EDD Money Network card daily withdrawal limit is killing me - anyone find workarounds?
Just switched from direct deposit to the Money Network card after my bank account got compromised. Biggest mistake ever! The $600 daily ATM withdrawal limit is making it impossible to pay my rent (which is $2300). I tried transferring to my new bank account but it's been 'processing' for 5 days now! What's the point of getting benefits if you can't actually USE the money when you need it? BofA debit cards they used to give us were WAY better and faster. Does anyone know if there are ways around this ridiculous limit? Or how to make transfers actually WORK? Starting to think someone at EDD is getting kickbacks from these Money Network folks for this garbage service.

I've been dealing with the Money Network card for about 8 months now. The withdrawal limits are frustrating, but there are some workarounds: 1. You can do cash-back transactions at grocery stores in addition to ATM withdrawals to get more cash in a single day 2. For paying rent, see if your landlord will accept multiple payments 3. For bank transfers, I found that transfers initiated through your bank's side (pulling the money) process faster than pushing it from the Money Network side The transfer delays are definitely annoying but in my experience they always go through eventually. Just takes patience, unfortunately.

•Thanks for the tips! I tried the cash back at the store but they have a $100 limit. My landlord is already annoyed about splitting payments. I'll try initiating from my bank's side instead. Just frustrating that we have to jump through all these hoops.

•NOT EVERYONE HAS THE LUXURY OF PLANNING AHEAD. Some of us are living paycheck to paycheck and our certification weeks don't align perfectly with when bills are due!!! My car broke down YESTERDAY and I needed the full $1400 for repairs TODAY but couldn't get it because of these stupid limits. So now I can't get to work and might lose my part-time job. But sure, I should have "planned ahead" for my car randomly breaking down. 🙄

I work for a financial counseling nonprofit and we see this issue all the time with the Money Network cards. Here are the actual limits you should know about: - $600 ATM cash withdrawal per day - Up to $1,000 cash back from point-of-sale transactions per day - $8,000 daily purchase limit for most cards - Bank transfers typically take 3-5 business days (not calendar days) For paying rent, you can also see if your landlord accepts: 1. Money orders purchased with the card 2. Payment through services like PayPal/Venmo (linked to your Money Network card) 3. Writing a check from the Money Network checkbook (you can request one) Many landlords are now accepting these alternative payment methods because of how common these prepaid cards have become.

•I had no idea about the checkbook option! Where exactly do you request that? The Money Network website is so confusing.

yeah the BofA card was better. my cousin worked at edd for 5 years and she said they switched to money network cuz it was cheaper for the state but worse for us. classic goverment move lol

•They switched because there was massive fraud with the BofA cards during COVID. I remember reading somewhere that California lost billions to unemployment fraud because the BofA cards were too easy to scam. That's why they went with Money Network even though it's more restrictive.

When I had issues with my Money Network card last month, I was trying to reach EDD for THREE DAYS just to verify my identity to get my money. Kept getting that stupid "we're experiencing high call volume" message. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual EDD rep in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep was able to verify my identity and also explained some of the Money Network limits. Apparently you can request higher daily limits if you call Money Network directly and explain your situation (like needing to pay rent). Doesn't always work but worth trying!

•Thanks for the tip about Claimyr! I've been trying to reach someone about this for days. And I'll definitely try calling Money Network to ask about higher limits. Worth a shot!

One thing nobody mentioned yet - you can actually use the Money Network card to pay bills directly through their bill pay feature. I use it to pay my rent and utilities without having to withdraw cash or transfer to my bank. It's not perfect but it works for regular monthly payments.

•I looked into that but my landlord is an individual (not a company) and doesn't show up in their bill pay system. Seems like it only works for certain companies?

•That's terrible! For anyone reading this - if your card gets lost/stolen, you can request expedited shipping for the replacement. It costs $10 but you'll get it in 3 business days instead of waiting weeks. Learned this the hard way.

Update for everyone: EDD is supposed to be launching a new direct deposit system in mid-2025 that will allow claimants to receive benefits directly to their bank accounts without using Money Network cards at all. This was announced in their latest stakeholder meeting. Not helpful for current issues, but at least there's a change coming eventually.

•ABOUT TIME!!! Every other state has had modern direct deposit for years. California is always behind on implementing basic technology for unemployment. But knowing EDD, the "mid-2025" timeline will probably turn into 2027. 🙄
