EDD benefit year ending tonight - can I still certify for January's pending weeks?
I'm in full panic mode right now! My benefit year ends TONIGHT at midnight and I just realized I have several weeks from January that I never certified for. I've been holding off certifying because I had some complicated income reporting issues I wanted to sort out first, but time got away from me. Does anyone know if midnight tonight is my absolute last chance to certify for those January weeks? Or can I still certify for those weeks even after my benefit year officially ends? I'm worried that once the clock strikes midnight, I'll lose access to those weeks completely. Would really appreciate any insights from people who've been in this situation before.

•Oh no, that's what I was afraid of. I'm literally going to stay up until midnight tonight to get these certifications done. Thanks for the heads up!

That's not entirely accurate. You can certify for weeks within your benefit year for up to 30 days after the certification becomes available. However, once your benefit year ends, the system typically won't allow you to certify for those weeks anymore. That said, there's a process called "backdating" where EDD can manually allow you to certify for missed weeks, but you need to contact them directly and explain your situation. They may or may not approve it depending on your reason for the delay. I would definitely certify tonight before midnight to be safe. Don't wait until the last minute because the system could be slow or have technical issues.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'm going to start certifying right away. Do you think I should also call EDD tomorrow just to make sure everything went through properly?

Yes, absolutely call EDD tomorrow! Even if you certify tonight, having a record that you attempted to resolve this before the deadline can help if there are any issues. Also, if you miss the deadline, you'll want to explain your situation right away. I was in a similar situation last year and had to call multiple times before reaching someone who could help with backdating. Persistence is key with EDD - don't give up after one try.

I went through this exact scenario in February. Tried calling EDD for 2 weeks and couldn't get through - their phone lines are completely overwhelmed. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The EDD rep I spoke with was able to help me certify for those missed weeks even though my benefit year had ended. Explained that they can make exceptions in certain circumstances. Definitely worth trying to reach them directly about this.

•Thank you so much for this tip! I'm going to check out that service if I have trouble getting through tomorrow. It's a relief to hear they helped you with a similar situation. Gives me hope!

EDD is such a nightmare!!! I lost out on 6 WEEKS of benefits because I didn't realize there was a certification deadline. Found out later that technically they CAN backdate if you have a "good cause" but they make it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to speak to anyone. The whole system is designed to make people give up. Their website is straight out of 1995 and the instructions are so confusing. They should make it CLEAR that there are strict deadlines. Not everyone checks their portal every single day!! Definitely certify tonight and call tomorrow but prepare for a frustrating experience. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING.

•i agree with everything you said! my sister works for the state (not EDD) and she says even government employees think EDD is the worst run department. designed to make people give up is 100% accurate

Quick update on the rules for anyone finding this thread later: For weeks within your benefit year: - You have 14 days from the date the certification becomes available to certify on time - You can still certify late for up to 30 days after that - After 30 days, you need to contact EDD directly for assistance Once your benefit year ends: - The online system typically won't allow you to certify for any past weeks - Only an EDD representative can manually process these certifications - You'll need to explain your "good cause" for the delay Hope this helps clear up some confusion about the process.

•Update: I finished certifying for all my January weeks just before midnight! The system accepted them, but they're showing as "pending" instead of "paid" - I'm guessing because they're so old. I'll try calling tomorrow to make sure everything is processed correctly. Thanks everyone for your help!

anybody know if its the same for pua claims? my mom has some weeks she never certified for from december but her claim ended in march

•PUA ended completely in September 2021. There are no more PUA benefits available regardless of certification status. Your mom would need to apply for regular UI if she's eligible.

@OP - Did you get your payment situation sorted out? I'm curious what happened with those pending certifications from January. Did they actually process and pay them?

•Yes! Finally got everything sorted. The pending payments stayed stuck for 2 weeks, but I managed to get through to EDD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. The rep explained that the system flagged the certifications as suspicious because they were done on the very last day of my benefit year. Had to answer some additional questions about why I delayed, but they released the payments after reviewing my case. Received everything yesterday! So relieved - it was about $2,400 I really needed.
