How do I collect unemployment in California EDD? Step-by-step help needed
I just got laid off last Friday and I have absolutely no idea how to collect unemployment. I've never had to file before and the California EDD website is honestly overwhelming me. I don't even know where to start - do I call them? Go online? I found the edd.ca.gov site but there are like six different things to click on and I'm not sure which one applies to me. I was working full time at a logistics company for about 2 years before they let me go, no misconduct or anything, they just downsized our whole department. I heard you have to file within a certain time or you lose money? Is that true? Any help walking me through how to collect unemployment in California would be genuinely appreciated because I'm already stressed about bills.

First thing - don't panic, you can absolutely do this. Here's how to collect unemployment through California EDD step by step: 1. Go to edd.ca.gov and click 'File a UI Claim' under the Unemployment Insurance section 2. You'll create a myEDD account if you don't have one 3. Complete the online application - takes about 45 minutes 4. Have your employer info, dates of employment, and reason for separation ready 5. After filing, you'll get a confirmation and then wait for your award letter The 'file within a certain time' thing is real - benefits are calculated from the Sunday of the week you file, not the week you were laid off. So every week you wait is potentially a week of benefits you won't get back. File TODAY if you can.

AuthorOkay this is super helpful. So I literally just go to edd.ca.gov and click UI claim? I was looking at the wrong section I think. Does it matter that I was laid off Friday - do I count the week from last Sunday?

Liam McGuire
Yes exactly, file at edd.ca.gov. And yes - your benefit week starts on Sunday, so your first week would technically be the Sunday before your layoff. When you file it'll ask for your last day worked and handle the dates. Just get that application in today.

This. Filing fast matters more than people realize. I waited 2 weeks thinking I had to wait for my final paycheck to clear first and lost out on those weeks entirely. Don't make my mistake.

Adding to what was said above - when you're filling out the application make sure you have these things handy: - Your Social Security number - Your employer's name, address, and phone number - Exact start and end dates of employment - Your banking info for direct deposit (highly recommend setting this up instead of waiting for a debit card) After you file your initial claim, California EDD will mail you a form called the DE 4581 (Claim for Continued Benefits) which walks you through next steps. You'll also need to start filing weekly certifications every week to actually receive payment - the claim just opens the case, you have to certify weekly to trigger each payment.

AuthorWait so after I file the initial claim I also have to do something weekly? I didn't know that. What is the weekly certification exactly?
0 coins
Giovanni Greco
Yes - the weekly certification is basically you telling California EDD 'I'm still unemployed and actively looking for work this week.' You answer questions about whether you worked, earned any money, were available for work, etc. You have to do it every single week or you won't get paid that week. You can do it online through UI Online on the myEDD portal or by phone using the EDD Tele-Cert system.

One thing nobody mentions when explaining how to collect unemployment - after your claim is filed you might hit something called 'adjudication' especially since it sounds like you were part of a layoff. Don't freak out if your status shows that. It just means they need to verify your separation reason with your employer before releasing funds. For a standard layoff this usually clears on its own within 2-4 weeks. If it gets stuck in adjudication longer than that or you have questions about your claim status, honestly the hardest part is getting someone at California EDD on the phone. I spent weeks trying before someone told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that holds your place in the phone queue and calls you when an EDD agent is available. Saved me so much time. They also have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10

AuthorWhat does adjudication mean exactly? Is that like a problem with my claim? I'm worried now.
0 coins
Dylan Wright
Not necessarily a problem at all - for a layoff like yours it's usually just routine verification. California EDD contacts your former employer to confirm you were laid off and not fired for cause. Since you said it was a downsizing situation you should be fine. Adjudication just means 'under review' basically.

Sofia Torres
Adjudication sounds way scarier than it is. Mine went to adjudication and I was so stressed for 3 weeks and then it just approved on its own. The waiting is the worst part.

ADJUDICATION IS A NIGHTMARE lol it took me 6 weeks. but yeah for a normal layoff usually fine. definitely look into that claimyr thing if you need to call EDD because getting through is basically impossible otherwise

ok so i went thru this last year, here's what actually happens timeline wise so u know what to expect: Week 1: File your claim online Week 2-3: Get your award letter showing your weekly benefit amount Week 1-2 (yes overlap): Start certifying weekly even before you get the letter Week 3-4ish: First payment hits if no adjudication issues Also there's a 'waiting week' in California where your first certified week doesn't get paid, its just a required waiting period. So your SECOND certified week is when you see your first actual payment. Confusing but thats how it works.

