Where to file for unemployment in California EDD - first time claimant needs help
I got laid off from my job at a logistics company last Friday and I have no idea where to even start with filing for unemployment. My manager said something about going online but I honestly don't know which website is the official one or if I should be calling somewhere instead. I've never had to do this before and I'm kind of overwhelmed by the whole thing. Do I file through California EDD? Is there a specific portal I need to use? And does it matter that my last day was Friday - should I have filed sooner? Any help would be really appreciated, I don't even know what questions to ask at this point.

Welcome - don't panic, you're in the right place to get started. For California, you file through the California EDD (Employment Development Department). The official website is edd.ca.gov and you'll want to click on 'UI Online' to create your account and submit your initial claim. A few things to know right away: your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file, so the sooner you submit your initial claim the better. You don't lose benefits for the days already passed but you can't go back further than your filing week. Also, California EDD has a one-week unpaid waiting period built in - your first week of eligibility won't be paid. That's normal and expected. Go to edd.ca.gov, click on 'File a UI Claim,' create a myEDD account if you don't have one, and walk through the application. It usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour if you have your employment info handy.

AuthorThank you so much! So I just go to edd.ca.gov directly? I was worried about accidentally landing on a fake site or something. And what employment info should I have ready before I start the application?

Carmen Ruiz
Yes, edd.ca.gov is the only official site. Have your Social Security number, your employer's name and address, your last day of work, your total wages from the past 18 months if possible, and your bank account info for direct deposit. The system will walk you through everything step by step.

AuthorThat's really good to know, I'm going to do it tonight then. Did you have any trouble with the website when you filed?

One thing that trips up first-time filers - after you submit your initial claim through UI Online at edd.ca.gov, you're not done. You'll need to certify for benefits every two weeks by answering questions about your job search activity and whether you worked or earned any money during those weeks. California EDD calls this 'certifying for benefits' and you do it through the same UI Online portal. If you miss your certification window your payment gets delayed. Also set up direct deposit right away during the initial filing - it's way faster than waiting for a paper check. If you run into any issues getting through to California EDD by phone during the process, I actually used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to a live agent when I had questions about my claim status. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - basically it holds your place in the call queue so you're not sitting on hold for hours. Saved me a lot of frustration when I needed to talk to someone.

AuthorWait so I have to keep certifying every two weeks forever until I find a job? And what kind of job search stuff do I have to report?
0 coins
Zoe Dimitriou
Yes exactly, every two weeks until you either find work, exhaust your benefits, or become ineligible. For job search activities California EDD requires you to make at least 3 contacts per week - applying to jobs, attending interviews, things like that. Keep a log with dates, employer names, position titles, and contact methods. California EDD can ask to verify these at any time.

the claimyr thing actually works, i was skeptical but i had a pending issue on my claim and needed to talk to someone. got through in like an hour instead of the usual nightmare

ok so WHERE exactly do you file - let me just spell it out super simple 1. Go to edd.ca.gov 2. Click 'File a UI Claim' 3. Create a myEDD account (or log in if you somehow already have one) 4. Fill out the initial claim application 5. Wait for your Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award letter 6. Start certifying for benefits every two weeks That's literally the whole process to get started. The website is pretty intuitive once you're in there. Just don't use any third party sites that charge you money to 'help' file - California EDD is free to file with directly.

AuthorThis is perfect thank you. So the myEDD account is the same as UI Online? Or are those two different things?
0 coins
Jamal Anderson
myEDD is your login/account system. UI Online is the platform you use once you're logged in to actually manage your claim, certify, check payment status, etc. You create your myEDD credentials first and then access UI Online through it. Think of myEDD as the door and UI Online as the room inside.

I went through this exact thing eight months ago - first layoff in 15 years and I felt completely lost. The website is actually easier than I expected. What I'll warn you about is the phone situation. If you ever need to actually TALK to someone at California EDD (which you might, especially if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason) - that's where the real struggle begins. I spent days trying to get through. Phone lines are constantly busy, you get disconnected, it's genuinely awful. Just flagging that now so you're not blindsided if you need help down the road.

