EDD promised conditional payments within 48 hours - anyone actually get them?
After 6 weeks of my claim being stuck in pending, I FINALLY got through to an EDD rep today after calling 23 times (not exaggerating). The agent told me they're putting my payments on 'conditional payment' status and said I should see the money within 48 hours. Has anyone actually had this happen? Did the money really show up that fast? I'm literally down to my last $74 and rent is due next week. I've been surviving on credit cards but I'm maxed out now. Just wondering if I should actually believe them or if this is just another empty promise. Holding my breath but not getting my hopes up.

Yes, conditional payments are legitimate and were introduced to help clear the backlog of pending claims. They'll pay you while they continue to verify your eligibility. In my experience, they do actually show up within 48-72 hours in most cases. Make sure your payment method (Money Network card or direct deposit) is properly set up in the system so there aren't any delays once they release the funds.

•Thank you! This gives me some hope. I have direct deposit set up already. Just to be clear, do these conditional payments show up differently on the UI Online portal or do they just change from 'pending' to 'paid' like regular payments?

•I started calling at exactly 8:01 AM. Got the "too many callers" message about 22 times, but kept redialing immediately. Finally got into the queue around 8:45 and waited 38 minutes to speak to someone. Persistence was key!

I went through this exact situation in February. They promised conditional payments within 48 hours, but it actually took 5 business days for mine to appear. When they did show up, they switched from 'pending' to 'paid' just like regular payments - there's no special marking for conditional payments on your payment history. The important thing is to keep certifying on time even while you're waiting, and double-check your payment method is correct. If you don't see the payments by Monday, I'd recommend using Claimyr to get through to EDD again. I wasted two weeks trying to call on my own, then used their service and got connected within an hour. Their video shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. The website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out. Way better than calling hundreds of times.

•Totally legit. I was skeptical too but it actually works. They basically keep dialing for you until they get through, then connect you. Saved me days of frustration.

Conditional payments were implemented after a court order forced EDD to stop delaying benefits while they investigated claims. They have to pay you while they continue their eligibility review. In most cases, you'll see the payment status change within 2-3 business days. Weekend processing can sometimes delay things. The important thing to understand is that if they later determine you weren't eligible, they will create an overpayment case and you'll need to repay those funds. About 80-85% of conditional payments end up being proper claims, but you should be aware of the potential repayment risk.

•That's really helpful information, thank you. I'm not worried about overpayment since I know I'm eligible - I was laid off after 4 years at the same company and have all my documentation. I just need the money now before I get evicted. Really hoping it comes through!

UPDATE: The conditional payments actually came through!! I checked my account this morning (about 36 hours after my call) and all 6 weeks switched from PENDING to PAID! My bank account shows the deposit is scheduled for tomorrow. I'm literally crying right now. After months of stress, I can finally pay my rent and utilities. Thank you to everyone who responded with info and support. If anyone else is stuck with pending payments, don't give up on calling - it really does make a difference when you can finally reach a human being.

•Great news! So glad it worked out for you. This is exactly how the conditional payment system is supposed to work. Make sure you keep certifying on time for your upcoming weeks to avoid any interruptions.

I had a similar experience. Called for weeks. Finally got through and they told me I'd get conditional payments while they finished reviewing my identity documents. Took about 3 days for the status to change to paid and another 2 days for the money to hit my account. So plan for 5 business days to be safe, but it sounds like you might get yours faster. Here's something important they don't tell you: even after getting conditional payments, you need to keep an eye on your EDD inbox for any additional verification requests. I nearly missed an important document request that came 2 weeks after my conditional payments started, and it could have caused problems.

•That's a really good tip about checking the inbox regularly - thank you! I'll make sure to keep looking for any messages from them even after I get paid.

what does conditional payment even mean? is that different from regular payment? i'm confused why they don't just pay people if they qualify??

•Conditional payments are basically EDD paying you while they're still reviewing your claim. In the past, they would keep everything pending until they finished their review, which could take months. After legal challenges, they now have to pay you conditionally while they continue investigating eligibility. So it's the same amount as regular payments, just issued before they've completed their full review.