QuantumQuasar
AuthorThe waiting week thing is confusing - so I certify week 1 and get nothing, then certify week 2 and that's when payment starts?
0 coins
Dmitry Smirnov
Exactly right. Week 1 certification = waiting week = $0. Week 2 certification onward = paid weeks. Some people think something went wrong when they certify and get nothing the first time but it's normal.

For someone asking how to collect unemployment for the first time, the job search requirement is something people miss. In California you need to search for work every week you're collecting benefits - currently it's 3 job search activities per week. You need to keep a log of these. EDD can audit you and ask for proof so keep records of every application, resume sent, job fair attended, etc. Don't skip this even if you think you'll be back to work quickly.

Author3 job search activities per week - does applying to jobs on Indeed count? Or does it have to be more formal?
0 coins
Amara Eze
Yes Indeed applications count. LinkedIn applications count. Direct company website applications count. Even creating or updating your resume on a job site can count in some cases. Just document everything - screenshot the confirmation emails or write down the company name, position, date, and how you applied. Simple spreadsheet works great.

Also register with CalJOBS (caljobs.ca.gov) - that's California's official job search system and EDD sometimes specifically wants to see activity there. Worth doing regardless.

wait do u have to do job search if ur on standby status? i thought standby was different
0 coins
Sofia Torres
The standby question someone raised is actually important - if your employer told you the layoff is temporary and you might be called back within a few weeks, you might qualify for standby status. That means you're exempted from the weekly job search requirement while you wait to be recalled. You have to request it when you file or shortly after and EDD has to approve it. Just mentioning it since OP said it was a downsizing - if there's any chance of being called back, look into standby.

QuantumQuasar
AuthorThey didn't say anything about calling us back honestly, it felt pretty permanent. But good to know that's a thing.

Sofia Torres
Yeah sounds like regular UI for you then. Standby is more for seasonal workers or temporary shutdowns. Just keep up with your 3 weekly job searches and you'll be fine.

can i ask a dumb question - when it asks about your base period earnings on the application what does that mean?? i helped my roommate file last month and we got confused on that part
0 coins
Liam McGuire
Not a dumb question at all. The base period is the 12 month period California EDD looks at to calculate how much you'll receive. For most claims it's the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed. EDD pulls your wage records from your employers automatically so you don't have to calculate it yourself - they already have it on file from payroll tax records. You just verify the employers are correct.
0 coins
GalacticGuardian
ohhhh okay that makes way more sense. so we didn't actually have to like add anything up ourselves?
0 coins
Liam McGuire
Correct - EDD calculates it for you using employer wage reports. Your award letter will show the base period quarters they used and the wages recorded. You just need to flag it if an employer is missing or amounts look wrong.

Something worth knowing about how to collect unemployment in California - your weekly benefit amount (WBA) is roughly 60-70% of what you earned during your highest earning quarter in the base period, up to a maximum. The max WBA in California right now is around $450/week. So if you were making decent money you'll hit that cap. Won't fully replace your income but it's something.

QuantumQuasar
Author450 a week is less than I was making but definitely helps. Is there any way to see what my benefit amount will be before the award letter arrives?

EDD has a UI Benefits Calculator on their website you can use to estimate. Just google 'California EDD UI Benefits Calculator' - it's a rough estimate but gives you an idea. Won't be exact until your official award letter.

the calculator is pretty accurate in my experience, i was within like $10 of what it estimated

Circling back on the phone contact issue because this thread is great but one thing that catches people off guard - if California EDD sends you a notice saying they need to interview you about your claim or verify something, you absolutely have to respond or your claim gets denied automatically. These interviews are done by phone and scheduling them through the EDD website can be confusing. If you miss one or need to reschedule and can't get through, that Claimyr service I mentioned (claimyr.com) is genuinely useful for that situation. The video walkthrough at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 shows exactly how it works.

AuthorThat's really good to know. I'll save that info just in case. Hopefully I won't need it but better to be prepared.

Seconding this - missing a phone interview is the #1 way people accidentally get denied on otherwise valid claims. Keep an eye on your myEDD messages inbox, that's where EDD sends notices now, not always by mail.

One more practical thing for the OP - after you file, download the UI Online app or bookmark the myEDD portal and check it every couple days. Your claim status updates there first before any mail arrives. You can also see your payment history once they start, confirm your certifications went through, and respond to any messages from EDD. Way faster than waiting for paper mail.

