How to set up direct deposit for California EDD unemployment benefits
I just got approved for unemployment last week and I'm trying to figure out how to set up direct deposit for my benefits. I've been poking around in my UI Online account and I see options for payment method but honestly I'm confused about whether I need to do this through the Bank of America EDD debit card portal or somewhere else entirely. My first weekly certification is due soon and I really don't want my payments delayed because I set something up wrong. I'm currently set to receive the EDD debit card by default but I'd much rather have the money deposited straight into my checking account. Has anyone done this recently? Is there a specific section in myEDD or UI Online where I change payment preferences? Do I need to wait until after I receive the debit card first before switching? Any help would be seriously appreciated because the EDD website is not making this easy to navigate.

Yes you can absolutely set this up through your UI Online account. Log in and go to the 'Payment Preference' section — it's listed under your profile or account settings depending on which version of the interface you're seeing. You'll need your bank's routing number and your checking or savings account number ready. It usually takes about 3-5 business days to process and verify before payments start going directly to your bank account instead of the debit card.

AuthorThank you! I found the Payment Preference section. It's asking me to enter routing and account number and then says there's a verification step. Does the verification happen automatically or do I need to do something else?

Emma Johnson
It's mostly automatic — EDD does a small test deposit or verification check on the backend. Just make sure the account info is exactly right and you should be fine. Double check your routing number especially if you use a credit union, sometimes those are different from what's printed on checks.

also make sure you keep filing your weekly certifications on time even while the payment method is being updated, the claims dont pause just because you switched payment preferences

went through this exact process about two months ago. the key thing nobody tells you is that if you entered your bank info and it shows 'pending verification' it can take up to 3 business days before it activates. during that window your payment might still go to the debit card one more time before the direct deposit kicks in. dont freak out if that happens, its totally normal

AuthorOh good to know! So I might get one payment on the debit card and then the rest go to direct deposit? That makes sense I guess.

exactly. and the debit card doesn't expire right away so you can still access any funds on it even after switching to direct deposit

same happened to me, got one more debit card payment then all subsequent ones went to my bank. the transition was smooth after that

I want to add some important info here for anyone setting up direct deposit for unemployment through California EDD. Here's the step-by-step breakdown: 1. Log in to UI Online at https://myedd.edd.ca.gov 2. Click on your name/profile in the top right 3. Select 'Payment Preference' 4. Choose 'Direct Deposit' and enter your bank routing and account number 5. Confirm and submit A few things to watch out for: EDD only accepts US-based bank accounts, so no international banks. Also, the account must be in your name — joint accounts are generally fine as long as your name is on them. And make sure you're entering a checking or savings account number, not your debit card number. If you run into any issues or the system gives you an error when trying to save your banking info, that sometimes means there's a hold or issue on your claim that needs to be resolved first by speaking with an EDD representative.

AuthorThis is exactly what I needed, thank you so much! I'm going to log in right now and follow these steps.

can you do this from the mobile app too or only desktop

Omar Farouk
I'd recommend doing it from a desktop browser honestly. The UI Online interface works on mobile but the account settings section can be buggy on phones. Use a computer if you can for this particular task.

+1 to doing it on desktop, tried on my phone and it kept timing out before I could save

Okay so I actually had a nightmare experience trying to do this. I entered my bank info correctly multiple times and kept getting a generic error. Called EDD but could NOT get through to anyone for like two weeks straight. Finally someone in another forum recommended Claimyr — it's a service that helps you actually reach a live EDD agent without sitting on hold forever. I used it and got connected within like an hour. The agent told me there was a flag on my account preventing the direct deposit update from saving. She cleared it and I was able to set up direct deposit the same day. If you hit errors the site won't explain, check out claimyr.com — they also have a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 so you can see how it works before trying it.

Leila Haddad
AuthorOh no, I hope I don't run into that error. Good to know Claimyr exists in case I can't get through to EDD. Did it take long after the agent cleared the flag?

Anastasia Kuznetsov
No, literally same day. She cleared it, I went back into UI Online while still on the phone with her, entered my info again and it went through no problem. Huge relief after two weeks of trying to call.

I've heard of Claimyr before but was skeptical. But if there's an account issue you literally can NOT fix without talking to a human so yeah that makes sense to use something like that

Anastasia Kuznetsov
yeah the DIY approach is fine when everything works normally but when you hit an error code or a block on your account, you need a real person and EDD is nearly impossible to reach on your own

wait do you HAVE to switch to direct deposit or can you just use the debit card? asking because I just got approved and I haven't done anything yet
0 coins
Emma Johnson
You don't have to switch — the EDD debit card is the default and works fine. Direct deposit is just an option if you prefer payments going straight to your bank. Some people find the debit card annoying because of ATM fees or transfer limits, so they prefer direct deposit.

