How to get on unemployment in California - EDD claim filing guide
So I just got laid off two weeks ago from my warehouse job and I have no idea how to get on unemployment. I've never filed before and honestly the whole California EDD website is super confusing. I went to edd.ca.gov and there's like a million different links and I don't even know where to start. Do I apply through UI Online? Do I need to call them first? My manager told me I'd qualify since I was laid off (not fired) but I don't actually know how to get the process going. What documents do I need? How long does it take to get approved? Any help would be seriously appreciated because rent is due in three weeks and I'm kind of freaking out.

First thing - take a breath. Getting on unemployment through California EDD is definitely doable, you just need to know the steps. Here's what you do: 1. Go to edd.ca.gov and click on 'File a UI Claim' - this takes you to the UI Online portal 2. Create an account if you don't have one 3. Fill out your claim application - it'll ask for your employment history for the last 18 months, your employer's info, and your reason for separation 4. After submitting, you'll get a confirmation number - SAVE THIS 5. Wait for your EDD Customer Account Number to arrive by mail (usually 10 days) Since you were laid off and not fired for misconduct, you should qualify without any issues going into adjudication. The whole process from filing to first payment is usually 3-4 weeks if everything goes smoothly.

AuthorThank you! So I just go straight to UI Online and start filling it out? I don't need to call anyone first or get any forms from my employer?

Sofia Hernandez
Yep, go straight to UI Online. You don't need any forms from your employer - California EDD will contact them directly to verify your separation. Just have your last employer's name, address, and phone number ready along with your start and end dates.

this is the right advice. ui online is the way to go. calling EDD is basically impossible anyway lol took me 3 hours to get through once

One thing people miss when first filing - you need to file your initial claim within 7 days of your benefit week start date to avoid losing benefits for that week. Benefit weeks run Sunday to Saturday in California. So if your last day was a Wednesday, your first benefit week started the Sunday before that. Don't wait too long or you'll lose those first few days of eligibility.

AuthorWait so I might have already missed some days?? My last day was the 8th which was a Monday...

File TODAY if you haven't already. You can backdate your claim during the application but only within a limited window. The sooner you file the better - every day you delay could mean lost benefits.

omg yes this happened to me i waited like 2 weeks before filing and lost a full week of benefits. file asap

I just went through this exact process about 6 weeks ago after my company downsized. Honestly the hardest part wasn't filing the initial claim - it was trying to reach California EDD when I had questions about my claim status afterward. Spent days getting busy signals and disconnects. Someone in another thread recommended Claimyr (claimyr.com) for getting through to an actual EDD rep on the phone. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. Basically it navigates the phone system for you and calls you back when an agent is on the line. Saved me so much time when I needed to ask about my base period wages. Might be worth bookmarking for after you file, because questions WILL come up.

AuthorGood to know about Claimyr. Did your claim end up going through okay?

Yes! Approved after about 3.5 weeks. The Claimyr call helped me confirm my base period was calculated correctly which gave me peace of mind. Definitely keep it in your back pocket.

how much does claimyr cost tho

I'd check their site for current info on that - claimyr.com. For me the value was absolutely worth it compared to losing a whole day trying to get through on my own.

ok so real talk - when you fill out the application on UI Online it's gonna ask about your REASON FOR LEAVING. For a layoff you pick 'lack of work' not anything else. This is important. If you accidentally pick the wrong one it can trigger an investigation into your separation which delays everything and is a huge headache to fix. READ each option carefully before clicking.

Dylan Campbell
AuthorReally glad you said this. I was going to just click through quickly. I'll read everything carefully.

Keisha Johnson
Yes this is huge. I picked the wrong reason once (my first time filing) and it caused a 6 week adjudication delay. When the correct answer should have had me approved in like 2 weeks. Always choose your reason carefully and if unsure, 'lack of work' is the standard layoff code.

adjudication is basically EDD investigating your claim to make sure you're eligible. it's not automatically bad but it does slow things way down

Don't forget you'll need to certify for benefits every two weeks once your claim is approved. California EDD calls this 'certifying for benefits' and you do it through UI Online or by phone. You answer questions about whether you were able and available to work, whether you looked for work, and whether you earned any wages. If you skip a certification week you can lose those benefits permanently so set a reminder on your phone.

Dylan Campbell
AuthorSo filing the initial claim is just the first step - I have to keep checking in every two weeks? For how long?
0 coins
Paolo Rizzo
You certify every two weeks for as long as you're collecting benefits. California EDD regular UI lasts up to 26 weeks. You can certify online through UI Online or call the automated EDD Tele-Cert line which is usually easier to reach than the live agents.
0 coins
Sofia Hernandez
And during each certification you'll also need to report any job search activities. California requires you to search for work each week you collect benefits - minimum 3 job search activities per week. Keep a log of everywhere you apply with dates, job titles, and contact info in case EDD ever asks for it.