AuthorIs the myEDD portal the same as UI Online or are they different?

Connor Gallagher
They're connected - myEDD is the login/account system, and UI Online is the unemployment-specific section within it. Once you log into myEDD you'll see UI Online as one of the service options. Same login credentials.

anyone else have trouble with the ID.me verification part? when i set up my myEDD account i got stuck on the identity verification step for like two days. kept failing the photo ID upload

Yes! The ID.me verification is notoriously finicky. Best tips: use your phone camera instead of a webcam, make sure your ID isn't expired, use plain lighting without shadows on the document, and try a different browser if it keeps failing. Chrome tends to work better than Safari for it.

ok so i gotta ask - my situation is a little different. i was part time not full time. can i still collect unemployment? i work like 20hrs a week at a coffee shop and got laid off
0 coins
Liam McGuire
Yes, part-time workers can absolutely collect unemployment in California! Eligibility is based on your total wages earned in the base period, not whether you were full or part-time. You need to have earned at least $1,300 in your highest base period quarter, or at least $900 in your highest quarter AND your total base period earnings need to be 1.25x that highest quarter amount. Part time earnings count the same as full time. File and let EDD determine eligibility - many part-timers do qualify.

For the OP or anyone else trying to figure out how to collect unemployment - one thing that confused me was understanding what 'able and available for work' means on the weekly certification. It doesn't mean you have to have applied to 50 jobs or be by your phone 24/7. It just means you weren't sick, injured, or otherwise unable to work that week AND you were available to accept a job if one was offered. Even if you had a doctor's appointment or whatever you can still answer yes as long as you were generally available.

QuantumQuasar
AuthorWhat if I went on a short trip during the week? Does that count as not available?
0 coins
Sofia Torres
Generally if you were still available and actively looking for work during the trip it's fine. If you were completely unavailable for the whole week, like a 7-day vacation where you couldn't have accepted a job, that would technically be a week you shouldn't certify for. Short trips where you're still accessible are usually fine but use your judgment.

I've heard EDD will sometimes ask about this in an audit. Just make sure your job search activities still happened that week and you can document them.

not to derail but does getting unemployment affect your taxes? first time collecting and i don't want a surprise in april

Important question! Yes - unemployment benefits are taxable income at the federal level. California actually does NOT tax unemployment at the state level which is nice. When you set up your claim you can opt to have 10% withheld for federal taxes automatically, which I highly recommend to avoid owing a lump sum at tax time. You'll get a 1099-G form from EDD in January showing your total benefits paid for the year.

Yara Khoury

Has anyone used the EDD phone system through Tele-Cert? My internet has been spotty lately and I'm worried about certifying online. Is the phone option reliable?
0 coins
Amara Eze
Tele-Cert (1-866-333-4606) works fine for basic weekly certifications. You call in, enter your SSN and PIN, answer the same questions you'd answer online, and it processes the same way. Good backup option. Just note it's not useful for anything beyond certifications - if you have a question about your claim or need to talk to an actual agent, you need a different EDD number.

Zainab Ahmed
Good to know. What number do you call if you actually need to speak to someone?

The main EDD unemployment line is 1-800-300-5616. But getting through to an actual person is genuinely brutal - high volume, long holds, frequent disconnects. If you really need to reach someone, look into Claimyr at claimyr.com - it navigates the phone queue for you and calls you back when an agent is ready. Way less painful than redialing for hours.

i made a mistake on my weekly cert, selected wrong answer and then submitted before i realized. now im panicking did i commit fraud??
0 coins
Dylan Wright
Take a breath - one honest mistake on a certification does not equal fraud. Fraud requires intent to deceive. What you should do is contact EDD as soon as possible to report the error and clarify. Document that you're proactively correcting it. EDD can adjust certifications in some cases. If you're having trouble getting through to anyone, that's where a service like Claimyr (claimyr.com) helps - it got me through to an agent same day when I had an urgent correction to make.
0 coins
Keisha Taylor
okay that actually makes me feel better. i'll try to get through to them and explain. what kind of mistake is considered fraud then?
0 coins
Dylan Wright
Fraud is intentional - things like knowingly reporting you didn't work when you did, or lying about your reason for separation. An accidental wrong click that you immediately try to correct is not that. EDD distinguishes between claimant errors and intentional misrepresentation.
