Where do I go to apply for unemployment in California EDD?
Ok so I just got laid off last Friday and I have no idea where to even start. My manager told me I could apply for unemployment but didn't explain anything beyond that. I've been googling for like an hour and I'm seeing a bunch of different websites and I'm not sure which one is actually the official California EDD site to file my claim. Do I apply online or do I have to go somewhere in person? Is there a specific office I need to visit? I work in retail and this is the first time I've ever been laid off so I genuinely have no clue how any of this works. Where do I even go to apply for unemployment benefits?

The official place to apply for unemployment in California is through the California EDD website. You want to go to edd.ca.gov and look for the UI Online option - that's where you actually file your initial claim. You don't need to go anywhere in person, the whole application is done online through UI Online. Just make sure you're on the actual .ca.gov domain so you know it's the real California EDD site and not some third party thing. When you get there you'll create a myEDD account first and then you can file your Unemployment Insurance claim from there.

AuthorThank you! So I don't need to physically go to an EDD office at all? I can do everything from my computer?

Correct, almost everything is handled online or by phone. The California EDD offices don't really take walk-ins for new claims anyway. UI Online is where you'll file your initial claim, certify for benefits each week, and check your claim status. Only in rare situations would you need to visit an office in person.

yeah edd.ca.gov is the right one, i made the mistake of clicking some random site that looked official and it was trying to charge me to file lol. always check for the .ca.gov at the end

First thing you need to know - apply as soon as possible. There's a waiting period built into the California EDD process and the clock doesn't start until you actually file your claim. Every day you wait is potentially a day you won't get paid for. Go to edd.ca.gov, set up your myEDD account, and start the Unemployment Insurance application. You'll need your last employer's info, your work history for the past 18 months, and your bank account info if you want direct deposit instead of the EDD debit card.

AuthorWait there's a waiting period? How long is it?

Derek Olson
California has a one-week unpaid waiting period - it's basically the first week of your claim that you won't receive payment for. It's just one week though and it applies to almost everyone. After that your weekly certifications should result in payments as long as your claim gets approved.

The waiting week thing trips so many people up. You certify for it but you just don't get paid for that week. Important to know going in so you don't panic thinking something is wrong with your claim.

I just went through this whole process about two months ago and honestly applying online at edd.ca.gov was pretty straightforward. The part that got confusing for me was after I applied and my claim went into adjudication. I was trying to call California EDD to figure out what was happening and could NOT get through to anyone for weeks. If you hit that wall, I ended up using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that basically gets you connected to an actual EDD agent without you having to redial for hours. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - genuinely wish I had known about it earlier in the process.

The calling situation with EDD is really bad. I've spent entire mornings just hitting redial. Bookmarking that Claimyr link just in case.

adjudication scared me so much when my claim went into it, nobody tells you what it means. basically it means they're reviewing your claim before approving it. can take a few weeks unfortunately

Here's a quick rundown of what to have ready when you apply on UI Online at edd.ca.gov: - Your Social Security number - Contact info for your last employer (company name, address, phone) - The date you were laid off or last day worked - Reason for separation (layoff, quit, fired etc) - Work history from roughly the last 18 months - Banking info for direct deposit OR you can use the EDD debit card they mail you The application itself takes maybe 30-45 minutes if you have everything ready. Being laid off qualifies you to apply - the key thing California EDD looks at is that you lost your job through no fault of your own.

AuthorThis is super helpful, I'm going to get all this together before I start the application. Does it matter how long I worked at my last job?
0 coins
Danielle Mays
Yes it does matter - California EDD calculates your benefit amount based on your earnings during a specific 12-month base period. Generally speaking you need to have earned enough wages during that period to qualify. Most people who worked full time for at least a few months will meet the earnings requirement but if you only worked for a few weeks it could be tighter.

