How can I get unemployment in California? First time filing with EDD and lost
I got laid off two weeks ago and honestly have no idea how to even start getting unemployment benefits. My manager said I'd qualify but the whole California EDD website is confusing me. I work in food service and this is literally the first time I've ever filed for anything like this. I don't even know what UI means or where to sign up. Do I go somewhere in person or is it all online now? I'm already behind on rent and starting to panic a little. Can someone walk me through what to do first?

First thing you need to do is go to edd.ca.gov and click on 'File a UI Claim.' UI just means Unemployment Insurance - that's the official name for what most people call unemployment benefits. The whole process is online now through a system called UI Online. You'll need to create an account first, then fill out the initial claim form. Make sure you have your employment history for the last 18 months ready, your Social Security number, and info about your last employer including their address and phone number. The claim usually takes a few days to process before you hear anything back.

Authorok thank you. Do I need like any specific documents or can I just fill it out from memory?

Isaiah Cross
You can fill it from memory but having your W-2 or last pay stub handy helps with exact employer info. The most important things are your SSN, your last day of work, and the reason you were separated - in your case it sounds like a layoff which is the easiest situation for getting approved.

also make sure you know your gross wages not net - they ask for before-tax earnings not what you actually took home

One thing nobody tells you right away - after you file your initial claim you have to also file weekly certifications every single week to actually get paid. A lot of first-timers think filing once is enough and then wonder why no money shows up. You certify for the previous week, answering questions about whether you worked, looked for jobs, were available for work, etc. Miss a week and you have to backdate it which is a whole extra headache.

Authorwait so its like a weekly thing forever?? how long does unemployment last in california

In California you can get up to 26 weeks of benefits in a regular claim year. So roughly 6 months if you certify every week without issues.

26 weeks goes fast trust me. Start job searching seriously from day one dont wait

Something I wish someone told me when I first filed - if you need to actually talk to someone at California EDD it is INCREDIBLY hard to get through on the phone. Like I spent days trying. A coworker told me about a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that basically gets you connected to an actual EDD agent without you having to sit on hold for hours. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. I used it when I had questions about my claim eligibility and got through way faster than I ever could on my own. Especially useful when you're new and have no idea what's going on with your claim status.

yeah calling EDD is basically impossible without help like that. I spent 3 days straight redialing and never got through

Exactly. And as a new filer you might actually need to speak with someone if anything flags on your claim during adjudication. Better to know your options early.

For food service workers specifically - California EDD will look at your base period wages to determine your weekly benefit amount. The base period is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed. If you worked full time in food service you should have enough wages to qualify. The minimum earnings needed are around $1,300 in your highest quarter or at least $900 in your highest quarter with total base period earnings of 1.25x that amount. Your weekly benefit amount will be roughly 60-70% of your average weekly earnings up to the state maximum.

Authorok I think I made enough but I honestly dont know what a quarter means in this context
0 coins
Jenna Sloan
A quarter is just a 3 month period - Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep, Oct-Dec. So your base period is basically a year of your recent work history. If you worked most of last year you almost certainly have enough wages to qualify.

the wage calculator on the EDD website can give you a rough estimate of your weekly amount before you even file if you want to know what to expect

dont forget you also have to register with CalJOBS which is californias job search website. EDD requires it as part of collecting benefits. its annoying but if you skip it you can get disqualified. you basically just create an account and upload a resume.

Joy Olmedo
Authorwait thats required? I hadnt heard about that part
0 coins
Kiara Greene
yep its part of the job search requirements. you also have to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log of them. EDD can ask to see your log at any time so keep records
0 coins
Isaiah Cross
Correct - the job search requirement is 3 activities per week during your normal claim. Things that count include submitting applications, attending job fairs, contacting employers, and a few other things. The CalJOBS registration is separate from your EDD claim but linked to it.

I went through this exact situation 8 months ago and I remember how lost I felt. The thing that confused me most was the difference between filing the initial claim and then the ONGOING weekly certifications. They feel like completely separate processes because they basically are. Your initial claim gets you set up and determines if you qualify and how much you get. The weekly certs are how you actually trigger each payment. You do them through UI Online every week during your certification period which opens up on Sunday.