I went through this process last year and the thing nobody told me was that I'd need to verify my identity through ID.me before I could actually receive any payments. After I filed my claim and it was approved, I got stuck waiting because my identity verification was pending. The ID.me process through California EDD requires you to upload photos of your ID, do a selfie, and sometimes do a live video call. Don't let that step catch you off guard.
0 coins
Dylan Campbell
AuthorOh wow I had no idea about ID.me. Is that automatic or do I need to initiate it?
0 coins
QuantumQuest
EDD will send you an email or you'll see a notification in your UI Online inbox telling you to complete identity verification. Just watch your inbox closely after filing and respond to any requests quickly - delays in ID.me verification = delays in payment.

ID.me can take a few days if you have to do the video call option. Do the instant verification first using your phone camera. It works for most people without needing the call.

wait do you get paid weekly or bi weekly with California EDD? and does it go directly to your bank account or do they send checks
0 coins
Sofia Hernandez
Benefits are paid every two weeks after you certify. You can get paid via direct deposit (fastest - usually 2-3 business days after certifying) or they'll send you a Bank of America EDD debit card in the mail. Set up direct deposit through UI Online if you want faster access to your money.
0 coins
Connor O'Brien
oh okay makes sense. how long til you get the debit card if you dont set up direct deposit
0 coins
Paolo Rizzo
The EDD debit card takes about 7-10 business days to arrive after your claim is approved. Then payments load onto it after each certification. Direct deposit is definitely faster and easier if you have a bank account.

Something worth knowing - California EDD calculates your weekly benefit amount (WBA) based on what's called your 'base period' which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed. So if your wages fluctuated a lot between jobs, your benefit amount might be different than you expect. You can actually estimate your WBA before filing using the EDD benefit calculator at edd.ca.gov. Knowing your approximate amount upfront helps with budgeting.
0 coins
Dylan Campbell
AuthorI make decent wages so I hope the benefit amount is enough to cover basics. I'll check the calculator. What's the maximum weekly amount?
0 coins
Keisha Johnson
Maximum weekly benefit amount for California UI is currently $450 per week. It's not a ton but it's something while you job search. Your actual amount will be 60-70% of your average weekly wages up to that cap.

Yara Sabbagh
$450 max is rough honestly. that's why you gotta get your claim filed and approved fast so you can start collecting ASAP while you look for work

i applied for unemployment last month and the website kept logging me out while I was in the middle of filling out the application which was SO frustrating. if that happens to you just log back in and it should have saved your progress up to the last completed section. also use chrome browser not safari, safari gave me issues

yeah avoid safari and also internet explorer obviously. chrome or firefox work best for ui online in my experience

OP just wanted to add - after you file and get your EDD Customer Account Number in the mail, register for CalJOBS too (caljobs.ca.gov). California EDD requires you to register there and post your resume as part of the job search requirements. They don't always check immediately but it's a requirement and failing to do it can create issues with your claim down the line.
0 coins
Dylan Campbell
AuthorI didn't know about CalJOBS at all. Is that mandatory?
0 coins
Zainab Ibrahim
Yes, it's part of California's job search requirements for UI claimants. You also might get referred to a WorkSource or America's Job Center for reemployment services. Participating in those programs is also sometimes required depending on your claim.

I totally forgot about CalJOBS when I filed and got a notice weeks later about it. Just do it early to avoid any complications with your claim.

Can I just be real for a second - the California EDD system is a NIGHTMARE and OP you should prepare yourself mentally for frustration. I applied for unemployment in the fall and it took NINE weeks to get my first payment. Nine. Weeks. I did everything right, filed correctly, certified on time, did the ID.me thing, and still waited nine weeks. No explanation. No response to my messages in UI Online. Just silence and then eventually money appeared. The system is broken. Just file and then be ready to wait and fight.
0 coins
Dylan Campbell
AuthorThis is terrifying honestly. Did you ever find out what caused the delay?
0 coins
Amina Sy
NEVER got an explanation. My claim just shows approved and payments started. When I finally got through to a live agent at EDD they said there was nothing wrong with my claim and couldn't explain the delay. Absolutely maddening.

For situations like that where you really need to reach a live EDD agent - I mentioned Claimyr earlier in the thread (claimyr.com) but it's genuinely useful for exactly this kind of scenario where your claim seems stalled and you can't get any human to explain what's happening. Getting through to an actual rep when you're 9 weeks in with no payment is crucial.

