EDD Money Network fraud charges - will they actually give provisional credit after 10 days?
So my EDD benefits got loaded onto my Money Network card last Friday ($785) and I checked my balance Monday morning to find THREE transactions I never made at gas stations in Sacramento (I live in San Diego!). They drained almost everything! I immediately called the fraud department and they said they're starting an investigation that would take 10 business days, after which I'd get a 'provisional credit' while they continue investigating. Has anyone actually gotten this provisional credit when promised? I'm seriously stressing because rent is due next week and this was supposed to cover it. Should I trust them or keep calling? The rep seemed confident but I've heard horror stories about these cards.

Yes, I got my provisional credit exactly 10 business days after reporting fraud on my Money Network card earlier this year. Just make sure you've completed all their requirements - signed the fraud affidavit they send and returned it promptly. The provisional credit will show up as a deposit transaction in your account. Once they complete the full investigation (took about 45 days in my case), they'll make that credit permanent if they find in your favor.

•Thanks for sharing your experience! The rep didn't mention anything about an affidavit though? Do they email that or mail it? I'm worried I'll miss something important and delay the whole process.

•Omg that's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did you appeal their decision or anything? This is so stressful.

The Money Network provisional credit process generally works as described, but you need to be proactive. Here's what you should do: 1. Call again and specifically ask if you need to complete a fraud affidavit - sometimes reps forget to mention this crucial step 2. Document everything - transaction dates, times you called, who you spoke with 3. Check your online account daily for updates 4. If you don't see the provisional credit by day 11, call immediately In most cases, they do honor the 10-day timeline for provisional credit. The permanent resolution can take 45-90 days, but the provisional credit should allow you to pay your rent while they investigate.

•Thank you for the detailed advice! I'll definitely call again tomorrow to ask about the affidavit. I've been taking notes of everything so far, glad to know that's the right approach.

OMG SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!!! Except in my case they used my card at some online shopping site I never heard of. The whole thing is RIDICULOUS. Why doesn't EDD use better security?? I've been waiting 8 days for my provisional credit and checking my account obsessively. This is giving me so much anxiety I can barely sleep. Did they at least give you a new card?

•Yes, they're sending a new card that should arrive in 7-10 business days. But that doesn't help with getting the money back! I'm checking my account constantly too. This whole system seems designed to fail.

My cousin had this happen last month... he got his provisional credit on day 10 exactly. So they do follow through. But the real problem is how easy it is for people to steal from these cards in the first place! Has anyone switched to direct deposit instead? Wondering if that's safer?

•Direct deposit is DEFINITELY safer. I switched to direct deposit about 4 months ago and have had zero issues since. The Money Network cards are notorious for fraud because they don't have the same security features as regular bank cards. To switch, just log into UI Online and go to Payment Preferences. Takes about 2 minutes and your next payment will go straight to your bank account.

If you need to contact EDD directly about this (which might be a good idea to document your fraud case there too), try Claimyr. I spent days trying to get thru to EDD after my card was hacked and kept getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message. Used Claimyr.com and got connected to a rep in about 25 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km that shows how it works. Way less stressful than repeatedly calling and getting nowhere.

•does this actually work? seems sketchy... has anyone else tried it?

•I've used it twice and it worked both times. Not sketchy at all - they just help you get through the phone system. Definitely worth it when you're desperate to reach someone.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you CHANGE YOUR PIN and PASSWORD on everything related to your EDD account!! My friend didn't do this right away and they got hit TWICE with fraud charges!! Also check if any of your mailing address info was changed by the fraudsters. They sometimes change your address to intercept the new card!

•Good point! I already changed my PIN but I should double check my address info too. Didn't even think about that possibility. This is all so exhausting.

One more tip - if day 10 comes and you don't see the provisional credit, don't wait. Call immediately and reference your case number. Sometimes their system doesn't process the credit automatically. In my experience, if you call and point it out, they can usually push it through while you're on the phone. The squeaky wheel gets the grease with Money Network customer service.

•I'll definitely do that! My 10th day should be next Thursday, so I'll call first thing if I don't see the credit. Thanks for the advice!

I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago - fraudulent charges at gas stations while my card was in my wallet! The good news is that Money Network did honor their 10-day provisional credit promise in my case. Here's what helped me get through it: 1. Keep calling every 2-3 days to check status and show you're actively following up 2. Screenshot everything - your account balance, the fraudulent transactions, any emails they send 3. If you have any legitimate receipts from around the same time period, keep those handy as proof you weren't in Sacramento The waiting is absolutely nerve-wracking, especially when rent is due. I ended up having to borrow money from family just in case, but the provisional credit did come through on day 10. Hang in there - most people do get their money back, it's just a stressful process. And definitely switch to direct deposit after this is resolved!

This is such a nightmare scenario and I feel for you! I had fraud charges on my Money Network card about 8 months ago (someone used it at ATMs in LA while I was at work in the Bay Area). I want to give you some hope - I DID get my provisional credit on day 10 exactly as promised, and the final investigation ruled in my favor after about 6 weeks. A few things that helped me: - I called on day 3 just to confirm they had all my info correct and that seemed to keep my case active - They did email me a fraud affidavit form that I had to fill out and email back - definitely ask about this when you call next - I kept a detailed log of every call (date, time, rep name, what they told me) The stress is real though - I barely slept those 10 days waiting for the provisional credit. But in most legitimate fraud cases like yours (where the charges are clearly in a different city), they do follow through. Just stay on top of it and don't be afraid to call if you don't see that credit by day 11. You've got this!

