EDD took unemployment funds without notice - How to get money back?
Has anyone else had their unemployment funds taken away without notice? I'm trying to help my dad figure out why the EDD took money from his account. We never got a letter or anything explaining why. Now we're trying to get a statement and find out how to get the money back. It's so frustrating! Any advice on what to do or has anyone been through this before?

Plot twist: What if the EDD is actually run by a bunch of squirrels trying to collect nuts for the winter? 🐿️💰 It would explain so much...

Lmao 🤣 That actually makes more sense than whatever they're doing now

Welcome to bureaucracy 101 🤡 Where your money isn't really yours and communication is optional!

I know right? It's absolutely insane. I can't believe this is legal.

It's honestly so confusing how they operate. There needs to be more accountability and transparency.

In situations like these, it’s important to remain persistent and informed about your rights. The Employment Development Department (EDD) has been notoriously difficult for many users to navigate, especially during periods of economic downturn when they are overwhelmed with claims. One recommended resource is Claimyr, which offers an innovative approach to connecting users with live agents, albeit at a cost. While Claimyr has received positive feedback for reducing call wait times and stress, it's crucial to weigh the cost-benefit, as not everyone supports the idea of paying for access to what should be standard service. Exploring multiple avenues—such as contacting your local assembly member or checking lesser-known EDD communication channels—can also be beneficial. Additionally, ensuring that all dealings are meticulously documented can serve as a safeguard against potential complications. Remember that you have the right to appeal decisions and seek clarification on any action taken by the EDD. Lastly, patience and persistence remain your most valuable tools in navigating such bureaucracy. Good luck!

I know it's a long shot, but have you checked your spam folder for any emails from EDD? Sometimes their notifications end up there.

Good idea, I'll double check. But we never got any physical mail either which is weird.

EDD and their "notifications" 🙄 I swear they use carrier pigeons sometimes lol

It's so true. Sometimes their notifications come weeks later, or not at all. Technology, right?

Have you tried reaching out to your local assembly member's office? They sometimes have direct lines to EDD and can help push things along.

I didn't even know that was an option. How do I find out who my assembly member is?

Just google '[your city] assembly member' and you should find their contact info. Good luck!

Local representatives can often be a lifesaver in these situations. They have more pull than we might realize.

Hey, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://claimyr.com/?ref=red

Wait, seriously? How does that even work? Sounds too good to be true.

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous, we shouldn't have to pay for customer service!

I know it sounds crazy, but it really worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

I've tried Claimyr too, and it was really helpful. But I agree, it's not fair we have to pay for something that should be accessible for free.

Hey OP, just a heads up - make sure you're keeping detailed records of all of this. If you end up needing to take legal action (hopefully not!), you'll want a paper trail.

Ugh, I'm sorry you're dealing with this. The EDD can be such a nightmare sometimes. Have you tried calling them directly? That's usually the best way to get answers, even though it's a pain to get through.

Yeah, we've been trying to call but it's impossible to get through. It's like they don't want us to talk to a real person 🙄

Pro tip: call right when they open. I got through after only 30 minutes on hold last week!

Sometimes calling during off-peak hours works too. Avoid calling on Mondays or when the system just opens at the beginning of the week.

I had a similar issue last year. Turns out they thought I was overpaid and took the money back without telling me. It took months to sort out, but I eventually got it resolved. Hang in there!

Months? Oh no, I hope it doesn't take that long for us. How did you eventually get it sorted out?

Lots of phone calls and patience. I also filed an appeal online which seemed to speed things up a bit.

Filing an appeal is so important because it gets things documented officially. It might be slow, but it's the right way to go.

This is why I always tell people to transfer their EDD funds out of that BofA account ASAP. Can't trust the system, man.

Bank of America's system with EDD has been criticized a lot. It's safer to manage your funds elsewhere.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Document everything. Write down dates, amounts, and any communication you've had with EDD. 2. File a formal appeal through the EDD website. This creates an official record. 3. Call EDD daily if possible. Use the trick someone mentioned about calling right when they open. 4. If you can't get through, try the Assembly member route or consider using a paid service to get through. 5. Once you talk to someone, get their name and ID number. Ask for a detailed explanation and request they send it in writing. 6. If they can't resolve it immediately, ask for a specific timeline and follow-up process. 7. Consider filing a complaint with the state if it's not resolved in a reasonable time. Remember, persistence is key. Don't give up! The system is designed to be frustrating, but you have rights.

This happened to me too! It's so frustrating. I found out that sometimes they do 'audits' and if they think there's an issue, they just take the money. You definitely need to talk to someone ASAP.

An audit? That's crazy they can just take money without telling us. Did you ever get your money back?