also make sure you apply even if youre not 100% sure you qualify. let edd make that determination. i talked myself out of applying thinking id get denied and turns out i would have qualified no problem

just to add - after you apply and get approved you have to certify every two weeks (they call it a biweekly certification) to keep receiving benefits. you basically confirm you were available to work, looked for jobs, and report any earnings. missing a certification can pause your payments so set a reminder once you get going
0 coins
Arnav Bengali
Authoroh wow I didn't know that, so it's not just a one time application thing. you have to keep doing stuff regularly

Rachel Tao
yeah the weekly certifications are how edd knows youre still unemployed and eligible. its not hard just gotta remember to do it. they send reminders through your myedd account
0 coins
Sayid Hassan
Technically it's biweekly certifications now - you certify every two weeks covering the previous two-week period. Just want to make sure the info is accurate. Some people get confused thinking it's literally every single week.

THE CALIFORNIA EDD PHONE SYSTEM IS A NIGHTMARE I just have to say this. I applied online fine but then had a question about my claim and calling them is absolutely impossible. Been trying for 3 days straight and either get a busy signal, get put on hold for 2 hours and then disconnected, or the automated system just hangs up on me. HOW is this the system in 2025

You're not alone, the EDD phone lines have been overwhelmed for years. It's genuinely one of the most frustrating parts of dealing with unemployment in California.

This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier in this thread - claimyr.com is specifically for this problem. They navigate the EDD phone system and call you when they have an agent on the line. Saved me so much stress when I was dealing with my claim issues. The demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 explains it better than I can

One thing that confuses a lot of first-time claimants - after you submit your application on UI Online, you won't get an instant approval. California EDD will mail you a Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award if approved, which takes a week or two. In the meantime your claim status online might just say 'pending' which feels scary but is normal. Keep checking your myEDD messages because that's how EDD communicates with you about any issues or info they need.

AuthorSo I should just wait and keep checking my account? Is there anything I should be doing in that waiting period?
0 coins
Derek Olson
Yes - start your job search immediately and keep a log of the employers you contact. California EDD requires you to search for work as a condition of receiving benefits. They can ask you to show your job search records at any time. Also make sure your contact info in myEDD is current in case they need to reach you.

Jabari-Jo
the job search requirement is 3 contacts per week in california. write them all down with dates and contact info. they dont check every week but if you get audited and dont have records it can cause problems

I remember being exactly where you are like 8 months ago, totally lost and overwhelmed. I'll just say - it gets less confusing once you're actually in the system. The edd.ca.gov website has a lot of info once you start poking around. One thing I wish someone told me: write down or screenshot your confirmation number after you apply. Keep records of literally everything you submit to California EDD.

quick question im in a similar situation - if I quit my job can i still apply? or is it only for people who got laid off
0 coins
Sayid Hassan
If you quit voluntarily you generally don't qualify for California EDD unemployment benefits unless you quit for 'good cause' - meaning there was a compelling work-related reason like unsafe conditions, significant change in your duties, or something similar. Just quitting because you wanted to is typically a disqualification. Layoffs and being fired (in some cases) do qualify.
0 coins
Kristin Frank
ugh ok so my situation is complicated because i quit but only because my boss was making my working conditions unbearable. does that count as good cause
0 coins
Danielle Mays
That could potentially qualify as good cause depending on the specifics. You'd need to apply and let California EDD make the determination. Document everything about why you left - communications, incidents, anything that supports your reason for quitting. EDD will investigate and make a ruling.

something nobody mentioned yet - you can also apply by phone if the online system isn't working for you. the california edd claims line is 1-800-300-5616. honestly though ui online at edd.ca.gov is much faster and easier than trying to get through on the phone to file. but it's an option

Arnav Bengali
AuthorGood to know there's a backup option. The online application seems pretty manageable based on what everyone's saying so I'll try that first

ha good luck getting through on that number to actually file. the phone lines are insane. online is definitely the way to go for the initial application

