EDD sent me a new debit card but my claim's been closed since 2025 - why?

I'm completely confused. Just received a brand new Money Network debit card in the mail yesterday from EDD, but I haven't had an active claim since March 2025 when I went back to teaching full-time. I never requested a new card (still have my old one in a drawer somewhere) and there's been absolutely no communication from EDD about this. When I log into UI Online, it still shows my claim as inactive. Called the automated line but couldn't get any info because my claim is closed. Is this some kind of error or should I be worried about identity theft? Anyone else had this happen?

Actually this JUST happened to my cousin last month!! The EDD has been making tons of mistakes lately with their new system upgrade. When she called they said it was an 'automatic refresh' of expired cards but hers wasn't even expired!!! You DEFININTELY need to call and make sure no one filed a fraudulent claim using your info. Some people are getting hit with taxes for benefits they never received!!!!

Oh great, that's exactly what I was worried about. Did your cousin eventually get through to someone? I've tried calling twice today and just got the 'too many callers' message both times.

This is actually a routine process - Money Network cards have a standard expiration date (usually 3 years from issue), and they automatically send new ones when the old ones are about to expire, even if your claim is closed. If you check your old card, it probably expired recently or will expire soon. The new card will have a zero balance unless you file a new claim. No need to worry about fraud unless you see claim activity you didn't initiate when you log into UI Online.

Thank you! I found my old card and you're right - it expires next month. I didn't even think about that. Would still be nice if they included a note explaining this with the new card.

I had something similar happen last year, but in my case someone HAD actually filed a fraudulent claim using my information. I only found out because I received a tax form for benefits I never collected. You should definitely verify with EDD that no new claim has been filed in your name. After trying for days to get through on the phone, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with an EDD agent. They got me through to a rep in less than 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Better to check now than to find out during tax season that someone's been collecting benefits under your name.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely check to make sure there's no fraudulent activity. I might try that service if I can't get through in the next couple days.

When I went back to work, EDD still sent me a new card too. Don't worry about it. But also don't throw it away! If you ever need to file again, they'll use the same card to deposit funds rather than sending yet another new one. Just put it somewhere safe.

The automatic card replacement is standard procedure, but it's always good to verify there's no unauthorized activity on your account. Here's what you should do: 1) Check your UI Online account for any recent claim activity 2) Look at your State Tax Account for any 1099-G forms that might indicate benefits were paid 3) Check your credit report for any suspicious activity If everything looks normal, then it's just the standard card replacement process. Money Network debit cards are typically issued with a 3-year validity period, and the replacement is automatic regardless of claim status. The EDD doesn't always communicate this clearly.

Why would they waste money sending new cards to people who don't have active claims?? Just another example of government inefficiency. They should save those resources for people actually trying to get their benefits! I've been waiting 6 weeks for my disability claim to process and they're over here sending cards to people who don't need them.

Update: I finally got through to EDD this morning. The rep confirmed what several of you said - it's just an automatic replacement because my old card was expiring. She verified there's no new claim activity on my account. Thanks everyone for your help!

So glad to hear it wasn't fraud!!! The EDD really should include some kind of note explaining this with the new cards. Would save everyone a lot of stress!!!