Yuki Yamamoto
AuthorWhat is adjudication? Is that something that might happen to me?
0 coins
Liam McGuire
Adjudication is basically when California EDD needs to investigate your claim before approving it - usually happens if there's a question about why you were separated from your job, or if your employer contests the claim. Not everyone goes through it but it's pretty common. If it happens your claim gets held and reviewed before payments start. Can take a few weeks.

dont forget you also have to register with CalJOBS at some point - i think california edd requires it as part of your job search stuff. i honestly forgot to do it and it caused a small headache later
0 coins
Carmen Ruiz
This is correct - California EDD requires most claimants to register with CalJOBS (the state's job search database) within 21 days of filing. You do it at caljobs.ca.gov. It's separate from your EDD account but linked to your eligibility requirements. Don't skip this step.

Filing online is definitely the way to go. I made the mistake of trying to call California EDD to file my claim over the phone and gave up after two days of busy signals. The UI Online application on edd.ca.gov took me maybe 40 minutes and I got my confirmation the same day. Way less painful than dealing with the phone lines.

Yuki Yamamoto
AuthorYeah I think I'll stick to the website, especially after hearing about the phone situation. Is there any reason I would NEED to call them?
0 coins
Giovanni Ricci
Most of the initial filing is fine online. You'd really only need to call if your claim got stuck, went into adjudication, or you had a complicated situation like multiple employers or self-employment income mixed in. Basic W2 employee layoff? Website should handle it fine.

PLEASE do not go to any site that asks you to pay money to file your unemployment claim. I see people get scammed by this all the time. California EDD filing is FREE. The ONLY official website is edd.ca.gov. There are fake sites that look similar and charge fees. Always check that the URL says edd.ca.gov before entering any personal information!!!

AuthorYeah this was one of my worries, thanks for the warning. I'll bookmark the official site right now.

Smart move. Also once you get your account set up, make sure your password is strong and don't share your login with anyone. UI fraud is a real thing and if someone hijacks your account it can take months to sort out with California EDD.

I want to add something nobody mentioned yet - when you fill out the initial claim make sure you answer the separation reason accurately. If you were laid off (company downsizing, position eliminated, etc.) that's generally an automatic qualifier for benefits. If there's any ambiguity in how you describe it, California EDD might open an investigation or ask follow-up questions. Just be specific and honest about what happened - 'laid off due to company downsizing' is clearer than just 'no longer employed there.

Yuki Yamamoto
AuthorGood tip. My situation is pretty clear - whole department got eliminated due to a restructuring. Should I mention specifically that it was a department elimination or just say layoff?
0 coins
QuantumQuest
I would say something like 'laid off - department eliminated due to company restructuring.' The more specific the better. California EDD just wants to verify it wasn't a quit or a termination for cause. Clear business-side layoffs usually process faster.

Carmen Ruiz
This is solid advice. The separation reason is one of the most important fields in the initial application. Vague answers sometimes trigger adjudication reviews that can delay your first payment by weeks.

quick question - i know this thread is about where to file but can someone tell me if you can file if you were a part time worker? asking for a friend who only worked like 20 hours a week
0 coins
Carmen Ruiz
Yes, part-time workers can qualify for California unemployment benefits. Eligibility is based on your base period earnings, not hours worked. California EDD looks at wages earned in a specific 12-month period and you need to have earned at least $1,300 in your highest quarter or at least $900 in your highest quarter with total base period earnings of 1.25 times your high quarter earnings. Your friend should file and let California EDD determine eligibility - don't assume you don't qualify without actually applying.

ohh ok! thank you, ill pass that along

Something worth knowing about timing - since you were laid off on Friday, you should file your initial claim before the end of this week if possible. Your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file. So if you file tonight (or any day this week) your claim week starts this past Sunday. If you wait until next week, you lose this week entirely. Not a huge amount of money but it adds up.
0 coins
Yuki Yamamoto
AuthorFiling tonight for sure then. I didn't realize the week structure worked that way.
0 coins
Zoe Dimitriou
Yeah the Sunday-Saturday week thing is important to understand. All your certification periods will follow that same calendar. When you certify every two weeks you're answering questions covering two complete Sunday-Saturday weeks.
0 coins
Liam McGuire
Also just to add - your waiting period week (the unpaid first week) will be this first week you claim. So you wont get paid for it but it still counts and needs to be certified. Confusing system but that's how it works.
0 coins
Jamal Anderson
One more thing for a first timer - after you file your initial claim, California EDD will mail you a few documents: - Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award (shows your weekly benefit amount) - EDD Debit Card (this is how they pay you unless you set up direct deposit) - Information about your claim The award notice usually arrives within 10 days. Your weekly benefit amount is calculated based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. Maximum in California right now is $450/week. If your wages were high enough you'll hit that cap.
0 coins
Yuki Yamamoto
AuthorIs $450 really the max? That seems pretty low compared to what I was making.
0 coins
Jamal Anderson
Yeah California's max weekly benefit amount hasn't kept pace with cost of living unfortunately. $450 is the current cap regardless of how much you were making above that threshold. There are ongoing discussions in the legislature about raising it but that's where it stands now.
0 coins
Amara Eze
It's honestly embarrassing how low that cap is compared to other states. California has one of the highest costs of living and one of the lower benefit caps. The system needs a serious overhaul.