Joy Olmedo
AuthorSunday specifically? like it only opens on certain days?
0 coins
Paloma Clark
Your certification period is specific to your claim - EDD assigns you either a Sunday or Saturday start date. Most people I know got Sunday. You can certify anytime after your period opens, the system is available 24/7 once it opens

I thought you had to do it on Sunday and was missing mine because I worked Sundays lol. Wish I knew you could do it any day after it opens

The waiting week is something people always get caught off guard by. When you first file a California EDD unemployment claim there's one week that you qualify for but don't get paid for - it's called the waiting week or waiting period. It's basically built into every initial claim. So if you file now don't expect your first payment to cover the very first week of unemployment, it gets skipped. This is normal and not a mistake in your claim.
0 coins
Joy Olmedo
Authorugh ok good to know. So I lose a week of pay basically
0 coins
Christian Burns
Yeah it's annoying but standard for all new California UI claims. After that waiting week every certified week should generate a payment within a few days assuming no issues with your claim
0 coins
Evelyn Kelly
payments usually hit your Bank of America EDD debit card or direct deposit within 3-5 business days after certifying if everything is clean on your claim

I'm going to be real with you - the process sounds simple but there are SO many ways it can get complicated. My first claim got sent to adjudication because my employer contested it. Adjudication means California EDD has to investigate before deciding whether you qualify. It can take weeks or even months sometimes and you don't get paid during that time. If it happens to you, do NOT just wait around hoping it resolves itself. Call EDD, respond to any notices immediately, and document everything.
0 coins
Joy Olmedo
Authorthat sounds really scary. What would cause my employer to contest it?
0 coins
Muhammad Hobbs
Employers sometimes contest layoffs by claiming you were fired for cause or that you quit voluntarily - both of which can disqualify you from UI. If you were genuinely laid off and have any documentation like a layoff letter that helps a lot in adjudication
0 coins
Jenna Sloan
Exactly right. A layoff for lack of work is the strongest position to be in for an unemployment claim. If your employer tries to reclassify it, you have the right to appeal any denial and present your side of the story at a hearing.

Raul Neal
Also just to add - when it asks you why you left your job be really careful about the wording. 'Laid off' and 'lack of work' are the magic words. Don't say anything that sounds like you might have had a choice in leaving or that there were any performance issues. I learned this the hard way when I described my separation as 'mutual agreement' and it triggered a whole adjudication investigation.

Joy Olmedo
AuthorNoted!! I'll make sure to say exactly that
0 coins
Raul Neal
Also if your employer gave you any paperwork about the layoff - like a separation notice or anything in writing - that's gold. Keep it. You may need to submit it if anything gets questioned

Kiara Greene
this is real advice. the initial claim form wording matters more than people think

one more thing nobody mentioned - make sure the email address and phone number you put on your EDD account are ones you actually check. California EDD sends important notices electronically and if you miss them you can get disqualified or your claim can lapse. I missed an important notice that went to an old email and my claim got denied while I wasn't watching
0 coins
Joy Olmedo
Authoroh wow ok. I'll double check my contact info for sure
0 coins
Sasha Reese
also check your spam folder religiously. EDD emails sometimes get filtered as spam and if you miss a response deadline you're in trouble
0 coins
Paloma Clark
And set up text notifications in your UI Online account if that's an option - way harder to miss a text than an email buried in your inbox

Heather Tyson
Coming back to add - when I first filed I also had trouble just understanding what was happening with my claim status in UI Online. The system shows statuses like 'pending,' 'in progress,' 'conditional payment' and none of them are explained well on the site. If you're ever confused about what a status means and can't find answers online, that's honestly when calling EDD becomes necessary. And as I mentioned earlier Claimyr at claimyr.com made that actually possible for me - the regular EDD phone lines are genuinely brutal to get through.

Christian Burns
the claim status descriptions on UI Online are genuinely the worst. I still don't fully understand what 'conditional payment' means after two claims
0 coins
Jenna Sloan
Conditional payment usually means EDD has issued a payment but there's still a pending issue on the account that might require repayment later. It's not ideal but it means money is moving at least.

Authorall of this is making me realize how complicated this is going to be but also I feel way better now knowing what to expect

just gonna say the EDD website itself has a page called 'Unemployment Insurance: A Guide for Claimants' that's actually pretty good for first timers. It walks through the whole process step by step. I found it more useful than trying to figure things out from the main navigation which is honestly a mess

Joy Olmedo
AuthorI'll look for that! Was it easy to find?

just google 'EDD claimant guide' and it should come up as one of the first results. Easier than navigating the site directly

To give you a complete picture of the timeline as a new filer: Day 1 you file your initial claim online. Within about 3 weeks you'll receive a Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award (or a denial) by mail. If approved it tells you your weekly benefit amount and your claim period. Meanwhile you should start certifying for weeks immediately - your first certification period opens the Sunday after your waiting week ends. Payments for certified weeks come within a few business days. Total time from filing to first payment is usually 3-5 weeks if everything goes smoothly.

