but not impossible. Your testimony vs. your employer's creates a he-said-she-said situation that California EDD has to adjudicate. Be consistent, specific, and detailed in your account. Note the date, time, who was in the room, what was said. Even without written proof, claimants do win these disputes regularly.
0 coins
StarStrider
If your claim goes into adjudication over this and you need to get someone at California EDD to hear your account of what happened, getting through by phone is critical. Regular calling is almost impossible. I'd recommend trying Claimyr at claimyr.com - I used it when I had a separation dispute and it was the only way I got to actually talk to a human at California EDD within a reasonable timeframe.

lol I remember filing my first UI claim and being completely baffled. It gets easier each time which is both reassuring and kind of sad

AuthorHa, hopefully I won't have to do it too many more times but I do feel a little better knowing it gets more familiar.

After my third time going through it I basically had the whole process memorized. California EDD hasn't changed their UI Online system much so it's pretty consistent.

OP just checking in - did you end up filing? How did it go?
0 coins
AstroAce
AuthorYES! Filed the same day I posted this. Took me about 40 minutes. It asked for way more employment history than I expected (18 months worth) but I got through it. Claim status says 'pending' right now. Fingers crossed it doesn't go into adjudication.

That's great! Pending is normal at first. Just make sure you start your weekly certifications on your assigned schedule even though nothing has been paid out yet.

For anyone finding this thread later who has questions about how do I file for unemployment in California, here's a quick reference: - File at myedd.edd.ca.gov as soon as you're unemployed - Have 18 months of employment history ready - Register on CalJOBS within 21 days - Certify weekly without fail - Report any earnings during benefit weeks - Keep a job search log with at least 1 employer contact per week - If something goes wrong and you need to reach California EDD by phone, expect long waits - Claimyr (claimyr.com) can help you get through without spending hours on hold Good luck everyone.

Update from me - my pending status finally changed to approved at the 4 week mark and I got my first two weekly payments deposited to my EDD card. Hang in there everyone, it does eventually move.
