How do you get unemployment in California? First time filing with EDD and completely lost
Okay so I just got laid off last Friday and I have no idea what I'm doing. I've never filed for unemployment before in my life and everyone I ask just says 'go apply online' but that doesn't really help me understand HOW any of this works. Like do I just go to a website and fill something out? Do I need to go somewhere in person? What even is California EDD and how does it connect to unemployment benefits? I was working at a distribution warehouse for about 2 years making around $22/hr and my employer definitely laid me off, it wasn't like I quit or got fired for cause or anything. I have my last pay stub and my employer info. Is that enough to get started? I'm really stressed out because rent is due in three weeks and I don't even know how long it takes to get approved or receive money. Any help would be completely appreciated, even just pointing me in the right direction.

Welcome to the California EDD unemployment process — it's confusing at first but once you understand the basic steps it actually makes more sense. Here's the rundown for how to get unemployment in California: 1. File your initial claim at www.edd.ca.gov through their UI Online portal 2. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, your employer's info (name, address, phone), and your last day of work 3. After you file, EDD will mail you a determination letter and set up your benefit year 4. You'll need to certify for benefits every two weeks (this is called filing your weekly claims, even though you do it biweekly) 5. Money gets deposited to a Bank of America EDD debit card or you can set up direct deposit Since you were laid off with no fault on your part, you should be in good shape for approval. The base period they use to calculate your weekly benefit amount is your earnings from about 5-17 months before your claim date, so your warehouse wages should factor in well. Hang in there, most straightforward layoff cases get approved.

AuthorThank you so much for breaking this down. So I file at edd.ca.gov? Is it called UI Online specifically? I just want to make sure I'm going to the right place and not some scam site.

Yes exactly — edd.ca.gov is the official California EDD website. UI Online is the portal within that site where you manage your claim. Just go to edd.ca.gov and look for the Unemployment Insurance section, it'll guide you to UI Online from there. Definitely don't use any third party sites that charge fees to file, filing is completely free.

this is solid advice. only thing id add is file ASAP. there's a one week unpaid waiting period before benefits start and that clock doesn't start until you file. every day you wait is a day of potential benefits gone.

One thing that trips up a lot of first timers is the difference between filing your initial claim and filing your weekly certifications. They're two separate things. Filing your initial claim starts the process and EDD reviews your eligibility. Then every two weeks you have to log back in and certify that you were available for work, actively looking for jobs, and didn't earn over a certain amount. If you skip your weekly certifications you won't get paid even if you're fully approved. Took me an embarrassingly long time to figure that out when I first got laid off lol.

Javier Torres
AuthorWait so the weekly certifications are separate from the actual application? I would have totally missed that. How do you know when to do them?

EDD assigns you specific certification dates, usually starting about 2-3 weeks after you file your initial claim. You'll get a notice in your UI Online inbox and sometimes by mail. There's also a section in UI Online that shows your next certification date. Just keep checking back.

Also worth knowing you can certify by phone too using EDD Tele-Cert at 1-866-333-4606 if the website is being annoying. I switch between the two depending on which is cooperating that day lol

I was in your exact spot about eight months ago, first time ever dealing with unemployment after getting laid off from logistics. The filing part online isn't too bad but what really got me was when my claim went into adjudication and I couldn't reach anyone at EDD to find out what was happening. Kept calling and getting busy signals or sitting on hold for two hours and getting disconnected. Someone on a thread like this actually told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it genuinely saved my sanity. It's a service that gets you through to an actual EDD phone agent without you having to sit on hold forever. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. Once I got through to someone they were able to clear up the adjudication issue the same day and my payments released within a week. Hopefully your claim goes smooth and you never need it, but if you hit a wall trying to reach EDD it's worth knowing about.

AuthorWhat even is adjudication? Is that something that happens to everyone or is it like a red flag?

NebulaNomad
Adjudication is basically when EDD needs to investigate a specific issue with your claim before they can approve it. It's not automatic for everyone but it's pretty common. It can happen if your employer contests your claim, if there's a question about why you left, or sometimes just randomly. It can delay your payments by weeks which is super stressful. That's why being able to actually talk to someone at EDD matters.

Adjudication happened to me too and it was brutal. Four weeks of nothing and then they just approved it with no explanation. The not knowing is the worst part.

good heads up on claimyr, edd phone lines are genuinely impossible sometimes. that video explains it pretty well too

ok so just to be clear you DO NOT need to go anywhere in person. the whole thing is online now. edd.ca.gov, make an account, file the claim. takes like 45 minutes maybe. have your work history ready

AuthorThat's such a relief to hear, I was worried I'd have to take a number somewhere and wait in line for hours.

nah those days are gone. all online. just don't use your phone to file the initial claim if you can help it, the website works better on desktop

One more important thing about how to get unemployment that nobody mentions upfront — California EDD uses what's called a base period to figure out your weekly benefit amount. They look at your wages during the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed. So your weekly benefit amount won't just be based on your most recent paycheck, it's an average across that whole period. The maximum weekly benefit amount in California right now is $450. For someone making $22/hr full time your weekly benefit would likely come out somewhere in the $300-$400 range depending on how consistent your hours were.