Author3-5 weeks is a long time when youre already behind on rent :

I know, it's rough. Some banks and credit unions have hardship programs if you're tight. And if you qualify for CalFresh (food assistance) that application is separate from EDD and can be processed faster

also some utility companies have deferral programs for people in job loss situations. worth calling them proactively before you fall behind rather than after

Something that trips up a lot of food service workers specifically - if you pick up any shifts during your unemployment period you HAVE to report those earnings when you certify that week. You don't necessarily lose all your benefits, California EDD uses a partial benefit formula, but you must report it. Hiding income is considered fraud and EDD does catch it through wage cross-matching with employers. Not worth the risk and honestly the partial benefit calculation usually means you still get something even if you work a few hours.
0 coins
Joy Olmedo
Authorgood to know - I might pick up occasional shifts while I job search. How does the partial benefit thing work?
0 coins
Evelyn Kelly
EDD subtracts 25% of your weekly benefit amount from whatever you earned that week, then the rest of your earnings reduce your benefit dollar for dollar. So you keep the first 25% of your benefit amount basically as a buffer before earnings start cutting into your payment. It's a bit confusing but the weekly cert form walks you through it
0 coins
Raul Neal
the partial benefit calculation confused me for months. I just always reported what I earned and let EDD do the math - that's the safest approach

Kiara Greene
anyone else notice how different the experience is depending on what EDD office handles your claim? like I swear some claims sail through and others get stuck in adjudication for no apparent reason even with identical situations. my friend and I were laid off from the same company same day and her claim took 2 weeks mine took 8 weeks
0 coins
Muhammad Hobbs
it's honestly random and frustrating. the system has no real transparency about why some claims trigger manual review
0 coins
Kiara Greene
exactly. and there's no way to escalate or prioritize from what I can tell. you just wait

That's actually another situation where having a way to reach a live EDD agent makes a huge difference. Being able to ask directly why your claim is delayed versus just staring at a pending status for weeks. The Claimyr service I mentioned earlier (claimyr.com) was how I finally got answers during a similar delay - the demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 shows what using it is actually like

UPDATE: I actually filed my initial claim today! It took about 45 minutes to complete. The site was confusing in some parts but I got through it. It says my claim is being processed and I should hear back within 3 weeks. I also registered for CalJOBS like people said. Thank you everyone seriously this thread helped so much - I felt way less alone going through it knowing other people dealt with the same confusion

Great news! Now the waiting game begins. Set a reminder to start your weekly certifications - your first certification period should open this coming Sunday if you filed today

Good luck! Keep an eye on your email and UI Online account for any notices. And remember if anything weird shows up on your claim status that you don't understand, don't panic - just try to get someone at EDD on the phone and get clarification before your deadline to respond passes

For anyone finding this thread later with the same question - the absolute fastest way to start getting California unemployment benefits after a layoff is: 1) file your UI claim at edd.ca.gov immediately, don't wait even a day since the waiting week starts from your filing date not your last day of work, 2) register for CalJOBS right away, 3) start documenting your 3 weekly job search activities from day one, 4) certify every week without skipping. If you do those four things consistently and your separation was a genuine layoff you should be in good shape.

Also worth adding - file even if you're not sure you qualify. Let EDD make the determination. A lot of people don't file because they assume they won't qualify and miss out on benefits they were entitled to
0 coins
Muhammad Hobbs
Last thing I'll add because I went through a rough stretch with my claim - if you DO get denied for any reason you have 30 days from the date on the denial notice to file an appeal. Do not miss that window. The appeals process through California EDD is actually fairly claimant-friendly if you have documentation of a genuine layoff. I appealed my first denial and won, and ended up getting all my back pay for the weeks I'd been denied during the investigation.

Joy Olmedo
AuthorGood to know there's a recourse if something goes wrong. Really hoping I don't need it though

Muhammad Hobbs
Most straightforward layoff claims don't end up needing an appeal. But just knowing it exists gives you some peace of mind
0 coins
Jenna Sloan
The appeal hearing is done by phone with an Administrative Law Judge from California's Office of Appeals. You present your case, your employer can present theirs, and the judge decides. It sounds intimidating but for a clear-cut layoff situation you don't need a lawyer - just your documentation and a clear account of what happened