Applied online last week and it was pretty easy actually! Took me about 40 minutes. Just make sure your employer information is accurate because they verify with your former employer as part of the process. My former employer responded quickly and my claim moved along without going into adjudication which I've heard can be rough
0 coins
Arnav Bengali
AuthorThat's encouraging to hear! I'm hoping mine goes smoothly too. What do you mean they verify with your employer?
0 coins
Micah Trail
California EDD contacts your former employer to verify the reason for your separation and your earnings. If your employer contests anything - like says you quit when you were actually laid off - your claim can go into adjudication while they sort it out. As long as your former employer confirms the layoff you should be fine.
0 coins
Derek Olson
This is an important point. If there's any dispute between you and your employer about the reason for separation, expect adjudication. It doesn't mean you'll be denied, just that EDD needs to investigate further before making a determination.

wait i'm confused about something - my friend told me I need to register with CalJOBS to get unemployment. is that true or is she making stuff up lol
0 coins
Danielle Mays
Your friend is partially right. You do need to register with CalJOBS (California's job search database) as part of your unemployment requirements - it's tied to the job search requirements for collecting UI benefits. But it doesn't happen before you apply, you do it as part of the ongoing requirements after your claim is established. Don't let it stop you from applying at edd.ca.gov right away.
0 coins
Nia Watson
oh ok that makes more sense. I was thinking it was like a prerequisite to even filing which seemed weird
0 coins
Jabari-Jo
CalJOBS registration usually gets prompted during or shortly after your initial claim. Its basically just creating a job seeker profile. Dont stress about it, edd will tell you when you need to do it

Circling back since this thread has been helpful for me too - one thing that happens to a lot of people after they apply is their claim gets flagged for ID verification through ID.me. California EDD uses ID.me to verify your identity and if you get a notice about it you need to complete that ASAP or your payments get held up. Check your myEDD inbox regularly after you apply.
0 coins
Arnav Bengali
AuthorOh interesting, what is ID.me exactly? Is that another separate account I need to make?
0 coins
Roger Romero
Yes unfortunately it's another account/service. ID.me is an identity verification service California EDD uses. You'll upload photos of your ID and potentially do a video selfie verification. It sounds more complicated than it is but definitely do it quickly if you get that notice - delays on the ID.me side can hold your benefits for weeks.

I got stuck on the ID.me thing for like 3 weeks because I missed the notice in my myEDD messages. Just keep checking that inbox!!

UPDATE for anyone following this - I tried Claimyr that was mentioned earlier in this thread (claimyr.com) and honestly it worked. Got connected to an actual California EDD agent within a reasonable amount of time instead of spending another day redialing. One more thing OP - make sure you understand the base period for calculating your benefit amount. California EDD looks at your earnings during a specific 12-month window (usually 5-17 months before your claim date, not the most recent quarter) to determine what you'll receive weekly. The max weekly benefit in California right now is around $450. Your actual amount depends on your earnings in that base period.
0 coins
Arnav Bengali
AuthorHmm ok so the amount I get per week depends on what I was earning? Is there a calculator somewhere?
0 coins
Jabari-Jo
Yes! California EDD has a UI benefit calculator on their website. Just google 'California EDD UI benefit calculator' and you'll find it. Plug in your quarterly earnings and it gives you an estimate. Keep in mind it's an estimate until EDD officially calculates it.
0 coins
Danielle Mays
Also just to clarify - the $450 figure changes periodically. Always check the current California EDD benefit tables for accurate numbers. The maximum gets adjusted from time to time.

I went through this exact situation in January and the whole process from applying to getting my first payment took about 3 weeks. Just to set expectations. Apply ASAP, make sure your myEDD contact info is right, respond to any EDD requests immediately, do your certifications on time, and you should be okay. It feels overwhelming at first but once you're in the routine it's manageable.

Author3 weeks from applying to first payment is actually better than I was expecting honestly. Thank you for sharing that timeline.

Yeah mine was pretty smooth because I wasn't laid off for any complicated reason and my employer didn't contest anything. If your claim goes into adjudication it can definitely take longer - I've seen people in this forum say 6-8 weeks in those situations.

3 weeks is a good timeline for a clean claim. Mine took about that too. Just don't miss any certifications along the way or it resets things
