EDD SDI paperwork lost? Sent workers comp forms 4 weeks ago with no confirmation

I filed a workers' comp claim after getting injured at my construction job and sent in all the required SDI forms by mail almost 4 weeks ago (will be 4 weeks exactly this Friday). EDD's online system keeps saying they haven't received my paperwork yet! I'm starting to panic because my savings are running low and I need this disability income to cover my mortgage payment coming up. I've tried calling EDD every single day this week - morning, afternoon, even right when they open, but all I get is that stupid 'we're experiencing high call volume' message and then it hangs up. Has anyone dealt with this before? Should I just resend everything? Will that make things worse if they actually have my original paperwork somewhere in processing? I'm getting really worried about my claim getting lost in their system forever.

This happens ALL THE TIME with EDD's disability division. Their mail processing is a complete disaster!! When I hurt my back last year, they "lost" my paperwork TWICE and I had to resubmit everything. Most frustrating experience ever. If I were you, I'd definitely mail another copy but write "DUPLICATE SUBMISSION - ORIGINAL SENT ON [DATE]" in big letters across the top. That way they know you're not filing twice.

Ughhh that's so frustrating but thanks for the tip about marking it as a duplicate. Did resending speed things up for you or did you still have to wait another month?

For SDI claims related to work injuries, there's actually a specific process you need to follow. First, confirm whether your employer filed the initial report of injury with their workers' comp carrier. If they did, you should have received paperwork from both the workers' comp insurance AND EDD. Many people don't realize that workers' comp and SDI are separate systems that need to coordinate. Also, did you keep proof of mailing? If not, I'd suggest resending via certified mail so you have tracking. And make sure you're checking UI Online specifically for SDI claims (not regular unemployment).

Yes, my employer filed everything correctly with their workers comp carrier. I have the claim number and everything. I did keep the receipt from the post office but it wasn't certified mail, just regular. Should I resend everything certified this time?

I've been through this exact situation with my SDI claim after a workplace injury. Here's what you need to do: 1. Resend all paperwork via certified mail with return receipt 2. Take pictures of EVERYTHING before sending 3. Call the SDI office specifically (not the regular EDD line) - the number is 1-800-480-3287 4. When calling, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through - they'll connect you directly to an EDD agent instead of waiting for hours. Saved me days of frustration! You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km 5. Ask the agent to make a note in your file that you've submitted twice If your employer filed the workers' comp claim properly, you should be eligible for temporary disability through BOTH systems (though you won't get paid twice). The key is getting through to someone who can find your paperwork in their system.

Thank you! This is super helpful. I'm going to try that Claimyr service right now because I'm desperate to talk to someone. Did you have any issues with getting both workers comp and SDI to coordinate properly?

I've been checking my mail obsessively! Nothing from them yet, which is why I'm worried they never got my initial paperwork.

Their SDI department is WAY understaffed right now - I know someone who works there. Mail is literally sitting in bins waiting to be processed. Your paperwork is probably there but not scanned into the system yet. If you can get through to an agent (good luck with that!) they might be able to see if it's been received but not processed yet. One thing to keep in mind: if you have an active workers' compensation claim for the same injury, your SDI benefits will be affected. Workers comp is primary, and SDI is supposed to supplement if workers comp pays less than SDI would. But you DEFINITELY need to let both systems know about each other.

Thanks for the insider info! Yes, I disclosed the workers comp claim on my SDI application. I'm just worried about falling through the cracks between the two systems while my bills pile up.

EVERYONE is having this problem!!! I sent in my disability paperwork on February 10th and it STILL doesn't show up in their system. Called 48 times last week!!! This is ridiculous and should be illegal how they treat people who are injured and can't work!!!!

That's awful! Have you tried resending your paperwork? I'm trying to figure out if that helps or just creates more confusion.

I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above when I had a similar issue with my disability paperwork last month. It actually worked - got through to someone in about 40 minutes instead of calling for days. The agent told me they had my paperwork but it was sitting in a processing queue and hadn't been entered in the system yet. She was able to expedite it once I got through. Definitely worth trying if you're at the 4-week mark with no updates.

That's good to know it worked for you! I'm going to try it today. Did they tell you how much longer the processing would take after they expedited it?

After trying everything with my claim last year, I finally contacted my state assembly member's office. They have special liaisons who work directly with EDD. Within 3 days of contacting them, my paperwork was magically "found" and processed. Might be worth trying if all else fails.

That's a great idea I hadn't thought of! If I can't get through on the phone this week, I'll definitely try contacting my assembly member. Thanks for the suggestion!

I went through something similar with my SDI claim for a work injury about 6 months ago. The mail processing backlog is real - I ended up having to resend my paperwork twice before it finally got processed. Here's what worked for me: 1. Resend everything via certified mail with tracking (keep all receipts!) 2. Include a cover letter explaining this is a resubmission due to processing delays 3. Try calling the SDI line early in the morning (around 8:05 AM) - that's when I had the best luck getting through 4. If you have any medical appointments coming up, ask your doctor's office to fax records directly to EDD as backup The whole process took about 7 weeks total for me, but once it finally went through, I got all the back pay. Don't give up! The system is broken but your claim will eventually get processed. In the meantime, see if you can get any emergency assistance from local resources to help with bills.
