EDD phone system nightmare - can't file new claim online or by phone for 2 weeks

I'm at my wit's end trying to file a new unemployment claim! My previous job ended last month (manufacturing sector), and I've been trying to file a new claim for TWO WEEKS now. The online system keeps giving me an error message saying I need to call to complete my application due to 'identity verification issues.' But calling is IMPOSSIBLE! I've tried at least 40-50 times each day, starting right when they open at 8AM. Either I get the 'we're experiencing high call volume' message and it hangs up, or I get put on hold only to be disconnected after 20-30 minutes. I've tried calling different times of day, using different phones, even had my sister try calling for me. Nothing works! My rent is due next week and I'm starting to panic. Does ANYONE know a trick to actually get through to a human being at EDD? I feel like I'm trapped in a bureaucratic black hole!

UPDATE: I finally got through today! Used a combination of the tips from this thread - called at 8:01am exactly, used the 1-2-4 prompt sequence, and was on hold for about 45 minutes but finally spoke to someone. The rep confirmed it was indeed a name change issue causing the verification problem. For anyone else with this problem, persistence is key! Thank you everyone for your help!

congrats!! how long did they say it would take to process ur claim now that u got through?

0 coins

They said 7-10 business days for processing, then another week for the first payment once I do my first certification. Longer than I hoped but at least it's moving forward now!

That's such great news that you finally got through! Your post was so relatable - I'm dealing with a similar situation right now where I've been trying to file for disability benefits and keep hitting the same phone system walls. The 1-2-4 prompt tip is gold, I'm definitely going to try that tomorrow morning. It's crazy how these government phone systems seem designed to frustrate people into giving up. Thanks for sharing your success story and what actually worked - gives the rest of us hope that persistence really does pay off eventually!

Filing new UI claim on expiration date - can I do it today or wait until tomorrow?

So my benefit year officially expires today (March 15th) according to my UI Online account. I just logged in to certify for my last week and noticed there's already an option to file a new claim showing up. I'm confused because I thought I had to wait until the current benefit year was completely over before filing a new one. Can I actually submit the new claim application today, or should I wait until tomorrow or even Monday? I don't want to mess anything up or have my new claim denied because I filed a few hours too early. Has anyone dealt with this before? I've been on unemployment for almost the full year after my company downsized last spring, and I really can't afford any gaps in payments right now.

My sister workes for EDD she says file it now dont wait

Sure your "sister" works for EDD. Everyone on the internet has a cousin or sister who conveniently works wherever they need to make a point. 🙄

whatever man just trying to help

Update: I went ahead and filed my new claim today! The system accepted it with no problems. It says my new benefit year starts tomorrow (March 16th) just like you all said. Now fingers crossed the processing doesn't take too long. Thanks everyone for your help!

Great! Just remember to keep certifying every two weeks even if your new claim is still processing. If your new claim is approved, they'll pay you for those weeks retroactively. And if there are any issues or it's taking longer than 3 weeks, definitely try to contact EDD directly to check on the status.

Awesome, glad it worked out! I'm in a similar situation with my benefit year ending next month, so this whole thread has been super helpful. Hope your processing goes smoothly and you don't hit any of those crazy delays some people mentioned.

EDD benefits running out with $2,000 left - can I get an extension after my balance is gone?

I started collecting unemployment back in August after being laid off from my retail management position. Looking at my UI Online account, I see I have about $2,000 left in my claim balance. At my weekly benefit amount, that's only going to last me another 5-6 weeks tops. I always thought unemployment benefits were good for a full year (12 months), but now I'm getting worried. Once my balance hits zero, can I apply for some kind of extension? Or am I just completely out of luck after that? Really need to know what to prepare for financially in the coming months.

I appreciate all the responses! I called EDD using the service someone suggested above and actually got through to a rep. The agent confirmed everything you all said - my benefits are limited to the claim balance amount (26 weeks max), and there are no extensions currently available. She suggested I contact my local America's Job Center for help with job search resources and possibly training opportunities. Definitely not the news I was hoping for, but at least I know where I stand now and can plan accordingly.

Glad you got through to someone! The America's Job Centers (formerly called One-Stop Career Centers) can actually be really helpful. They offer free resume help, job fairs, and sometimes even training programs that can be covered while you're still on unemployment. Definitely worth checking out before your benefits end.

I'm in a similar situation - just checked my balance and I have about $1,800 left which should last me maybe another month. This thread has been really eye-opening because I also thought I had a full year of benefits. I've been taking my time with the job search thinking I had plenty of runway, but now I realize I need to get serious ASAP. Has anyone had luck with temp agencies? I'm wondering if that might be a faster way to get some income flowing while I continue looking for something permanent.

