How long for EDD to process DE2525XX extension form by mail in 2025?

My father's unemployment benefits are about to run out, so I helped him fill out and submit the DE2525XX extension request form. We mailed it directly to the EDD office about two weeks ago (March 3rd). The EDD rep we spoke with before submitting said they would mail a response, but we haven't received anything yet. I'm getting worried because my dad's last payment is scheduled for next week and rent is due on the 1st. Does anyone know how long these extension requests typically take when submitted by mail? Should I be calling them by now or is two weeks still within normal processing time? Also wondering if we should have submitted it online instead - didn't realize that might be an option until after we mailed it.

Mail is the worst way to submit ANYTHING to EDD!! It takes forever. When I did my extension back in January the mail took like 6 weeks to process. Should have done it online tbh

6 weeks?? Oh no. We can't wait that long. I didn't even see an online option for the extension form. Do you know where to find it on their website?

EDD mail processing is typically running 3-4 weeks right now for most forms, but the DE2525XX extension request specifically can take 4-6 weeks because it requires manual review by a claims specialist. The process involves verifying your father's eligibility for the extension program, reviewing his previous claim history, and ensuring he meets the requirements for additional benefits. For future reference, you could have submitted this using the "Contact EDD" function in your UI Online account, which typically gets faster attention. At this point though, I'd recommend waiting until you hit the 3-week mark and then calling to check on the status. Make sure your father continues to certify for benefits during this waiting period, even after his current claim balance shows zero.

Thank you for such detailed information! That's really helpful. I'll make sure he keeps certifying. If we don't hear anything by next week, we'll call EDD. I wish the rep had told us about the UI Online option when we spoke with them initially.

my cousin went thru this last month. he got nothing for like 5 weeks then suddenly got backpay for everything once they approved it. dont panic yet but ya thats just how edd works ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The problem is that calling EDD directly is a NIGHTMARE right now. I tried last week for my extension and couldn't get through after 43 attempts!! I was ready to throw my phone out the window. Finally tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) after someone on this forum recommended it. They got me connected to an actual EDD rep in about 20 minutes. The rep was able to check my extension form status right away and even expedited it. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Totally worth it because the rep I spoke with actually helped process my extension while I was on the phone with her. Saved me weeks of waiting for mail.

That sounds like exactly what we need! Getting an actual person on the phone who could check the status would be huge. I'll check out that link, thanks for sharing!

I thought claimyr was a scam?? Anyone else use this?

Claimyr is legit. Used it twice last year when my claim got stuck. Just be aware that even after you get through to EDD, there's no guarantee they'll expedite anything. Some reps are helpful, others just tell you to keep waiting.

I work with unemployment cases regularly, and I can tell you that mail processing times for the DE2525XX extension form currently average 28-35 days. This is unfortunately much longer than EDD representatives typically quote. Important points to know: 1. Your father should continue certifying for benefits every two weeks even after his claim balance reaches zero. This creates a continuous claim record. 2. Extensions are approved retroactively, so if approved, he'll receive all eligible weeks as backpay. 3. The current extension approval rate is approximately 68%, assuming all eligibility criteria are met. 4. If your father hasn't worked since his initial claim began, he may need to complete the work search requirements very thoroughly to qualify. I recommend calling after 21 days if you haven't received any communication. Request to speak with a Tier 2 specialist who can access the extension request system.

Thank you for the detailed information! It's extremely helpful to know the actual timeframes. He has been meeting all work search requirements, so hopefully that will help his chances. We'll mark our calendar and call after 21 days if we don't hear anything.

Just want to point out that there are TWO different extension forms with similar numbers - DE2525XX is for standard UI extensions, but DE2525XXX (with three Xs) is for special circumstances. Make sure you sent the right one! I sent the wrong form and lost weeks waiting :

0 coins

Oh no, now I'm worried! The form we submitted definitely had XX at the end, not XXX. We were told this was for extending regular UI benefits since his benefit year isn't over but his claim balance is almost zero. Does that sound right?

0 coins

Yes, you submitted the correct form. DE2525XX is for standard benefit extensions within the same benefit year. The XXX form is for special circumstances like training extensions or disaster-related claims.

Oh good! Sorry for the confusion, just wanted to make sure. My situation was different because I was in their training program.

has he tried checking his ui online account? sometimes the extension gets approved but they dont mail anything...

We've been checking the UI Online account daily and there's no update there either. Still shows the original claim balance running out next week with no mention of the extension request.

