No work next week - What to do about unemployment?
Hey everyone, I just found out I won't have any work next week. I'm kinda freaking out about what to do next. Has anyone been through this before? What should I do about unemployment? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Ugh, that sucks man. I've been there before. First thing you should do is file for unemployment ASAP. Don't wait! The sooner you file, the sooner you might get benefits. Also, start looking for new work right away. Update your resume and hit up some job boards. Good luck!

•Thanks for the advice! How long does it usually take to hear back after filing for unemployment?

•It can vary, but in my experience, it took about 2-3 weeks to get approved. Just make sure you fill out everything correctly to avoid delays. And don't forget to certify for benefits every week once you're approved!

•2-3 weeks? You got lucky! It took me over a month to get my first payment. The system is so backed up rn 😩

I found a method to get someone on the phone at the unemployment office. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

•Sounds kinda sketchy. Is it legit? Has anyone else tried this?

•I get why you'd be skeptical, but it's totally legit. I was desperate after trying to get through for weeks and it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time.

•I've used it too. It's a lifesaver when you need to talk to someone ASAP. Worth the $20 imo

Make sure you document EVERYTHING. Keep a record of your last day worked, reason for separation, and any communication with your employer. You'll need all this info when you file for unemployment. Also, check if you're eligible for any other assistance programs in your area. Some places have rent relief or food banks that can help tide you over.

Here's a comprehensive guide on what to do when you suddenly lose your job: 1. File for unemployment immediately 2. Review your finances and create a bare-bones budget 3. Contact your creditors to explain your situation and ask about hardship programs 4. Look into health insurance options (COBRA or marketplace plans) 5. Update your resume and LinkedIn profile 6. Reach out to your network for job leads 7. Consider temporary or gig work to bridge the gap 8. Take care of your mental health - job loss is stressful! 9. Research job retraining programs in your area 10. Don't be afraid to ask for help from family, friends, or local community organizations Remember, this is just a temporary setback. Stay positive and keep pushing forward!

•Wow, thank you so much for this detailed list! It's really helpful to have everything laid out like this. I'll definitely be referring back to this as I navigate the next few weeks.

Have you tried calling your employer to see if there's any possibility of picking up shifts in other departments or locations? Sometimes there are opportunities you might not know about unless you ask.

•That's a great idea, I hadn't thought of that. I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if there's anything available. Thanks!

Ugh, the unemployment system is such a joke. I've been trying to get through for MONTHS. Good luck, OP. You're gonna need it 🙄

•Ikr? It's like they purposely make it difficult to discourage people from claiming benefits. The whole system needs an overhaul.

•Preach! 👏 I swear, sometimes I think carrier pigeons would be more efficient than their stupid phone system.

Hey, just wanted to say hang in there. I lost my job last year and it was tough, but things do get better. Use this time to maybe learn some new skills or explore different career paths. You never know what opportunities might come up!

PSA: Be careful about what info you share online when discussing unemployment. Scammers are everywhere looking to take advantage of people in vulnerable situations. Never give out your SSN or bank info to anyone claiming to be from the unemployment office!

•Thanks for the warning! I'll definitely be careful about what I share. Are there any red flags I should watch out for?

•Big red flags: anyone asking for payment to 'process' your claim, unsolicited calls/emails claiming to be from unemployment, and requests for personal info through social media. Always verify through official channels!
