Paper SDI claim submitted July 3rd - still no updates. How long do EDD paper applications actually take?

I'm starting to panic a bit here. I submitted my paper disability claim form at the local EDD office on July 3rd (almost 4 weeks ago now) and haven't heard ANYTHING. No confirmation, no updates, nothing showing up in the online system. My doctor already completed their portion and I made sure everything was filled out correctly. I can't afford to wait much longer as I've already burned through most of my savings. Is this normal for paper applications? How long should I expect to wait before I get worried? Has anyone else experienced this with paper SDI forms? The rep at the office said it would be "processed soon" but didn't give any specific timeframe.

paper claims are always slower than online! mine took like 6 weeks last year. they prob haven't even scanned it into the system yet tbh

6 WEEKS?? Oh my god. I don't think I can wait that long. I should have just done it online but my doctor insisted on using the paper form.

Paper applications take significantly longer to process than online submissions. The typical timeline for paper claims is 4-6 weeks minimum, but it could stretch to 8 weeks during busy periods. Here's what you should do: 1. Call EDD to confirm they received your application (though getting through is challenging) 2. Check if your medical provider has received any requests for additional information 3. Create an SDI Online account if you haven't already - sometimes paper claims eventually appear there 4. If you're approaching the 6-week mark with no updates, consider having your doctor submit a follow-up certification Unfortunately, paper processing timeframes increased after the pandemic as more resources were shifted to online systems.

Thank you for the detailed response. I've tried calling about 15 times and can't get through to anyone. I'll check with my doctor about any requests and create that online account today.

This is why I ALWAYS tell people to file online!!! The EDD is still in the stone age with their paper processing. I filed a paper claim in 2024 and it took them 7 weeks just to acknowledge they had it. Then another 2 weeks to process. Meanwhile my rent was late and I had to borrow money from family. The system is completely broken.

You're absolutely right! I filed online in March and had my first payment in 9 days. Paper claims get stacked in bins waiting to be manually entered into their system. It's ridiculous in 2025 that they still use this archaic process.

I had the same issue earlier this year and found a solution that worked for me. After waiting 5 weeks for my paper claim to process, I was desperate to speak with an actual EDD representative. I discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an EDD agent within 15 minutes instead of spending hours on redial. Once I got through, I found out my form had been received but was waiting in a backlog. The representative expedited my claim and I received payment a week later. Yes, it absolutely worked for me. I was skeptical too but was desperate after not being able to get through for weeks. Got connected to an actual EDD disability rep who could see my claim in their system.

Hi there! I used to work at a doctor's office that dealt with disability claims frequently. Paper forms typically take 4-8 weeks to process, while online applications take 2-3 weeks. This is because paper forms need to be manually entered into their system, which creates a significant backlog. One thing to check - did you keep a copy of your completed DE 2501 form? If so, you could potentially file online now using the same information (though you'd need to indicate it's a duplicate claim). This sometimes works as a backup method when paper claims are delayed. Also, double-check that your doctor completed ALL required fields on their portion. A single missing field can cause delays of several additional weeks.

I do have a copy! I didn't know I could file online after submitting paper. Would that cause problems having two applications? I'll double check with my doctor about their portion too.

It's a bit of a gray area. Technically you should wait for the paper claim to process, but many claimants do submit online after long paper delays. If you do file online, make sure to indicate it's a duplicate claim so they don't think you're trying to get double benefits. The system usually catches duplicates, but this sometimes expedites getting your original claim located and processed.

my neighbor works at EDD and says they have HUGE backlogs right now bc they had budget cuts and laid off a bunch of staff who used to process paper forms. she says call and be super nice and sometimes they can find your form in the stack and move it up. dont be mean tho or they'll put you at the bottom lol

Thanks for the insider info. I'll definitely be nice if I can ever get someone on the phone! Those budget cuts explain a lot.

Quick update on timeframes based on recent data: For paper claims submitted in Q2 2025, EDD internal targets are: - Initial processing (scanning/data entry): 3-4 weeks - Review and verification: 1-2 weeks - Payment processing after approval: 5-7 business days So your claim should theoretically be in the review stage now if everything is on schedule. The challenge is that they're currently operating with about 75% of the staff they need for paper processing due to budget constraints mentioned by others.

Thank you for these specific timeframes! That's really helpful. I'm going to try calling again tomorrow morning right when they open. Fingers crossed I get through.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning after using that Claimyr service someone recommended (it actually worked!). The representative confirmed they received my paper claim on July 8th and it's currently in processing. She said there was nothing obviously wrong with it, but they're just backed up. She flagged it for expedited review due to financial hardship. Thanks everyone for your help and advice!