Javier Torres
AuthorSo my benefit won't be $22/hr times 40 hours? I was kind of hoping it would cover my full salary...

Unfortunately no, UI doesn't replace 100% of your income. It's generally designed to replace roughly 60-70% of your previous wages up to the maximum cap. It's meant to be a bridge while you job search, not a full replacement income.

Diego Rojas
yeah this was the reality check I needed when I filed. definitely not full pay but it keeps you afloat while you search. better than nothing for sure

Malik Johnson
Something to know going in: once you're approved and certifying, California has a job search requirement. You have to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of them. EDD can audit you and if you can't prove you were actively looking for work they can disqualify you and make you pay back benefits. Keep records of every application, every contact, dates and company names. Some people use a simple spreadsheet.
0 coins
Javier Torres
AuthorOh wow I did not know that. So I have to be actively applying even while waiting to be approved?
0 coins
Malik Johnson
The job search requirement kicks in once you start certifying for benefits, not necessarily while you're waiting for the initial determination. But yes, once payments start flowing you need to be meeting those weekly search requirements to stay eligible.
0 coins
Isabella Ferreira
The job search log doesn't have to be submitted every week, you just have to have it ready if EDD asks. But seriously keep it updated because if you get audited and can't produce records it's a nightmare.

I use Google Sheets for mine, works perfectly. Date, company, position, how you applied, contact info. Takes 2 minutes per entry

HOW LONG does it take to actually get money though because I just went through this and the wait was way longer than I expected. Filed my initial claim, waited for the determination letter, then had to wait for my first certification window, then waited for the payment to post to the EDD debit card. End to end it was like 5 weeks before I saw any money. Plan accordingly if you have bills coming up
0 coins
Javier Torres
Author5 weeks?? I was hoping for like 2 weeks max. Okay I need to rethink my budget situation.

Freya Thomsen
For a clean straightforward claim some people do see it faster, like 3-4 weeks. But 5 was my experience. If there's any adjudication or issue it can stretch way longer. I know people who waited 10+ weeks.

This is exactly why being able to reach EDD if something goes wrong is so important. Those delays are often caused by something that could be fixed in a single phone call if you could just get through to someone.

i got unemployment last year first time too! honestly once you get through the application it's not that scary. the hardest part for me was remembering to certify on time. set a reminder in your phone for every two weeks seriously
0 coins
Javier Torres
AuthorThat's a great tip about the reminder, I'd definitely space it out otherwise. How do you know what day to certify?

They give you a specific Sunday as your first certification date and then it's every other Sunday after that. UI Online shows it when you log in.

To directly answer the original question of how do you get unemployment in California — the official process is: - Confirm you meet basic eligibility (laid off or reduced hours, worked in CA during base period, earned enough wages, available and looking for work) - File initial claim online at edd.ca.gov/UI-Online - Respond to any requests from EDD quickly (they may mail you a questionnaire asking about your separation) - Wait for your award notice confirming your weekly benefit amount - Start certifying every two weeks within your certification window - Meet ongoing requirements (job search, available for work, report any earnings) The main gotchas are missing your certification window, not responding to EDD questionnaires fast enough, and not understanding that your claim can go into adjudication if EDD needs to verify something. Staying on top of your UI Online inbox is crucial.

Javier Torres
AuthorThis is the clearest step by step I've seen. Thank you. What do you mean by a questionnaire about separation?
0 coins
Omar Fawaz
EDD sometimes mails or sends through UI Online a form asking for more details about why you left your job — your last day, whether it was voluntary or involuntary, any severance etc. It's more common when your employer might contest the claim. If you get one, respond within the deadline or your claim can be delayed or denied.
0 coins
Malik Johnson
Responding to those questionnaires fast is honestly critical. I've seen people lose months of benefits because they ignored a letter that looked like junk mail.

quick thing — make sure you report any severance pay or vacation payout when you file. EDD treats those differently. Severance is usually treated as wages and can affect when your claim actually starts. If you got any kind of payout from your employer when you were laid off, mention it during the application.
0 coins
Javier Torres
AuthorI actually did get 2 weeks of severance pay. Does that mean my claim won't start for 2 weeks?
0 coins
Diego Rojas
Depends on how it's classified. Severance paid as a lump sum is sometimes treated differently than extended wages. EDD will factor it in during their review. Just make sure you disclose it accurately during the application — not disclosing it and then having it come up later can cause overpayment issues down the line.
0 coins
Emma Davis
Good catch. Being upfront about everything during the initial claim is always the right move. EDD cross-references wage data with employers so they usually find out anyway, better to have reported it yourself.
0 coins
Freya Thomsen
Also heads up that your employer gets notified when you file and has the right to respond with their version of the separation. Most employers who did a standard layoff won't contest it but if there was any drama around how you left, be prepared that they might push back and that's what triggers adjudication most often.
0 coins
Javier Torres
AuthorMy layoff was pretty clean, they had a company-wide reduction and gave us all paperwork. Should I keep that paperwork?
0 coins
Freya Thomsen
YES. Keep everything. The layoff notice, any emails confirming it, your separation paperwork. If your claim goes into adjudication for any reason that documentation is gold.
0 coins
Isabella Ferreira
Even just a screenshot of an email from HR confirming the layoff can make a huge difference if EDD needs to verify your separation reason.

