Benefits exhausted but no PEUC extension - Will EDD automatically file for me after 20+ years working?
I exhausted my regular UI claim last Friday (May 12, 2025) and got a message saying 'if eligible for continued benefits, it will be processed automatically.' It's been almost two weeks now and I'm seeing absolutely NOTHING in my UI Online account. No updates, no messages, nothing about extension eligibility! I've worked consistently for over 20 years before this layoff (manufacturing industry), so I assumed I'd qualify for some type of extension. Does anyone know how long this 'automatic' process actually takes? Should I be proactively calling EDD or just continue waiting? My rent is due in 10 days and I'm starting to panic! Do they eventually notify you either way even if you're denied?

•3 weeks!? That's crazy. Did you have to do anything on your end, or did it just suddenly appear in your account?

There are no automatic extensions currently active in California's UI system like there were during COVID. After you exhaust regular UI benefits, you'll need to wait until your benefit year ends and then file a new claim if you're still unemployed. The system message about 'automatic' processing is outdated and confusing. Since you mentioned 20 years of work history, you likely had the maximum 26 weeks of regular UI. Once that's exhausted, there are no federal extensions available in 2025 unless you qualify for Fed-ED (which is currently not triggered on in California). You might want to check if you qualify for any other assistance programs while job searching.

•Thank you for the clear explanation. That's really disappointing news. The message made it sound like something would happen automatically. So there's literally nothing else available until my benefit year ends? That's almost 6 months away!

I HATE how the EDD systems still have these outdated messages!!! They never bother updating them and it just confuses everyone. I got the same message when my benefits ran out in March and waited WEEKS thinking something would happen. Nothing ever did. Called EDD 47 times before finally getting through and they confirmed no extensions exist right now. You're just DONE when your weeks run out. The whole system is BROKEN!

•47 calls?? That's insane. I've tried calling twice already but couldn't get through. I guess I need to be more persistent.

Hey, after struggling with a similar situation, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helped me finally get through to an EDD rep after my benefits stopped. Instead of calling hundreds of times, they basically hold your place in line and call you when they have an EDD agent. Saved me days of frustration. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep I talked to confirmed what others are saying - regular UI is 26 weeks max now with no automatic extensions. But at least I got a definitive answer instead of waiting and stressing.

•It worked for me. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying to call for 3 days straight. Not saying it's the only option, but it did what it promised - got me through to an actual person at EDD.

when i lost my job back in 2023 i had a similar thing happen. the edd website is very confusing. my benefits ran out after like 6 months and that was it. i think during covid they had all those extensions but not anymore. have you tried applying for calfresh? that helped me get by until i found another job

•That's a good idea about CalFresh. I hadn't thought about that option. I'll look into applying while I continue job hunting. Thanks for the suggestion!

To clarify what others have mentioned: Prior to 2021, there were various extension programs like PEUC and Fed-ED that would automatically kick in after regular UI exhaustion. These programs expired nationwide and were not renewed. Currently, California only offers the standard 26 weeks of regular UI benefits in a benefit year (which lasts 12 months from your application date). When your benefit year ends, you'll need to file a new claim if you're still unemployed and have earned sufficient wages in the base period. If you're experiencing financial hardship, I'd recommend: 1. Apply for CalFresh (food assistance) 2. Contact your county's General Assistance/Relief program 3. Look into local rental assistance programs 4. Visit your nearest America's Job Center of California for employment services The EDD website should remove those outdated messages about automatic extensions, as they cause unnecessary confusion.

•Thank you for such a detailed explanation. This is exactly what I needed to understand. I'll start applying for those other assistance programs right away while continuing my job search. Really appreciate everyone's help clarifying this confusing situation!
