Got BofA EDD card in 2025 but thought EDD switched to Money Network - very confused
So I just got a Bank of America EDD debit card in the mail yesterday, which has me totally confused because I thought California EDD switched to Money Network cards a while back? I filed my claim about 3 weeks ago and was expecting the Money Network card they talk about on the EDD website. Did they switch back to BofA? Is this card even legitimate or is it some kind of scam? The letter looks official with EDD letterhead but I'm paranoid about identity theft these days. I'm afraid to activate it. Has anyone else received a BofA card recently instead of Money Network?

This is definitely unusual. EDD formally switched from Bank of America to Money Network in 2023, and all new claims should be receiving Money Network cards unless you specifically requested direct deposit. There are a few possibilities here: 1. Your claim somehow got processed through the old system (extremely rare) 2. You may have had an old claim with a BofA card, and they're reusing your account 3. It could potentially be fraudulent I'd recommend calling EDD directly to verify before activating it. Also check your UI Online account to see what payment method is listed there.

•Thank you for the quick response! I did have an old claim back in 2021, but I thought those cards expired? I'll check my UI Online account right now.

OMG the EXACT SAME THING happened to my brother last month!!! He called EDD like 20 times and couldn't get through to anyone!!! When he finally did, they told him it was a MISTAKE and they had to cancel that card and issue a new Money Network one. It took him almost 3 weeks to get the correct card and access his benefits. The EDD system is SO BROKEN!!!!

•Oh no, that sounds like a nightmare. I really can't afford to wait 3 more weeks for a new card. I've got bills piling up already.

•I just checked and it shows "Debit Card" under payment method, but doesn't specify which type. I don't remember seeing an option to choose between different cards when I filed.

I went through this exact situation in February. What happened was I had an old BofA card from a previous claim that was still valid (they're good for 3 years), so their system automatically reused it instead of issuing a Money Network card. If you look at the card's expiration date, it's probably from your previous claim. If the card is legitimate, you can absolutely use it - the funds will still be deposited there if that's what's in their system. But if you prefer the Money Network card (which has better security features), you need to call EDD and specifically request they change your payment method. When you check your UI Online account, go to "Payment Methods" - does it show BofA or Money Network specifically?

•You're right! The expiration date is October 2026, which would mean it was issued in 2023 from my previous claim. I didn't even notice that. I checked under Payment Methods and it just says "Debit Card" without specifying which one. I think I'll just use this card since it's already set up rather than dealing with waiting for a new one. Thank you so much for solving this mystery!

•This happened to me too! Except I waited 4 weeks for nothing because my mail gets forwarded and the card never arrived. So frustrating.

I had the exact same issue last month and spent DAYS trying to get through to EDD for clarification. After dozens of attempts calling their regular number and getting the "maximum callers" message, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a representative. They have this service that basically calls EDD for you and connects you when they get through. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The EDD rep confirmed that I had an existing BofA card in their system from a previous claim that was still valid, so their system automatically assigned my new claim to that card instead of issuing a Money Network card. They said I could either use the BofA card or request a switch to Money Network, but that would take 7-10 additional business days. I just kept the BofA card since I already had it.

•Thanks for the tip about Claimyr! I might need that if I run into any other issues. For now, I think I'll just use the BofA card since it seems to be legitimate and I don't want to wait longer for benefits.

Glad you figured it out! It's actually helpful to know EDD is still supporting some BofA cards from older claims rather than forcing everyone to switch. If you're comfortable using the BofA card, that's definitely the fastest way to access your benefits. Just remember to set up account alerts for any transactions, as the Money Network cards do have better security features overall.

•That's good advice about the alerts. I'll set those up right away. Thank you all for your help!

•Yes, the Bank of America EDD cards have the California bear on them - that's the official design. If you received one and haven't activated it, you might want to check your UI Online account to see if that's your assigned payment method.
