EDD claim approval taking forever - 5 weeks and still pending

I submitted my initial unemployment claim 5 weeks ago after being laid off from my restaurant job (reduced staff due to slow season) and my claim status is STILL showing as pending. I check UI Online every morning and nothing has changed. The tracker says 'claim received' but no movement beyond that. I certified for benefits twice already but both weeks show $0 paid since my claim isn't approved yet. I'm getting seriously worried about making May rent. According to the EDD website it should only take about 10 days to process a claim - what's happening? Is this normal now? Anyone else experiencing super long wait times for approval?

7 WEEKS?? Oh god that's terrifying. Did you try calling them? I keep putting it off because I've heard the wait times are insane.

I went through this exact situation last month! My claim was pending for almost 6 weeks with no explanation. It turns out there was an 'identity verification issue' that was never communicated to me. The system flagged something in my application but never sent me any notification about needing additional info. I only found out when I FINALLY got through to a rep on the phone. My recommendation is don't wait any longer - you need to talk to someone. The standard processing time is definitely not 5+ weeks unless there's a specific issue with your claim that needs resolving.

That's really helpful, thank you. I've been hoping it would just resolve itself but sounds like I need to be more proactive. How did you manage to get through on the phone? I've tried a few times and always get the 'we're experiencing high call volume' message.

This is unfortunately common but not normal. The most likely reasons for delay are: 1. Identity verification issues 2. Employment history verification (they need to contact your employer) 3. Need to verify reason for separation 4. Wage investigation if your reported wages don't match employer records 5. Backlog in processing claims The best course of action is to contact them ASAP. If your claim has an issue, it won't resolve without intervention. Keep certifying even while pending - once approved, you'll receive all eligible weeks in backpay. One important thing to check: in your UI Online account, look for any messages or tasks in your inbox. Sometimes they request additional information but the notification email goes to spam.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I just checked my UI Online inbox and there's nothing there. No tasks or messages requesting more information. I'm guessing it might be the employment verification since my former employer has a history of being slow with paperwork. Is there a way to nudge that process along?

Oh wow I didn't even think about checking for mistakes on my application. I'll definitely look at that. Thanks for the tip!

After trying to get through to EDD for TWO WEEKS straight (calling 30+ times a day), I finally used Claimyr and got connected to a rep in about 20 minutes. Worth every penny because they confirmed there was a flag on my account that needed manual review. The rep removed the hold right there on the phone and my claim went from pending to paid within 48 hours. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Their website is claimyr.com - honestly saved my sanity and probably my apartment since I was about to miss rent.

Thanks for the suggestion. At this point I'm willing to try anything. Did they tell you what the flag on your account was for? I'm wondering if mine might be something similar.

Former EDD employee here. The current average processing time is 2-3 weeks for regular claims without issues, but if there's ANY discrepancy or verification needed, it can easily stretch to 6-8 weeks without intervention. The system is designed to flag potential issues for manual review, but the backlog for those reviews is substantial. Calling is absolutely your best option at this point. If you get through to a Tier 1 rep who can't help, politely ask to be transferred to a Tier 2 specialist who has authorization to remove holds. One tip: if your employer confirmed your layoff reason as "seasonal reduction in staff," make sure that's exactly how it appears in your claim. Any discrepancy between your stated reason and their response will trigger a manual review process.

Thank you so much for the insider perspective. I'll definitely call tomorrow morning and ask for a Tier 2 specialist if needed. If they ask, should I specifically mention that it was a seasonal reduction in staff to make sure it matches what my employer might have said? My biggest worry is just not knowing what's causing the delay.

the EDD system is COMPLETELY BROKEN!!! i filed in january and had to wait nearly 9 weeks with NO COMMUNICATION from them at all. meanwhile bills piling up and they don't care AT ALL. this state takes our taxes but can't provide basic services when we need them most. DISGUSTING how they treat people who are already struggling!!!

While I understand your frustration, 9 weeks is far outside the norm even with current backlogs. Most claims with no issues are processed within 2-3 weeks. Claims with verification needs typically resolve within 4-6 weeks. If you experienced a 9-week delay, there was likely a specific issue with your claim that required resolution.

Update: I took everyone's advice and managed to speak with an EDD rep this morning! Turns out there was an issue with my identity verification that needed manual review. The rep said my ID.me verification completed successfully, but something in their system didn't properly connect it to my claim. She fixed it while I was on the phone and said I should see movement on my claim within 48 hours. Thanks everyone for pushing me to call instead of just waiting! Will update again once I (hopefully) see payment coming through.

That's great news! So glad you got it resolved. This happens way more often than it should - the ID.me verification not properly connecting to claims. Hopefully your payments will process quickly now!

Awesome! Did you end up using Claimyr or were you able to get through on your own? Either way, glad you're getting it sorted out!

Final update: My claim went from pending to paid this morning! All 5 weeks worth of benefits were deposited to my EDD debit card at once. Such a relief! For anyone else stuck in pending limbo - definitely call rather than wait. And yes @helpfuluser86 I did use Claimyr to get through after trying on my own for 2 days with no luck. Totally worth it to get this resolved!

Excellent news! This is why I always recommend calling - most 'pending' issues can be resolved with a single phone call to the right representative. Glad you got your benefits and make sure to keep certifying on time going forward.
