Need EDD phone number to file a claim - which one actually works?
I'm trying to find the correct EDD phone number to file a claim but getting conflicting info online. Some sites say 800-300-5616, others mention 833-978-0953. I need to file my initial unemployment claim but don't want to waste time calling the wrong number. Has anyone successfully filed a new claim by phone recently? What number did you use and did you actually get through to someone?

Both numbers are the same line actually. I used 800-300-5616 last month and got through after about 60 attempts. The menu is 1-wait about 70 seconds-1-1-***. Took me 3 hours of redialing but I filed my claim.

•60 attempts?! That's insane. Did you call at a specific time or just keep trying throughout the day?

•Started at 8am sharp and didn't stop until I got through around 11:30am. Avoid calling between noon and 1:30 - they all take lunch.

I've been trying for 2 weeks to file my claim. Called over 200 times and only got on hold twice - both times the call dropped after 90 minutes. This is ridiculous for something as basic as filing a claim.

•Same here. I've wasted entire days just trying to get past the busy signal. There has to be a better way.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? My coworker used it last week and got through in 20 minutes. It's like $20 but worth it if you value your time.

•Never heard of that. Is it legit? I'm getting desperate enough to try anything at this point.

Pro tip: Don't wait for the menu prompts to finish. Press 1 as soon as you hear the first beep, wait exactly 70 seconds, then press 1-1-***. Saves about 30 seconds per call which adds up fast when you're redialing 50+ times.

•This actually works! Just tried it and shaved off so much time. Still didn't get through but at least I'm failing faster lol

•Exactly - efficiency matters when you're playing the numbers game. Wednesday afternoons seem to be the sweet spot in my experience.

FYI the online filing system is completely down right now so phone is the only option. I've been tracking my attempts - Monday mornings are the worst, Friday afternoons are pointless. Thursday around 2pm has been my best luck.

•Good to know about the online system. I was wondering why it kept erroring out. How long have you been tracking your calls?

•About 3 weeks now. I have a spreadsheet with times, success rates, everything. I'm that desperate. Best day so far was Wednesday at 2:30pm - got through on attempt #34.

Just successfully filed my claim yesterday using 800-300-5616. Called at 1:45pm, got through on my 41st attempt, held for 1 hour 20 minutes. The rep was super helpful once I finally reached them. Don't give up!

•41 attempts in one session? How do you even keep track? My phone keeps overheating after 20 calls.

•I use a tally counter app and take 5 minute breaks every 15 calls. Also have my phone plugged in the whole time. It's become a science lol

•The dedication is real. Glad you finally got through! Gives me hope that it's actually possible.

STOP CALLING DURING LUNCH! I see people complaining about no answers between 12-1:30pm. That's when the entire call center is at lunch. Save yourself the frustration and call before noon or after 1:30pm.

•This needs to be pinned at the top. I wasted so many attempts during lunch hour before figuring this out.

•Wait, the ENTIRE call center takes lunch at the same time? That's the most government thing I've ever heard.

Been calling for 10 days straight. My phone bill is going to be insane from all these attempts. Is there really no other way to file a claim right now?

•Use Claimyr.com - it calls for you and forwards when an agent picks up. I paid $19 and got connected in 15 minutes yesterday. Best money I ever spent.

•Is that actually safe? Giving my info to a third party service seems sketchy.

•They don't ask for personal info, just your phone number for the callback. Check their reviews - thousands of people have used it. There's even a YouTube demo.

I keep seeing people mention different numbers. Can someone confirm: 800-300-5616 and 833-978-0953 are definitely the same line? I don't want to split my attempts between two numbers if they're identical.

•Yes, 100% the same line. I've tested both extensively. Stick with whichever one you can dial faster.

•Confirmed. I accidentally called both thinking they were different and got the exact same hold music. Don't waste time switching between them.

Week 3 of trying to file my claim. I've called 847 times total (yes I'm counting). Got on hold 4 times, call dropped every single time after 1+ hours. I'm losing my mind.

•847 times?! That's dedication but also insane. Have you considered the callback services people are mentioning?

•I'm skeptical of paying for something that should be free. But honestly at this point I'm running out of options.

•I was skeptical too but tried Claimyr after 2 weeks of failure. Got through same day. The $20 was nothing compared to the time I saved.

PSA: Don't bother calling after 4pm on any day. They seem to stop taking new calls even though they're officially open until 5pm. Learned this the hard way after wasting 50+ attempts in that window.

•This matches my data exactly. Success rate drops to basically zero after 4pm. They're probably clearing the queue for end of day.

•Makes sense. Government workers checking out early, what else is new? Thanks for the heads up.

Finally got through this morning! 800-300-5616, called at 8:02am, attempt #67, held for 2 hours 10 minutes. Filed my claim successfully. For anyone still trying - don't give up, it IS possible.

•67 attempts in one morning?! How is that even possible? That's like one attempt every 2 minutes.

•I had the menu pattern memorized and was redialing the second I heard 'too busy to take your call'. Became a machine.

•2 hours and 10 minutes on hold after 67 attempts. The dedication is incredible but also highlights how broken this system is.

Ignore anyone telling you about 'specialist lines' or secret numbers. Those don't exist anymore post-pandemic. There's only one unemployment line and we're all competing for the same agents.

•Thank you! I wasted 2 days trying different numbers I found online. Wish I'd seen this earlier.

•Yeah, all those 'insider tips' about different departments are outdated. It's just one big overloaded phone system now.

Started calling at 7:55am (5 minutes before they open), got the 'we're closed' message until exactly 8:00am, then immediately started getting busy signals. The volume is insane right when they open.

•I do the same thing! It's like a race. The second that clock hits 8:00am everyone starts dialing.

CosmicCommander
•Exactly. And then by 8:05am you're already behind hundreds of other callers. The early bird strategy is real.

Quick question - when you finally reach an agent to file a claim, do they handle everything over the phone or do you still need to submit documents separately? Trying to prepare for when I eventually get through.

Dylan Cooper
•They can file the basic claim over the phone but you'll need to upload documents to your online account later. Have your SSN, employer info, and last day worked ready.

•Good to know, thanks! At least I can get the ball rolling with just the phone call.

Been using Claimyr for the past week after manual calling failed. Got through 3 times in 5 days with an average wait of 25 minutes. Honestly the best investment I've made. Here's their demo video if anyone's curious: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10

•3 times in 5 days?! I haven't gotten through once in 3 weeks of manual calling. That's a crazy difference.

•Right? It's like night and day. The robots are just better at this repetitive task than humans. Wish I'd found it sooner.

•Just watched the demo video. Pretty impressive. Might have to bite the bullet and try this.
