EDD Direct Deposit setup missing - can't find where to enter my bank info

I got approved for unemployment benefits last week after waiting forever for my claim to process. I heard EDD finally offers direct deposit instead of those annoying Money Network cards, but I can't figure out how to set it up! I've been poking around in UI Online for the past hour and don't see any option to enter my bank account info. I want to get this squared away BEFORE my first payment so I don't have to deal with the card at all. Has anyone successfully set up direct deposit with EDD? Where exactly is this option hiding? Do I need to call them to enable it?

The direct deposit option should be available in your UI Online account under 'Payment Preferences' or 'Payment Methods.' Log in to your UI Online account, go to the homepage, and look for a section about payment options. If you're not seeing it, make sure you're looking at the desktop version of the site - sometimes the mobile view hides certain features.

Thanks, but that's the issue - I don't have ANY payment preferences section showing up at all! I've checked both on my laptop and phone. Is it possible they haven't activated it for my account yet since I'm newly approved?

EDD has been ROLLING OUT the direct deposit option in PHASES and not everyone has it available yet!!!! My neighbor got it 2 months ago but my account STILL doesn't have the option. When I called they said I was "in a later phase" whatever that means. Just more government inefficiency making us wait. Can't even implement a basic banking feature properly. 🙄

You actually need to verify your identity through ID.me first before the direct deposit option shows up. I was confused about this too! Once you complete the ID verification, wait 24-48 hours, then log back in and the payment preferences section should appear. At least that's how it worked for me back in January.

Oh that might be it! I did the ID.me verification when I first applied, but maybe it didn't fully process? Is there a way to check if my ID verification is complete?

The direct deposit option is definitely available now but there are a few requirements before it shows up in your account: 1. Your claim must be fully approved (not just filed) 2. Your identity must be verified through ID.me 3. You need to have certified for at least one week 4. Sometimes you need to have received at least one payment on the Money Network card first It sounds like you might not have certified for any weeks yet, or perhaps your first payment hasn't processed. Once those steps are complete, you should see a "Payment Method" option under the "Payment Preferences" section when you log in.

This makes sense! I haven't certified for any weeks yet - my first certification period opens up this Sunday. Sounds like I need to wait until after I certify and possibly get my first payment before the direct deposit option will appear. Thanks for the detailed explanation!

I had this same issue last month!! For me the direct deposit section just randomly appeared after my first payment went to the card. Kind of annoying but at least you can switch it eventually

If you're in a hurry to get this resolved, I'd recommend using Claimyr to get through to an EDD representative. I was having the same issue with direct deposit not showing up, spent days trying to call with no luck. Used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes who fixed it right away - apparently there was a flag on my account that needed to be removed. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

Does that service actually work? I've been trying to call EDD for TWO WEEKS about incorrect payment amounts and either get disconnected or told "maximum callers reached" EVERY SINGLE TIME!

One more thing to note: When the direct deposit option does appear, make sure you have your bank account and routing numbers ready, along with a copy of a voided check or bank statement. EDD will require verification of the account details, and you'll need to confirm the amounts of two small test deposits they'll make to your account. The whole process takes about 3-5 business days from start to finish.

Thank you! I've got all my banking information ready to go. I'll wait until after my first certification this weekend and see if the option appears. If not, I might try calling them directly or use that Claimyr service someone mentioned.

Based on what everyone's saying, it sounds like you need to: 1) Complete ID verification, 2) Have an approved claim, 3) Certify for at least one week, and 4) Possibly receive your first payment on the card before the direct deposit option appears. The system isn't very intuitive, but once you get it set up, it works pretty well. I've been getting direct deposit for about 6 months now and it's much better than dealing with the card.

Thanks everyone for the helpful info! I'll certify this weekend and then wait for the direct deposit option to appear. Really appreciate all the guidance!

I went through this exact same frustration a few months ago! The direct deposit option won't show up until you've completed your first certification and EDD has processed at least one payment. It's really counterintuitive because you'd think they'd let you set it up beforehand, but that's just how their system works unfortunately. Once you certify this weekend and your payment gets approved, check back in your UI Online account in about 3-4 days - the "Payment Method" section should finally appear under your account settings. The good news is once it's set up, future payments go straight to your bank account within 1-2 business days instead of waiting for the card to arrive in the mail.

I just went through this same issue last month! The direct deposit option is tied to your certification schedule - it literally won't appear until after you've certified for your first week and EDD has processed that payment. It's frustrating because logically you'd want to set it up beforehand, but their system requires you to have at least one active payment cycle before unlocking the direct deposit feature. After you certify this Sunday, give it about 3-5 business days for the payment to process, then check your UI Online account again. You should see a "Payment Preferences" or "Payment Method" section appear in your account dashboard. Just make sure you have your bank routing and account numbers ready - they'll do micro deposits to verify your account which takes another 2-3 days to complete.

This is super helpful! I was getting so frustrated thinking there was something wrong with my account. It's good to know this is just how their system works - seems like everyone has to go through this same confusing process. I'll certify this Sunday and then wait for the payment to process before checking again. Thanks for the detailed timeline, it really helps set expectations!

I had the exact same problem when I first got approved! The direct deposit option is essentially "hidden" until you meet certain requirements. From my experience, you need to: 1) Have your claim fully approved (which you do), 2) Complete ID verification through ID.me, 3) Certify for at least one week, and 4) Have EDD process your first payment. The system won't show the "Payment Method" section until after your first certification is processed. I know it's backwards logic - you'd think they'd let you set it up right away - but that's just how EDD's system works. After you certify this weekend, wait about 3-5 business days for processing, then log back into UI Online and you should finally see the payment preferences option appear. Make sure to have your bank routing and account numbers ready because they'll need to verify your account with small test deposits.

This is exactly what I needed to hear! I was starting to think there was a glitch with my account or that I was missing something obvious. It's reassuring to know that this is just the standard process everyone goes through. I'll be patient and wait for the system to unlock the direct deposit option after I certify and get my first payment processed. Really appreciate you breaking down all the steps - it makes the whole process much clearer!

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! Just got approved for benefits this week and have been searching everywhere in UI Online for the direct deposit setup. It's so frustrating that they don't make this more obvious or let you set it up right when your claim gets approved. Based on what everyone is saying here, it sounds like I'll need to wait until after I certify for my first week before the option even appears. Has anyone had success calling EDD directly to get this set up early, or do we really have to wait for that first payment cycle? I'm hoping to avoid the Money Network card entirely if possible.

I'm in the exact same boat as you! Got approved this week and was going crazy looking for the direct deposit option. From everything I've read in this thread, it seems like calling EDD won't help - the system literally won't let them add the direct deposit option until after you've certified and had your first payment processed. It's such a backwards way to do things, but apparently that's just how their system is designed. Looks like we're both stuck getting that first payment on the Money Network card before we can switch over to direct deposit. At least now I know I'm not missing something obvious!

I had this exact same frustration when I first got approved! The direct deposit option is essentially locked until you complete your first certification cycle. Here's what worked for me: 1) Make sure your ID.me verification is 100% complete (you can check this in your account profile), 2) Certify for your first week this Sunday, 3) Wait 3-5 business days for EDD to process that payment, 4) Log back into UI Online and look for "Payment Method" or "Payment Preferences" - it should finally appear after your first payment processes. I know it's backwards that you can't set it up beforehand, but that's just how their system works. The good news is once you get it configured, direct deposit is much faster than waiting for the card! Pro tip: have your bank routing/account numbers and a voided check ready because they'll need to verify your account with micro deposits before fully activating it.
