EDD Payment Method Update Error - Can't Change Direct Deposit Info
Hey everyone, I'm having trouble updating my payment method for my unemployment benefits. I've tried everything I can think of but I just can't seem to figure it out. Has anyone else run into this issue? Any tips on how to get it sorted out? I'm worried about not receiving my payments correctly.

Ugh, I feel your pain! The unemployment system is such a mess. I had the same problem last month. Have you tried calling their helpline? It took me forever to get through, but they were able to help me update my info.

•Pro tip: call right when they open in the morning. That's how I finally got through after weeks of trying!

Have you tried updating it through the online portal? Sometimes it's easier than dealing with phone calls.

•Yeah, I tried that first but kept getting an error message. The website is so glitchy!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

•$20 to actually talk to a human? Worth every penny if you ask me 💯

Here's what worked for me when I had this issue: 1. Log out of your account completely 2. Clear your browser cache and cookies 3. Log back in and try updating your payment info again 4. If that doesn't work, try using a different browser or device 5. As a last resort, you might need to create a new password. Sometimes that resets things on their end. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need any more details.

Hey OP, have you tried reaching out to your local assemblymember or state senator? Sometimes their office can help push things through with EDD.

•I hadn't thought of that! Great idea, I'll look into it. Thanks!

•Can confirm this works. My rep's office got my issue sorted in like 2 days after months of nothing from EDD.

I had this exact same issue a few months ago! What finally worked for me was updating my payment info during off-peak hours (like late at night or early morning when fewer people are using the system). The EDD website seems to handle updates better when there's less traffic. Also, make sure you're using the "Update Payment Method" option specifically, not trying to edit your profile general info. Sometimes they're in different sections and one works while the other doesn't. Hope this helps - I know how stressful it is when you're worried about your payments!

•This is super helpful advice! I never thought about trying during off-peak hours. That makes total sense that there would be less server load. I'm definitely going to try this tonight around 2-3 AM when hopefully nobody else is on the system. Thanks for the tip about using the specific "Update Payment Method" option too - I think I might have been going through the wrong section this whole time! 🤞

I've been dealing with this exact same issue for the past two weeks! What's really frustrating is that the error messages aren't even helpful - they just say "unable to process request" without any explanation. I tried updating during different times of day, different browsers, even had my friend try from their computer thinking it might be something on my end. Nothing worked. Finally got through to someone on the phone yesterday (took literally 4 hours of calling) and they told me there's been a known issue with their payment update system that they're "working on fixing." No timeline of course. The rep was able to update my info manually over the phone though, so that might be your best bet if you can actually get through to someone. Hang in there!

•Oh wow, 4 hours of calling?! That's insane but honestly not surprising given how backed up their system is. I'm glad you finally got through and were able to get it sorted manually. It's so typical that they have a "known issue" with no timeline for a fix - like, this is people's livelihoods we're talking about here! Thanks for sharing that the phone rep could do it manually though, that gives me hope. I guess I better clear my schedule for a marathon calling session 😅 Did you have any luck with specific times of day that seemed better for getting through?

I'm going through the exact same nightmare right now! Been trying for over a week to update my direct deposit info after switching banks. The website keeps timing out or giving me vague error messages like "system temporarily unavailable." I've tried all the usual troubleshooting - different browsers, clearing cache, trying at different times of day. Nothing works. It's so stressful because my old bank account is already closed and I'm worried my next payment will bounce back. Has anyone had success with mailing in a paper form instead of doing it online? I saw something about that option but wasn't sure if it's faster than waiting to get through on the phone. This whole system is such a mess - how is it 2025 and we're still dealing with technology from the stone age?

•I feel your pain! The paper form option might actually be worth trying - I've heard mixed results but some people say it's been faster than the phone route lately. You can download the "Change of Address/Direct Deposit" form (DE 1444CD) from their website and mail it in. Just make sure to include a voided check from your new account. The processing time is supposedly 7-10 business days, which honestly might be faster than getting through on the phone at this point. Also, definitely call your old bank to make sure they know to expect a potential returned payment - sometimes they can hold it for a few extra days while you sort this out. This whole situation is ridiculous though, you're right that the technology feels ancient! 🤦♀️

I went through this exact same headache about 6 months ago! What finally worked for me was a combination of things: First, I tried updating my info at around 3 AM when the system had way less traffic - that alone made a huge difference. But what really sealed the deal was making sure I had all my bank info entered exactly as it appears on my bank statements (including any spaces or dashes in the account number). Apparently their system is super picky about formatting. Also, don't give up on the phone option - I know it's brutal, but I found that calling right at 8:00 AM sharp on Tuesdays or Wednesdays gave me the best chance of getting through. Took about 45 minutes on hold but way better than the 3+ hours I was spending other days. The rep was actually really helpful once I got through and confirmed my update went through properly. Hang in there OP, you'll get it sorted! The system is definitely broken but there are ways to work around it.