EDD benefits ran out - can I get an extension in 2025 when no jobs are hiring?

I just hit my 6 month mark with regular UI benefits and my last payment is processing now. Not sure what I'm going to do because the job market in my industry (medical billing) is terrible right now. I've applied to 47 jobs in the last month, had 8 interviews, but keep getting rejected because companies want 5+ years experience even for entry-level positions. I completed a certification program in medical coding hoping it would make me more marketable, but that hasn't helped either. Does anyone know if California EDD offers any kind of extension beyond the standard 26 weeks? My rent just went up $200 and I'm honestly panicking about what happens next. Are there any special circumstances where they give you more time? Or any other programs I should apply for?

One important thing to remember: if you're receiving partial UI benefits from working part-time, make sure you're still doing your work search activities and certifying correctly. Many people make mistakes here and end up with conditional payments or worse, overpayment notices. Those work search requirements are still in effect (3 activities per week) even if you're working part-time hours. Just because you're working doesn't mean you can skip reporting your work search efforts during certification.

That's good to know. I've been documenting all my job applications and interviews, so I have plenty to report for the work search requirements. Definitely don't want to mess anything up and end up owing money back.

I'm in a similar situation - my benefits are about to run out next week and I'm terrified. The job market is brutal right now. One thing that might help is looking into community colleges that offer workforce development programs. Some have partnerships with employers and offer job placement assistance after completion. Also, don't forget about filing for CalFresh if you haven't already - at least that's one less expense to worry about while you're job hunting. The application process is pretty straightforward online and can help stretch whatever savings you have left. Hang in there!

EDD appeal hearing in 4 days - Where to physically drop off documents at Inland Office?

Got my EDD appeal date today but I'm totally panicking because I only have 4 days to submit all my evidence and documentation to the Appeals office! The notice says I need to get these papers to the 'Inland Office of Appeals' in Rancho Cucamonga, but when I try to find the actual physical location on Google Maps, nothing shows up - just a PO Box address. I want to hand-deliver my documents since mail might not get there in time, but I can't figure out where the building actually is. Has anyone been to this office in person? I have the phone number (909-987-2212) and fax number, but I really want to drop these off in person to make sure they're received before my hearing. This is for an appeal of my disqualification after they said I didn't report some income correctly, which is totally not true. I don't want to lose this appeal just because I couldn't find the building!

Hey! I just went through a similar appeal process last month and totally understand the panic. Here's what worked for me: I used the email option (appeals.office@cuiab.ca.gov) and got a confirmation reply within 24 hours. Make sure to put your case number in the subject line and attach everything as PDFs if possible. One thing I learned - they actually prefer electronic submissions now because it's faster for them to process. I was stressing about hand delivery too, but the email worked perfectly and I had proof of delivery. For your income reporting case, gather EVERYTHING - pay stubs, bank deposits, screenshots of what you certified, work schedules. I brought way more documentation than I thought I needed and it helped show the complete picture. The judge appreciated having all the details. Also, don't let the 4-day timeline freak you out too much - as long as you submit by the deadline, you're good. They're used to people submitting documents right up until the hearing date. You've got this!

Just wanted to add my recent experience since I went through almost the exact same thing in January! I had an income reporting appeal hearing with only 3 days to submit documents and was freaking out just like you. I ended up using both the email method (appeals.office@cuiab.ca.gov) AND faxing through FaxZero as backup. The email worked perfectly - I got an auto-reply confirmation immediately and then a human response the next day confirming they received everything. For the Rancho Cucamonga office, I actually did drive there just to see it for myself (anxiety got the better of me lol). It's definitely at 10525 Civic Center Drive in a big government complex. The building says "California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board" on it, not EDD. But honestly, emailing was so much easier and less stressful. One tip that really helped me: I organized everything chronologically and created a simple timeline document showing exactly what I reported to EDD each week versus what I actually earned. It made my case super clear to the judge. My hearing lasted maybe 20 minutes and I won! Don't stress too much - the judges deal with income reporting cases constantly and they understand the system can be confusing. Just be honest and have your documentation ready. You've got this!

@Melody Miles Thank you so much for sharing your experience! The timeline document idea is brilliant - I m'dealing with a similar income reporting issue and that sounds like exactly what I need to organize my case. Did you just create it in Word or use a specific format? Also really reassuring to hear that your hearing only took 20 minutes and that the judge was understanding. I ve'been losing sleep over this whole process but hearing these success stories is helping calm my nerves!