Zara Khan
ohh okay I didn't realize it was optional. I'll probably just keep the debit card then for now

I switched to direct deposit after getting hit with a $3 fee to transfer money from the debit card to my bank. Over a few months that adds up. Worth switching imo

One thing I'd add — when you're in the Payment Preference section, EDD will show you a confirmation screen before finalizing. READ IT carefully. I accidentally entered one digit wrong in my account number and didn't catch it on the confirmation screen. My payment bounced back and it took almost two weeks to get it sorted out. EDD had to manually reissue to the debit card while the corrected direct deposit got set up. Annoying but not the end of the world.

Leila Haddad
AuthorYikes, I'll be really careful to double-check. Is there any way to verify the numbers after you've submitted them?
0 coins
Mateo Gonzalez
Yes — after you save the banking info you can go back into Payment Preference and it'll show the last 4 digits of your account number. Compare that against your actual account to confirm it saved correctly.

Good tip. I also take a screenshot of the confirmation page every time I change anything in UI Online just so I have a record

does anyone know if setting up direct deposit affects how fast you get paid? like does EDD process direct deposit payments faster than the debit card
0 coins
Omar Farouk
Generally speaking the timing is about the same — EDD processes payments after you certify and the funds are released on a schedule regardless of payment method. Direct deposit might show up in your bank account slightly faster than waiting for the debit card to be loaded depending on your bank's processing time, but we're talking maybe a difference of one business day at most.
0 coins
Diego Fernández
okay that's good to know, I thought direct deposit might be noticeably faster but sounds like not really

my experience matches that, the day EDD releases payment it shows in my bank account by the next morning usually

I'm kind of confused about something — when it says 'routing number' does it mean the bank routing number or the routing number on the EDD debit card? I don't have a separate bank account
0 coins
Emma Johnson
It means your bank's routing number — the 9-digit number at the bottom left of a personal check, or you can find it on your bank's website or app. If you don't have a separate bank account, you'd just keep the EDD debit card as your payment method. You can't enter the debit card itself as a direct deposit destination.

Nia Williams
ohhh okay that makes so much more sense thank you. I was very confused lol

yeah the terminology is confusing at first. once you've been through it a couple times it makes more sense

Something worth mentioning — if you're getting your first payment and haven't received the debit card in the mail yet, I'd still recommend setting up direct deposit ASAP because it can take 7-10 days for the physical card to arrive. If your direct deposit gets set up and verified before your first payment processes, you'll get it in your bank without ever needing the card. The card will still come in the mail as a backup but you may never need to activate it.

Leila Haddad
AuthorThat's a really smart point, I'm going to try to get the direct deposit set up today then before my first certification is even due.
0 coins
MoonlightSonata
That's the move. Just make sure you don't delay your weekly certification waiting on anything related to payment setup — certify on time no matter what, and sort out the payment preference separately.

Mateo Gonzalez
Can confirm this approach works, I never even activated my debit card because direct deposit was already set up when my first payment came through

UGHHH why does the EDD website have to be so confusing. I've been going back and forth between UI Online and myEDD and I honestly can't find where the Payment Preference option even IS. It keeps taking me in circles
0 coins
Omar Farouk
So the EDD portal situation is a little confusing because myEDD is the login portal and UI Online is the actual claims interface you access after logging in. Once you're inside UI Online, look for 'Profile' at the top navigation — Payment Preference should be a subsection there. If you're not seeing it, sometimes it only appears after your claim is fully approved and active, not while it's still pending.

Sean Fitzgerald
omg I was looking in myEDD before logging all the way in. found it now, thank you!!

This confused me too at first. The EDD has too many different portals and systems that don't obviously connect to each other

I want to address a misconception I've seen floating around online — some people think you need to call EDD to set up direct deposit. That is NOT true for most people. The vast majority of claimants can set up and change their payment preference entirely online through UI Online without ever needing to speak to anyone. The only time you'd need to call is if you encounter an error or a block on your account specifically preventing the update from saving, which does happen but isn't the norm.
0 coins
Zara Khan
That's really reassuring to hear, I was worried I'd have to deal with the phone system just to update my payment info
0 coins
Luca Ricci
Nope — for a standard payment preference update it's entirely self-service. Just log in, navigate to the right section, enter your info, and confirm. That's it.

One more thing I'll mention since nobody has brought it up — if you have a payment currently in 'processing' status when you make the direct deposit switch, that in-progress payment might still route to your old method (debit card). The direct deposit change typically applies to the NEXT payment cycle after it's been verified. So you won't lose any money but don't be alarmed if one payment still hits the card after you switched.
0 coins
Leila Haddad
AuthorSeveral people have mentioned this now so I'm mentally prepared for it. Makes total sense that in-flight payments don't get re-routed.
0 coins
PixelPrincess
Exactly, it's just a timing thing not a mistake. Once the switch takes effect everything will consistently go to your bank from that point forward.