THE ENTIRE EDD MAIL SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE PEOPLE GIVE UP!!! I'm absolutely CONVINCED they deliberately delay mail processing hoping people will just stop filing. My extension took 9 WEEKS to process last year and I nearly lost my apartment waiting. When I finally got through to someone, they said the form had been sitting in a pile the entire time. Nobody even LOOKED at it until I called!!! The system is BROKEN and they don't care because it saves them money when people give up. If your dad needs that money for rent, DO NOT wait for mail processing. Call them every single day until someone helps you!!!!

That's terrifying. We absolutely can't wait 9 weeks. I'm going to try calling tomorrow morning.

this is why i always tell people to apply for calfresh while waiting for edd to fix things... at least you can eat while fighting with them

Quick update on processing times: EDD just announced they've added more staff to handle extension requests, which may reduce wait times to 20-25 days for newly submitted forms. However, forms submitted 2+ weeks ago (like yours) are still in the previous processing queue. One more thing to note: If your father has worked at all since his initial claim began (even part-time), make sure that information was properly reported on the extension request. Unreported income is the #1 reason extensions get denied or delayed for additional review.

He hasn't worked at all since losing his job last year, so thankfully that shouldn't be an issue. I appreciate the update on the processing times. Even 20-25 days feels painfully long when rent is due, but at least there's some hope it might not be the full 6 weeks others have experienced.

I'm in a similar situation with my mom's extension request! We submitted hers about 3 weeks ago and still nothing. Reading through all these responses is both helpful and terrifying - sounds like we're in for a long wait. I had no idea the mail processing was this slow. We also didn't know about the online option through UI Online. For what it's worth, I called yesterday and after 2 hours of trying finally got through to someone who at least confirmed they received the form, so that's something. They couldn't give me a timeline beyond "4-6 weeks" but said to keep certifying. Hang in there - it sounds like most people eventually get approved, it just takes forever.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It's actually reassuring to hear from someone going through the same thing. The fact that you were able to get confirmation they received the form is huge - at least we know it's not lost in the mail somewhere. I think I'm going to try calling tomorrow to see if I can get the same confirmation for my dad's form. Two hours of calling sounds brutal but probably worth it for that peace of mind. Hope your mom's extension gets approved soon!

It's really helpful to hear from someone in the exact same situation! My dad and I are dealing with the same anxious waiting period. The confirmation that they at least received the form would give us so much peace of mind - I think I'll definitely try calling tomorrow too, even if it takes hours. It's frustrating that the system is so slow, but knowing that most people do eventually get approved helps. Thanks for sharing your experience and best of luck with your mom's extension!

I'm going through this exact same process right now! My extension form was submitted by mail about 10 days ago and I'm already getting anxious reading about these 4-6 week wait times. The stress of not knowing when (or if) it'll get approved while bills are piling up is really getting to me. One thing I learned from calling EDD last week - they said even if you don't hear anything by the time your current benefits run out, you should absolutely keep certifying every two weeks. The rep explained that if your extension gets approved, those "unpaid" certification weeks will automatically get processed for backpay. She said people who stop certifying thinking there's no point actually hurt their chances of getting continuous benefits once approved. Also wanted to mention that my local library has computers available if anyone needs help checking their UI Online account regularly. Sometimes updates show up there before any mail arrives. Hang in there everyone - this waiting game is brutal but it sounds like persistence pays off!

This is such valuable advice about continuing to certify even when benefits run out! I had no idea that stopping certification could hurt your chances - that's definitely something the EDD reps should be telling people upfront. The library tip is great too, especially for folks who might not have reliable internet at home. It's reassuring to hear from someone else going through this right now. The waiting and uncertainty really is brutal, but knowing we're not alone in this process helps a lot. Thanks for sharing what you learned from calling EDD!

I'm new to this whole EDD extension process and reading through everyone's experiences here is both enlightening and nerve-wracking! My unemployment benefits are set to expire in about 3 weeks, and I was planning to submit the DE2525XX form by mail since that's what the EDD rep suggested when I called last week. But after seeing all these stories about 4-6 week processing times, I'm seriously reconsidering. Can someone clarify the online submission option that was mentioned? I have a UI Online account but I don't see any obvious way to submit an extension request through there. Is it really through the "Contact EDD" function like Dylan mentioned, or is there a specific form upload area I'm missing? Also, for those who've been through this - is there any advantage to waiting until your benefits actually run out before submitting the extension, or should I submit it now while I still have a few weeks left? I don't want to submit too early and somehow mess up the process, but I also don't want to end up in the same situation as Giovanni's dad where rent is due and there's no money coming in. Thanks to everyone sharing their experiences - this community has been incredibly helpful for navigating what feels like an impossible system!

