EDD SDI claim stuck in limbo after signature mistake - no updates for 5 weeks!

I'm at my wit's end with this EDD nightmare! My husband had surgery on June 28th and we filed his SDI claim electronically on August 3rd. His doctor submitted their part right away, but we just found out 2 weeks ago that we missed ONE signature on the form. There was no option to upload the correction online, so we overnight mailed the corrected form on August 19th. It's now been over 5 weeks since we initially filed, and the EDD website still shows no update whatsoever - just 'pending review'. My husband has called at least 20 times and either gets disconnected or can't get through to a real person. We've completely drained our savings and credit cards are maxing out. Our mortgage payment is due next week and we have NOTHING. Does anyone know how to actually reach a human at EDD? Or how to expedite a claim that's stuck in processing? I'm seriously panicking here.

I had a similar issue with a missing signature last year. Unfortunately, the paper forms they receive by mail can take 10-14 business days just to be scanned into their system, and that's before anyone actually reviews them. The best way to get help is to call right when they open at 8:00 AM. Keep calling even if you get a busy signal. I had to try about 30 times before I got through, but once I did, they were able to help resolve my issue in minutes.

Thank you for responding! We've been trying the 8AM call strategy but no luck yet. 30 attempts is insane but I guess that's what we'll have to do. Do you happen to remember which number worked best for you? We've been calling the main one on the website.

have u tried the online message center?? somtimes they respond faster there than on phone. also did u check if the doctor actually submitted everything correctly? my doc said they did but turns out they never sent in the form!! wasted 3 weeks for nothing

Yes, we've sent 3 messages through the portal with no response. And we did confirm with the doctor's office that they submitted everything correctly - they even showed us confirmation of submission. That's why we're so frustrated that one missing signature is holding everything up!

I work in HR and deal with disability claims regularly. Here's what you should do: 1. Continue calling first thing in the morning, but also try calling between 4:00-4:45 PM as this is often when their queue is clearing out. 2. When you call, make sure you have the claim number, your husband's social security number, and the date the original claim was filed readily available. 3. In the meantime, contact your husband's employer to see if they offer any supplemental disability coverage that might provide emergency assistance while waiting for SDI. 4. The EDD does have an expedited processing option for financial hardship cases. When you do reach someone, specifically mention your financial situation (mortgage due, depleted savings) and ask if you qualify for expedited processing. The signature issue is unfortunately very common, but once they process the corrected form, they should backdate the payments to his eligibility date.

Thank you so much for these detailed suggestions! I didn't know about trying late afternoon calls or the expedited processing option. He's self-employed so no employer coverage, but we'll definitely mention the financial hardship when we finally reach someone. It's such a relief to know they'll backdate the payments.

THE ENTIRE SYSTEM IS BROKEN BY DESIGN!!!!! I waited 9 WEEKS for my claim last winter and nearly lost my apartment. They make it IMPOSSIBLE to reach anyone because they're UNDERSTAFFED and UNDERTRAINED. My neighbor works for the state (not EDD) and says they literally throw away mail sometimes when they get too backlogged!!! I'm still fighting an "overpayment" from 6 months ago that was THEIR mistake!!

While I understand your frustration, I don't think they're throwing away mail. The EDD processes thousands of claims daily, and most eventually get resolved. The backlog is definitely real though, especially since the pandemic. They never fully recovered their staffing levels.

Have you tried using Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to an EDD representative without spending hours redialing. I was skeptical at first, but I was desperate after trying for two weeks to reach someone about my denied claim. They got me connected to an actual EDD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd that shows how it works. Their website is claimyr.com - it basically saves you from the endless redial nightmare. The representative I reached was able to fix my issue immediately once I actually talked to them.

Does this really work? I'm in a similar situation and would pay anything to not have to keep calling for hours every day.

wait im confused... is this for state disability or unemployment? cuz they have different phone numbers and websites. my boyfriends on disabilty for his back injury and it only took like 10 days to get approved

This is definitely for State Disability Insurance (SDI), not unemployment. Your boyfriend was extremely lucky with that 10-day approval! From what I'm reading in these forums, that's not the norm at all, especially if there are any issues with the paperwork.

One thing that might help is contacting your state assembly member or senator's office. They often have staff dedicated to helping constituents with EDD issues. I was stuck in limbo for 6 weeks with my pregnancy disability claim last year, and my assembly member's office contacted EDD on my behalf. My claim was processed within 3 business days after their intervention. Most representatives have a form on their website specifically for constituent services. Just Google "[your city] state assembly member" to find yours. They can often work magic when regular channels fail.

That's brilliant! I hadn't even considered reaching out to our representatives. I'll look up our assembly member right now. Thank you so much for this suggestion - it gives me hope that we might be able to resolve this without waiting another month.

Just a quick update - I checked with a colleague who handles complex disability cases. She mentioned that in cases with signature issues, sometimes the claim gets placed in a special queue for manual review. When you do reach someone, specifically ask if the claim is in the "ARTU" (Additional Review and Technical Unit) queue. If it is, request that they check if all documents have been received and processed. Sometimes claims get stuck there even after the corrected documents arrive.

Thank you for the follow-up! I've never heard of the ARTU queue before. I'll definitely ask about this when we finally reach someone. I'm taking notes on all these suggestions. This forum has been more helpful than anything on the official EDD website.

UPDATE: We finally got through! Using the advice from this thread, we called at 8:00 AM sharp, and after 17 attempts, my husband got connected to a representative. Turns out they did receive our corrected form, but it was sitting in a backlog waiting to be processed. The rep expedited our claim due to financial hardship and said we should see movement within 2-3 business days! She also mentioned payments would be backdated to the end of the waiting period. Huge relief! Thank you all for your help and suggestions!