does direct deposit work the same if you're on a reduced claim like partial unemployment? asking because i still work part time and just certify for my partial benefits each week
0 coins
Omar Farouk
Yes, direct deposit works exactly the same regardless of whether you're receiving full unemployment benefits or a partial claim. The payment method is separate from how EDD calculates your weekly benefit amount. Just set it up the same way through Payment Preference and your partial benefit payments will go straight to your bank.
0 coins
Chloe Martin
great, that's what I figured but wanted to double check

Emma Johnson
Partial UI claims work just like regular claims for payment purposes — EDD processes the amount and sends it via whatever method you've chosen

Ravi Patel
I work in HR and help employees with unemployment questions sometimes. One thing I always tell people: when setting up direct deposit with EDD, use a primary checking or savings account that you check regularly. I've seen situations where someone used an old account they rarely checked, the payment went through fine but sat there unnoticed for weeks while the person thought they hadn't been paid. Sounds obvious but it happens more than you'd think.
0 coins
MoonlightSonata
Actually great advice. Also make sure the account you use is actually active and in good standing — an account that's technically open but has been dormant might reject ACH deposits.
0 coins
Ravi Patel
Yes exactly. ACH rejections are a pain to resolve with EDD because then the payment bounces back and they have to reissue it which can take several business days.
0 coins
Diego Fernández
I didn't know about ACH rejections being a thing with EDD, good to know

quick question — if I switch to direct deposit now, do I need to re-enter my banking information every time I re-open a claim, or does it stay saved in the system?
0 coins
Astrid Bergström
From my experience, the banking info stays saved in your UI Online account. If you file a new claim later, your payment preference and banking info should still be there. But I'd always recommend logging in and verifying it's still correct whenever you open a new claim just to be safe.

Aisha Mohammed
That's good to know, thanks. Makes sense that it would carry over.

Confirmed — your payment preference persists in the system. You generally don't need to re-enter banking info for subsequent claims unless your account information has changed.

I know this is slightly off topic but while we're talking about EDD payments — does anyone know if there's a way to see a history of all payments EDD has made to you? I'm trying to reconcile something from earlier this year
0 coins
Omar Farouk
Yes — in UI Online there's a 'Payments' section where you can see a full history of payments issued, including dates, amounts, and payment method. It's actually pretty detailed. You can use that to verify when payments were issued and to which method.

I tried to set up direct deposit yesterday and it keeps saying 'unable to process your request at this time, please try again later.' I've tried three times over two days and same message every time. This is SO frustrating

Anastasia Kuznetsov
That error usually means there's something on your account side that's blocking the update — it's not just a temporary website glitch. This is exactly the situation where you need to talk to an actual EDD rep to find out what the flag is. I had the same thing and used Claimyr to get through since EDD phone lines are basically impossible. They're at claimyr.com and have a walkthrough video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 — seriously saved me so much time.

I've been dreading having to call EDD. Does Claimyr actually work? I'm skeptical but also desperate at this point

I was skeptical too. But when you literally cannot fix the problem without a human and you can't reach a human, you need a different approach. It worked for me and I know others in similar situations have used it.

for what its worth I set mine up no problem in like 5 minutes, just logged in went to payment preference and filled in my bank info. maybe some accounts have issues but plenty of people have no trouble at all

AuthorThat's really encouraging to hear! I think if your account is clean with no flags it goes smoothly. Makes me feel better.

yeah I think the issues happen when theres something else going on with the claim. if everything is straightforward it really is quick

Agreed — when the account is in good standing the whole process is genuinely simple. The horror stories tend to come from accounts that have some underlying issue.

Does the account number I enter need to match the name exactly on file with EDD? Like if my legal name and my bank account name have a slight difference will that cause problems
0 coins
Omar Farouk
EDD doesn't do a name-match verification on the bank account number the way some systems do — they send the payment via ACH with your information and the bank receives it. The more important thing is that the account numbers are accurate. That said, it's always best practice to use an account that is clearly in your name to avoid any potential complications with your bank flagging an unexpected deposit.
0 coins
Andre Dupont
Okay that makes sense, I was worried a middle name difference or something would cause a rejection
0 coins
Ravi Patel
Minor name variations generally don't cause ACH payment issues. Account numbers are the critical piece.

Can I split my EDD unemployment payments between two bank accounts? Like half to savings and half to checking?
0 coins
Emma Johnson
No — EDD only allows you to designate a single bank account for direct deposit. You can't split payments between multiple accounts through their system. If you want to allocate funds between accounts after receiving them, you'd need to do that transfer yourself through your own bank.
0 coins
Zoe Papadakis
That's what I figured but worth asking. I'll just transfer a portion to savings manually after each payment.
0 coins
Astrid Bergström
Yeah this is a common thing people want to do but EDD's system just doesn't support it. Manual transfer is the workaround most people use.

I just want to share a positive update for anyone following this thread — I set up direct deposit for my California EDD unemployment benefits this morning following the steps in this thread and it went completely smoothly. Found Payment Preference in UI Online under my profile, entered my routing and account numbers, got a confirmation message, and the estimated activation is within 3 business days. Feeling much less stressed about my upcoming payments now. Thanks everyone!