heads up about the EDD debit card situation — when you get approved they automatically send a Bank of America debit card to your address on file. But you can switch to direct deposit to your own bank account by setting it up in UI Online. I personally prefer direct deposit because I had issues with the debit card taking extra days to post and my bank deposit was always faster.
0 coins
Javier Torres
AuthorGood to know. I'll set up direct deposit. Is there a limit on how soon after getting approved I can switch to it?
0 coins
Ravi Sharma
You can set it up in UI Online pretty much right away once your claim is active. Go to Payment Preferences in your UI Online dashboard. Takes a few days to activate so set it up before your first payment if you can.

For anyone reading this who gets stuck in adjudication or has trouble understanding why their claim is delayed, please don't just wait and hope it resolves itself. That's what I did for three weeks and nothing happened. You really do need to get on the phone with an EDD agent to move things forward. Since EDD phone lines are brutal, Claimyr (claimyr.com) is the tool I relied on to actually get through. Watch the video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 to see how it works. An EDD agent was able to see exactly what was holding my claim up and give me instructions to clear it in one call.

Is Claimyr actually legit? I've been skeptical of third party services for government stuff
0 coins
NebulaNomad
I was skeptical too honestly. But at that point I'd spent probably 8 hours total trying to get through to EDD through normal channels and was getting nowhere. The service just handles the hold time part — you still talk to an actual EDD agent when you connect. For something as stressful as a delayed claim it was worth it to me.

do you have to be a citizen to get unemployment in california? genuine question my coworker is asking

Emma Davis
You need to be legally authorized to work in the US. EDD requires that you have had legal work authorization during the base period when you earned the wages. Undocumented workers are not eligible for regular UI. For legal permanent residents and those with valid work authorization, yes they can qualify.

okay that's what I figured, thanks

Something I wish someone had told me when I first filed: the EDD UI Online inbox is NOT email. It's a separate inbox inside your UI Online account at edd.ca.gov. EDD will NOT contact you at your regular email for important claim notices. You have to actually log into UI Online and check the inbox tab. I almost missed a questionnaire deadline because I was waiting for an email that never came.
0 coins
Javier Torres
AuthorOh this is huge, I definitely would have missed that. So I need to log in regularly and check the inbox even when I'm not certifying?
0 coins
Isabella Ferreira
Yes exactly. I'd say check it at least twice a week. EDD can send time-sensitive notices that require a response within 10 days and the clock starts from the date they sent it, not the date you saw it.
0 coins
Diego Rojas
This is such an underrated tip. The UI Online inbox is where claims go to die if you don't stay on top of it.

Malik Johnson
Also turn on the notification settings in UI Online if you haven't. You can opt in to get an email alert (to your real email) when there's a new message in your UI Online inbox. That way you're not flying blind.

this whole thread is making me realize I should file for my layoff from 6 weeks ago that I just kept putting off ughhh. been living off savings thinking it would resolve itself. does it matter that i waited this long

Emma Davis
File immediately! You may be able to backdate your claim if you had good cause for the delay, but that's not guaranteed. At minimum file today and explain in your application when you actually became unemployed. Every week you delay is potentially lost benefits — you can't generally collect for weeks before you filed.

Sean O'Donnell
oh no. filing right now. thanks for the nudge.

can someone clarify — if i pick up a few gig shifts on doordash while collecting unemployment do I have to report that? what happens
0 coins
Omar Fawaz
Yes, you must report ALL earnings when you certify, including gig work. California EDD will reduce your weekly benefit amount based on what you earned but you typically don't lose the full benefit unless you earned over a certain threshold. The formula is: EDD disregards the first 25% of your weekly benefit amount, then reduces dollar for dollar beyond that. So partial work doesn't necessarily disqualify you, but you must report every dollar honestly. Not reporting is considered fraud and can result in overpayment demands plus penalties.
0 coins
StarSeeker
ok good to know. so I should report it but I won't necessarily lose everything. that makes sense
0 coins
Malik Johnson
The fraud risk is real though. EDD audits certifications and matches income data. The penalty for unreported earnings is way worse than just reporting them and taking the partial reduction. Always report.

Update for anyone following: I filed my initial claim this morning! Took about 50 minutes on my laptop. The system walked me through everything pretty logically and I made sure to disclose the severance like people mentioned. It says my claim is processing and to watch for a notice in my UI Online inbox. Feeling a lot less panicked now. Thanks everyone for all the help, this thread answered basically every question I had.