Welcome to the EDD extension maze! I'm also pretty new to this process but have learned a lot from reading everyone's experiences here. From what I've gathered, you should definitely submit your extension request NOW rather than waiting until your benefits run out - several people mentioned that it's better to have it in the system early since processing takes so long. Regarding the online option, I think there might be some confusion in the thread. From what I can tell, the actual DE2525XX form itself might only be available for mail submission, but you can use the "Contact EDD" function in UI Online to ask about your extension status or to expedite processing once you've submitted the form. I don't think there's a direct upload feature for the extension form itself, but I could be wrong about that. Given all the processing time horror stories here, you might want to consider what Dmitry mentioned about Claimyr to help you get through to someone at EDD once you submit your form. The peace of mind of knowing they actually received it seems worth it based on what Justin went through. Good luck with your extension - this waiting game really is stressful but it sounds like most people do get approved eventually!

I'm dealing with the exact same situation right now! My extension form was mailed 18 days ago and I'm getting really anxious about the timeline. Reading everyone's experiences here has been both helpful and scary - the range seems to be anywhere from 3-9 weeks which is just insane. One thing I wanted to add that might help others: when I called EDD yesterday (took about 90 minutes to get through), the rep told me they've been having issues with their mail sorting system which is adding even more delays. She suggested that anyone who mailed forms in early March should expect the longer end of the processing time. The rep also mentioned something I hadn't seen discussed here - apparently if you have any outstanding issues on your claim (even minor ones like a missing work search contact from months ago), it can delay extension processing significantly. She recommended checking your UI Online account for any "outstanding issues" alerts and resolving them ASAP if you find any. For what it's worth, she did confirm that as long as you keep certifying, you'll get all the backpay once approved. But man, this waiting period with bills piling up is absolutely brutal. Hang in there Giovanni - sounds like you're doing everything right!

Thank you so much for sharing that info about the mail sorting issues and outstanding claim problems! That's exactly the kind of insider knowledge that's impossible to find anywhere else. I'm definitely going to check my dad's UI Online account tonight for any outstanding issues - we hadn't thought to look for that. 90 minutes to get through sounds awful but getting that kind of detailed information makes it worth it. It's frustrating that they're having mail sorting problems on top of everything else, but at least now we know what we're dealing with. Really appreciate you taking the time to share what you learned!

I'm in a very similar situation and this thread has been incredibly helpful! My dad's benefits are also running out soon and we just mailed his DE2525XX form last week. Reading about the 4-6 week processing times is really stressing me out, especially with all the bills coming due. One thing I wanted to ask - has anyone had success with faxing the extension form instead of mailing it? I found an EDD fax number online but I'm not sure if they accept the DE2525XX form that way. It seems like it might be faster than mail but I don't want to mess up the process by using the wrong submission method. Also, for those who've gotten through to EDD by phone - what's the best time of day to call? I've been trying in the afternoons but maybe mornings are better? The idea of spending hours on hold is daunting but getting confirmation they received the form would give us so much peace of mind. Thanks to everyone sharing their experiences - it's really helping those of us just starting this nerve-wracking process!

I haven't tried faxing the DE2525XX form, but I'd be really careful about that - from what I've read here, using the wrong submission method could delay things even more. Maybe call first to confirm if they accept it by fax before trying? As for calling times, I've had the best luck calling right at 8am when they open. Set multiple alarms and start dialing exactly at 8:00am - the hold times seem shortest first thing in the morning. After 10am it gets progressively harder to get through. Also make sure you have your dad's SSN and claim info ready because they'll ask for it right away. Good luck - this whole process is so stressful but sounds like persistence pays off!

I'm going through this exact same situation with my mom! We submitted her DE2525XX extension form by mail about 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything. Reading through all these responses is both terrifying and helpful - I had no idea the mail processing could take 6+ weeks. One thing I learned when I finally got through to EDD last week (after calling for 2 hours straight) is that they're currently processing extension forms in the order they were physically received at their processing center, not necessarily when they were mailed. So even though we mailed ours 3 weeks ago, it might have sat in their mailroom for days before actually entering the processing queue. The rep I spoke with also mentioned that they're seeing a huge surge in extension requests right now, which is contributing to the delays. She couldn't give me a specific timeline but confirmed they received mom's form and said to keep certifying every two weeks no matter what. For anyone still waiting like us - hang in there. The uncertainty is brutal but it sounds like most people do eventually get approved. Just make sure to keep detailed records of when you submitted everything in case you need to reference it later!