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same thing and actually got their money back. I'm definitely going to start keeping a detailed log of my calls like you suggested - that's a great idea. The stress really is overwhelming, especially when you're already dealing with unemployment and then this happens on top of it. I'm on day 4 now so I think I'll call tomorrow to double-check everything is on track. Your story gives me hope that this will work out!

I'm so sorry this happened to you - fraud on these EDD cards is way too common and it's incredibly stressful when you're already dealing with unemployment. I haven't personally dealt with Money Network fraud, but I've been following these threads for months and wanted to share what I've observed from other people's experiences: The majority of people who report legitimate fraud (like your situation where charges happened in a completely different city) DO get their provisional credit on day 10 as promised. The cases where people seem to have trouble are usually when the fraud is harder to prove or when they miss some step in the process. Based on what others have shared, definitely call back and specifically ask about the fraud affidavit - it sounds like that's a crucial step that some reps forget to mention. Also, since you're in San Diego and the charges were in Sacramento, that geographic distance should work strongly in your favor during their investigation. I know the waiting is torture, especially with rent due, but try to hang in there. Document everything like others have suggested, and don't hesitate to call if you don't see that provisional credit by day 11. Most people in your situation do get their money back - it's just an awful process to go through. Sending you good vibes that this gets resolved quickly!

•Thank you so much for taking the time to share what you've observed from other cases! It really helps to hear that most people in situations like mine do end up getting their money back. The geographic distance thing is a good point - I mean, there's no way I could have been in Sacramento buying gas when I was at home in San Diego! I'm definitely going to call tomorrow about that fraud affidavit since multiple people have mentioned it now. It's frustrating that the first rep didn't tell me about it, but I guess that's just how it goes with customer service sometimes. Really appreciate the encouragement - this whole situation has been such a nightmare on top of already being unemployed. It's reassuring to know there's a community here where people actually help each other through this stuff!

I'm really sorry you're going through this - having your unemployment benefits stolen when you're already struggling is just devastating. I went through something similar about a year ago with my Money Network card (fraudulent charges at a Target in LA while I was home in Orange County). The good news is that I DID get my provisional credit exactly on day 10, and the final decision was in my favor after about 7 weeks. Here's what I learned from my experience: 1. Call back ASAP and ask specifically about the fraud affidavit - this seems to be a critical step that many reps don't mention upfront 2. When you call, ask for your case/reference number and write it down - you'll need this for all future calls 3. The fact that the charges happened in Sacramento while you're in San Diego is actually great evidence in your favor 4. Set a calendar reminder for day 11 - if you don't see the provisional credit by then, call immediately I know the anxiety is unbearable (I literally couldn't eat for days waiting for my provisional credit), but based on everything I've seen in this community, legitimate fraud cases like yours where there's clear geographic evidence usually get resolved in the victim's favor. The 10-day provisional credit timeline is generally honored for cases like this. Definitely consider switching to direct deposit once this is resolved - I made that switch immediately after getting my money back and haven't had any issues since. Hang in there, and feel free to update us on how it goes!

•Thank you for sharing your experience and all the detailed advice! It's so helpful to hear from someone who actually went through this and got their money back. I'm feeling a bit more optimistic now after reading everyone's responses. I'm definitely calling first thing tomorrow morning to ask about that fraud affidavit - it seems like that's a crucial step that multiple people have mentioned. The geographic evidence point is reassuring too - there's literally no way I could have been in Sacramento when I was home in San Diego! I've already started keeping notes of everything, and I'll make sure to get that case number tomorrow. Setting a calendar reminder for day 11 is a great idea. This whole situation has been such a nightmare, but knowing that others have been through it and came out okay on the other side really helps. I'll definitely update everyone once I hear back about the affidavit and hopefully when I get that provisional credit. Thanks again for taking the time to help!

I'm so sorry this happened to you! I went through almost the exact same thing last year - fraudulent charges on my Money Network card while I was nowhere near where they occurred. The stress is absolutely terrible, especially when you're already dealing with unemployment. Here's my experience: I DID get the provisional credit on day 10 exactly as they promised. The key things that helped me were: 1. **Call tomorrow and ask specifically about the fraud affidavit** - this is super important and many reps don't mention it initially. They'll email it to you and you need to fill it out and send it back ASAP. 2. **Get your case/reference number** when you call - you'll need this for every future interaction. 3. **Document everything** - dates, times, rep names, what they told you. Take screenshots of your account showing the fraudulent transactions. 4. **The geographic evidence is huge in your favor** - Sacramento vs San Diego makes this a pretty clear-cut case of fraud. The waiting period is absolutely agonizing (I checked my account obsessively every few hours), but in legitimate cases like yours where the fraud is obvious, they generally do follow through. My final investigation took about 6 weeks and ruled completely in my favor. Also, once this is resolved, DEFINITELY switch to direct deposit. I made that change immediately after and have had zero issues since. These Money Network cards are way too vulnerable to fraud. Hang in there - based on everything I've seen in this community, cases with clear geographic evidence like yours almost always get resolved in the victim's favor. Keep us posted on how the call goes tomorrow!
