Will EDD expedite my extension if I call? Submitted July 2, need money for bills ASAP
I'm seriously stressing out right now. My regular UI benefits ran out last month, and I submitted all my extension paperwork on July 2nd (EDD received it on the 3rd according to tracking). The website says to wait 10-14 business days for processing, but I literally can't wait that long. Rent is due on the 15th, and I've got a car payment that's already 5 days late. Does anyone know if calling EDD might get them to process my extension faster? Has anyone had luck with this? I know their phone lines are a nightmare, but I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. Just worried I'll waste hours on the phone for nothing...

dont waste ur time calling. i submitted my extension in may and they told me the EXACT same thing (10-14 days) and it took them 23 days!!! when i finally got thru to someone they just said 'its in process' and couldnt do anything to speed it up. the system is completely broken.

•23 days?! I literally can't wait that long. Did they at least backpay you for all the weeks you certified during that waiting period?

In my experience, calling can absolutely help speed things up, but it depends on which agent you get. Some have the ability to push your extension through processing while others will just tell you to wait. The key is getting through to a Tier 2 specialist who has the authority to actually process claims. When you call, specifically ask to speak with a claim specialist or Tier 2 representative about expediting your extension due to financial hardship. Have your paperwork submission confirmation and tracking info ready to reference. I'd suggest calling right when they open at 8am for the best chance of getting through.

•THIS!!! ⬆️ I had the same situation in January and was about to lose my apartment. Got a Tier 2 rep after 3 tries and they processed my extension ON THE SPOT. Money was in my account 48 hours later. Don't listen to people saying calling never helps - it absolutely CAN help, but you need to reach the right person!

I tried calling EDD for 2 weeks straight and never got through... always got the "we're experiencing higher than normal call volume" message and then it hung up on me. I was calling at different times too, first thing in the morning, mid-day, right before they closed. Nothing worked.

•Try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it's the only thing that worked for me after spending weeks trying to get through to EDD. They use technology to constantly redial EDD until there's an open line, then connect you directly. They even have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. When I finally got through, the agent was able to process my extension immediately instead of waiting the full 14+ days. Seriously saved me from missing mortgage payments.

Have you tried talking to your landlord and explaining the situation? Most landlords would rather work with you than go through the hassle of eviction. Maybe show them proof that you've filed for the extension and are just waiting on processing. As for your car payment, call the lender and ask for a hardship extension - many will give you a one-time payment deferral.

•I already used up my goodwill with my landlord during covid... and my car loan company said they can only defer if I have proof of continued income coming, which is exactly what I'm trying to get from EDD! Catch-22 situation.

not to scare you but my friend's extension took 32 days to process this year and another friend's took just 5 days. seems totally random honestly.

•It's not entirely random. Extensions that require additional review (work history verification, identity issues, etc.) take longer than straightforward ones. Also, certain types of extensions process faster than others. The PEUC extensions typically process faster than Fed-Ed, for example. It also depends on current workload at EDD.

THE EDD SYSTEM IS DELIBERATELY SLOW!!!! They make us wait hoping we'll give up or find jobs before they have to pay us what WE ARE ENTITLED TO. I waited 19 days for my extension to process in March and then another week for the money to hit my Money Network card. That's TWENTY SIX DAYS with NO INCOME while they sit on their butts "processing" a few keystrokes in a computer. It's DISGRACEFUL how they treat people!!!

•100% agree with this. and dont forget about how they randomly FLAG accounts for "verification" which adds ANOTHER 2-3 weeks to the process. the whole system is designed to make claiming benefits as difficult as possible.

I submitted my extension in April and it took exactly 12 business days to process. So they do sometimes hit their timeline. Make sure you're still certifying for benefits each week during the waiting period - they'll backpay those weeks once your extension is approved. The important thing is to keep certifying even if your portal shows $0 benefits available.

•Thank you! I've been certifying but my portal shows $0 available and all weeks say "Not Paid" status. I was worried I was doing something wrong.

•You're doing it correctly! Those weeks will automatically flip to "Paid" status once your extension is processed. Just keep the certification receipts as proof in case there are any issues later. And definitely try calling - it can make a difference in speeding things up.

•That gives me hope! I'm definitely going to try calling tomorrow morning. Did you say anything specific that seemed to help your case?

•just be honest about your financial situation! i told them i was about to miss rent and car payment and they were understanding. also have your confirmation number from when you submitted your extension paperwork handy - that seemed to help them locate everything quickly
