Can I transfer EDD funds via Money Network app without physical card?

So I just got approved for UI benefits (finally!) after waiting 5 weeks, and I can see my payments are being loaded onto a Money Network card. The EDD notification says my card has been mailed, but I haven't received it yet. My rent is due in 3 days and I really need to move that money to my bank account ASAP. Can I set up the Money Network app and transfer the funds before I physically have the card in hand? Has anyone done this successfully? The EDD website is super vague about this specific situation. Thanks in advance!

Ughhh that's what I was worried about. Do you know how long it typically takes for the card to arrive after approval?

Unfortunately, you need the physical Money Network card to set up the app and access your funds. The card has specific information on it that you'll need during the registration process. There's no way to bypass this requirement since it's a security measure. When your card arrives, you can then download the app, register your account, and transfer funds to your bank account. The card usually arrives within 5-10 business days after your first payment is approved.

Thanks for the detailed info! That's frustrating since I can see the money is there. I'll just have to explain to my landlord. Do you know if there's any way to expedite the card delivery?

I went through this same situation last month. You definitely need the physical card first - it has a unique 16-digit card number, expiration date, and security code that's required to set up your Money Network account. Once you have the card, though, transfers to your bank account are pretty quick (usually 1-2 business days). If you need the money urgently, you can also use the physical card immediately at ATMs or for purchases as soon as you activate it. My card took exactly 7 business days to arrive after my first payment was posted. The envelope is very plain and easy to miss - it doesn't say EDD on it, so keep an eye out!

You ABSOLUTLEY can't do ANYTHING until you get that card!!! I tried everything possible last year, even called Money Network customer service FOUR TIMES and they kept saying the same thing - need the physical card! It's ridiculous that we can see our benefits just sitting there but can't touch them! The whole system is designed to make things harder for people who need help!!!! 😡

I actually managed to get my card expedited when I was in a similar situation. I called Money Network directly (not EDD) and explained my urgent situation. They charged me $15 for overnight shipping of a replacement card, but I got it next day. Worth the money in my case since I needed it for rent. But yeah, you definitely need the physical card to set up the app and account. There's no way around that part. The card has your account and routing number printed on it which you need to set up transfers.

That's super helpful! I'm going to try calling Money Network right now. $15 is totally worth it if I can get the card faster.

One other option - if you're struggling to reach Money Network directly (their customer service can be swamped), you might want to try Claimyr (claimyr.com). I used them to get through to an EDD rep when I had issues with my claim, and they were able to connect me within 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km An EDD agent can sometimes help expedite the card or at least give you precise information about when it was mailed. Worth a shot if you're in a time crunch!

Thank you! I just tried Money Network but got disconnected after waiting 45 minutes. I'll check out Claimyr because I really need to talk to someone who can help today.

You're absolutely right - this is outdated information that many people still believe. Bank of America stopped issuing EDD debit cards in July 2021 when California switched to Money Network. Any advice about BofA and EDD cards is no longer applicable.

UPDATE: Just wanted to share what worked for me! I used Claimyr to reach an EDD rep this morning, and they confirmed my card was mailed 3 days ago. The rep also gave me the direct Money Network number for expedited shipping (855-282-6161). Called them, paid $15 for overnight shipping, and they're sending a new card that should arrive tomorrow! The regular card will probably still come in the mail too, but this way I'm covered. Thanks for all the advice everyone!

@profile3 - Absolutely! I actually just got my card today via overnight shipping and set everything up. Here's what I did for direct deposit: 1. Downloaded the Money Network app 2. Registered using the card number, expiration, and security code 3. Created account with username/password 4. Went to Transfers section 5. Selected "Transfer to Bank Account" 6. Added my checking account info 7. Set up recurring transfers for future deposits The first transfer says it'll take 2-3 business days. For anyone else reading this - definitely set up direct deposit right away to avoid this issue in the future!

This is perfect info! I'd also recommend keeping your card somewhere safe even after setting up direct deposit. Sometimes there can be glitches with the automatic transfers, and having the card as backup is helpful.