I really wish I'd known about that. Spent so many hours on hold getting nowhere. Will remember it for next time (hopefully there isn't one

for the job search requirement thing - you need 3 job search activities per week. that includes applying for jobs BUT it also includes things like attending a job fair, posting your resume on a job site, or setting up an interview. keep a simple spreadsheet with the date, company name, position, and how you applied. if EDD ever audits your job search you'll be ready.
0 coins
Dylan Campbell
AuthorThat spreadsheet idea is smart. I'll start one as soon as my claim is approved.
0 coins
Dmitry Kuznetsov
actually start it now. technically your job search requirement starts from the first week you certify for benefits, which could be your very first week. document everything from day one.
0 coins
Paolo Rizzo
Also be aware that even if you have a week where you applied to 10 jobs, that doesn't bank extra credit for a slow week. It's 3 per week minimum, every week. EDD has audited people for this so take it seriously.

Just to add a positive note - I filed for California unemployment last spring and the whole process was actually pretty smooth for me. Filed online Monday, got my EDD account number in the mail about 8 days later, completed ID.me verification same day, certified for my first week the following Sunday, and had money in my direct deposit account within 3 days of certifying. About 5 weeks total from filing to first payment. It CAN work well when there are no complications.

Dylan Campbell
AuthorThis is really reassuring! Five weeks feels manageable if I can borrow a little from family in the meantime.

Oliver Fischer
Yeah I'd budget for 4-6 weeks just to be safe. If it comes faster great, but plan for the longer timeline. And make sure to certify on your very first eligible Sunday so you don't add extra delay.

one thing that messed me up - i didn't realize i had to report my last paycheck when I certified. like my employer paid me out my final check including vacation payout and i didn't report it and then got an overpayment notice months later demanding I pay it back. if you receive ANY money from your employer - final check, vacation payout, severance - report it during the certification week it covers. do NOT skip reporting it thinking it doesn't matter.
0 coins
Dylan Campbell
AuthorOh that's a really important thing to know. I did get a small vacation payout on my last check. I'll make sure to report that.
0 coins
StarSailor
yes definitely report it! the system asks about wages earned, not just wages paid, but for final checks and vacation payouts EDD has specific rules about which week it applies to. when in doubt, report it and let EDD do the calculation. an overpayment situation is way more stressful than just being honest upfront.

Severance packages can also affect your eligibility in some cases depending on how they're structured. If you got severance, might be worth calling EDD to clarify how it affects your claim. Claimyr at claimyr.com is useful for getting through to an agent for exactly that kind of specific question - their demo is at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see how it works before trying it.
0 coins
Yara Sabbagh
also nobody mentioned this but when you're filling out the application it asks if you're 'able and available to work' - ALWAYS answer yes unless you literally have a medical condition preventing you. this is one of the key eligibility requirements. if you have any temporary situation like caring for a sick family member that might limit your availability, California EDD has specific rules about that - look them up before answering. wrong answer there can get your claim denied.
0 coins
Dylan Campbell
AuthorNoted. I'm definitely able and available - I really need to work. Just need to find a new job.
0 coins
Yara Sabbagh
Then you're fine. Just make sure to answer that consistently every time you certify too. Each certification you confirm you were able and available for that two week period.

Question kinda related - does California EDD notify your previous employer when you file for unemployment? I'm worried about it affecting my reference or something with my last job
0 coins
Sofia Hernandez
Yes, EDD does notify your employer when you file a claim and gives them an opportunity to contest it. But if you were laid off, your employer generally won't contest it because there's no reason to - they let you go. It's really only an issue if there's a dispute over the reason for separation.
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
ok that makes sense. I was laid off so hopefully no issues there
0 coins
Keisha Johnson
Employers do get notified and can respond, but the vast majority of straightforward layoff claims never result in an employer challenge. The reference concern is separate from the UI claim - your manager can still give you a reference regardless of whether you collect unemployment. Those are completely different things.

Connor O'Brien
does anyone know if you can file for unemployment if you quit your job? asking for a friend lol
0 coins
Sofia Hernandez
Generally no - voluntarily quitting disqualifies you from California UI benefits UNLESS you quit for what EDD considers 'good cause.' Good cause examples include: your employer drastically reduced your pay or hours, unsafe working conditions, being asked to do something illegal, or having to move to follow a spouse who relocated for work. Quitting just because you didn't like the job or got a better offer doesn't qualify.
0 coins
Connor O'Brien
what about if you quit because your boss was making your life miserable
0 coins
Keisha Johnson
That's a gray area. EDD would want to know if you documented the issues, whether you tried to resolve them through HR, and whether the situation was serious enough to constitute 'good cause.' Hostile work environment claims do sometimes succeed but they're harder to prove than a clear-cut layoff. Your 'friend' would want to document everything and possibly consult with an employment attorney before filing.

Coming back to the original question - OP the TL;DR is: file at edd.ca.gov through UI Online today, choose 'lack of work' as your reason, have your work history ready, complete ID.me verification when prompted, register on CalJOBS, certify every two weeks on Sunday, do 3 job searches per week and log them, report all income. That's really the whole thing in a nutshell. Good luck!