this is gonna sound dumb but do you have to be a california resident to file with california edd? my cousin was working in california but lives in nevada, not sure which state she'd file with
0 coins
Carmen Ruiz
Not a dumb question at all. Unemployment benefits follow the state where you WORKED, not where you live. So if your cousin worked for a California employer and paid California payroll taxes, she would file with California EDD even though she lives in Nevada. She would file at edd.ca.gov just like any California-based claimant.

for real though the hardest part isn't filing it's what comes after. getting a real person at california edd on the phone if something goes wrong is like trying to win the lottery. i had a simple question about my weekly certification and it took me 11 days of calling to get through. no exaggeration. 11 days.

AuthorThat's terrifying honestly. Is there no other way to contact them?

There's an online messaging system called Ask EDD but honestly the responses are generic and slow. For anything that actually needs a real resolution you need to talk to someone. I eventually used Claimyr (claimyr.com) which basically gets you into the phone queue without you having to sit there hitting redial all day. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that explains it. Wish I had known about it at day 1 instead of day 11.

Since you mentioned being overwhelmed - one thing that helped me when I first filed was writing down my claim confirmation number and taking a screenshot of the confirmation page right when I submitted. California EDD doesn't always send immediate email confirmation and having that number saved my sanity when I was trying to track my claim status later.
0 coins
Yuki Yamamoto
AuthorOh that's a really practical tip, I'll definitely do that. Is there a way to check claim status online after you file?
0 coins
Giovanni Ricci
Yes! Once you're logged into UI Online you can see your claim status, payment history, and certification schedule. It won't update in real time but usually reflects changes within a day or two. Just don't panic if it says 'pending' for a while after you first file - that's completely normal while they process everything.
0 coins
Liam McGuire
Coming back to add - make sure you understand what 'able and available' means for California EDD. Every time you certify you'll be asked if you were able to work and available for work during those weeks. If you say no to either one for any week (like if you were sick or had a scheduled vacation) California EDD can deny benefits for those specific weeks. You need to be genuinely available and actively seeking work to maintain eligibility. This trips people up when they answer the certification questions without understanding what California EDD is actually asking.
0 coins
Yuki Yamamoto
AuthorWhat if I have a doctor's appointment or something during the week - does that count as not being available?
0 coins
Liam McGuire
A single appointment doesn't make you unavailable. 'Available for work' means you're generally able to accept full time employment if offered. You can still have appointments, family commitments, etc. You'd only say no to able/available if you literally couldn't work that whole week due to illness, injury, scheduled travel out of the country, or similar circumstances.
0 coins
Zoe Dimitriou
Also worth noting - if you turn down any job offer during your claim period, California EDD will want to know about it and why. Refusing 'suitable work' without good cause can disqualify you. Suitable work is generally defined as work similar to your previous employment in pay and conditions.

UPDATE US when you actually file!! want to know how it goes for a first timer going through the process right now. also genuinely good luck - the california unemployment system is functional but it's definitely not user friendly and the wait times for payments can be stressful. just stay on top of your certifications and keep good records of your job search activities.

Last practical tip before you go file: when the application asks about your reason for separation, choose the most accurate option from the dropdown. For a layoff due to department elimination the correct selection is typically 'lack of work' or 'layoff.' Don't select anything suggesting you quit or were fired for cause. That single selection affects whether California EDD needs to investigate your separation further or can just process it straight through. Straightforward layoffs with 'lack of work' selected usually have shorter processing times.

Yuki Yamamoto
AuthorGot it - lack of work it is. That's accurate to what actually happened so that's an easy one.

Jamal Anderson
Perfect. And if California EDD sends you a questionnaire in the mail asking for more details about your separation, fill it out and return it IMMEDIATELY. Don't let it sit. Delays in responding to their requests extend how long your claim takes to process.