•This is really helpful advice! The formatting tip about entering bank info exactly as it appears on statements is something I never would have thought of. I've been copying and pasting from my online banking which might have different formatting than my actual statements. And 3 AM definitely makes sense for less traffic - I've been trying during normal business hours when everyone else is probably doing the same thing. Thanks for the specific timing suggestion about Tuesday/Wednesday mornings at 8 AM too, I'll definitely try that. It's crazy that we have to become experts in gaming a broken system just to update basic info, but I really appreciate you sharing what worked! 🙏

I'm dealing with this same frustrating issue right now! Been trying to update my payment method for over a week with no luck. The error messages are so vague and unhelpful - just keeps saying "unable to process request" without any explanation of what's actually wrong. I've tried different browsers, cleared my cache, even tried from my phone, but nothing works. It's so stressful not knowing if my payments will go through correctly. Reading through all these comments though, it sounds like this is a widespread problem with their system. I'm going to try the late night approach someone mentioned and also attempt calling on Tuesday morning at 8 AM sharp. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - at least I know I'm not alone in this mess!

•You're definitely not alone in this! I just joined this community because I'm having the exact same problem. It's actually somewhat reassuring (though still incredibly frustrating) to see so many others dealing with this. I've been trying to update my direct deposit for my new job's credit union for almost two weeks now. The "unable to process request" error is driving me crazy - like, give us SOME kind of useful information about what's going wrong! I'm going to try the 3 AM trick tonight and see if that helps. Has anyone had luck reaching out to their local representatives like someone mentioned earlier? I'm getting desperate enough to try anything at this point. Thanks for sharing your experience - it helps to know this isn't just me being incompetent with technology! 😅

I'm having the exact same issue! Been trying for 3 weeks now to update my bank info after my credit union changed their routing number. The online system keeps giving me that useless "unable to process request" error no matter what I try. I've attempted all the browser tricks, different times of day, even had my tech-savvy cousin try from his computer thinking maybe it was user error on my part. Nope - system is just broken. What's really concerning me is that I got a notice that my old routing number will stop working next week, so I'm running out of time here. I tried calling but gave up after 2 hours on hold yesterday. Going to try the 3 AM approach tonight and also attempt that Tuesday 8 AM calling strategy someone mentioned. It's honestly ridiculous that in 2025 we're dealing with a system this broken for something as basic as updating payment information. These are people's livelihoods at stake! Thanks to everyone sharing their experiences though - at least I know it's not just me going crazy trying to figure this out.

•Oh no, having a deadline like that makes this so much more stressful! I'm in a similar boat - my bank merger is happening next month and I need to get this sorted before then. The fact that you've had your tech-savvy cousin try it too really confirms this is a system-wide issue, not user error. I'd definitely recommend trying both the late-night approach and the Tuesday morning calling strategy. Also, since you have that hard deadline coming up, it might be worth looking into that paper form option someone mentioned earlier (DE 1444CD) as a backup plan - mail it in while also trying the other methods. That way you have multiple attempts going simultaneously. The whole situation is absolutely maddening, but we'll get through this! Keep us posted on what works for you! 🤞

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! Been stuck in this loop for about 10 days trying to update my direct deposit info. The most frustrating part is how the error messages tell you absolutely nothing useful - just "system error" or "unable to process" with zero explanation of what's actually wrong or how to fix it. I've tried literally everything I can think of: different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari), clearing all my cookies and cache, trying from my laptop vs my phone, even asked my roommate to try logging in from their device with my info. Nothing works. The system just seems completely broken for payment updates right now. Reading through all these comments is actually really helpful though - sounds like this is a known widespread issue and not something I'm doing wrong. I'm definitely going to try the 3 AM approach tonight when there's less traffic on their servers. Also going to set my alarm for 7:55 AM this Tuesday and try calling right when they open. It's crazy that we have to become system hackers just to update basic banking information in 2025! Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and tips - makes me feel less alone in this bureaucratic nightmare 😅

•I'm so glad I found this thread! I've been dealing with the exact same nightmare for the past 2 weeks and was starting to think I was losing my mind. Just tried to update my payment info after switching to a new bank and keep getting that same useless "unable to process request" error. It's honestly a relief to see I'm not the only one - this seems like a major system-wide issue that EDD really needs to fix ASAP. I'm definitely going to try the 3 AM trick tonight and also attempt calling Tuesday morning at 8 AM sharp. Thanks for confirming that even trying from different devices didn't work - saves me from going crazy testing every possible combination! We shouldn't have to become tech detectives just to update our bank info. Fingers crossed one of these workarounds helps us all get through this mess! 🤞

I'm going through this exact same issue right now! Been trying to update my direct deposit info for almost two weeks with zero success. The EDD website just keeps giving me that frustrating "unable to process request" error message every single time, no matter what browser I use or when I try. What's really stressing me out is that I closed my old bank account last month when I switched to a credit union, so I'm worried about what happens when my next payment tries to go through. I've been reading through all the suggestions here and I'm definitely going to try the 3 AM approach tonight when there's less traffic on their servers - that actually makes a lot of sense! I'm also going to attempt calling on Tuesday morning right at 8 AM like someone suggested. I know it's going to be a long wait, but at this point I'd rather spend hours on hold than keep hitting this brick wall with their broken website. It's honestly insane that in 2025 we're dealing with a system this outdated and unreliable for something as basic as updating payment information. These are people's lifelines we're talking about! Thanks to everyone who's shared their experiences and tips - it really helps to know this is a widespread system issue and not just me doing something wrong. I'll report back if any of these methods work! 🤞
