EDD phone system nightmare - can't file new claim online or by phone for 2 weeks
I'm at my wit's end trying to file a new unemployment claim! My previous job ended last month (manufacturing sector), and I've been trying to file a new claim for TWO WEEKS now. The online system keeps giving me an error message saying I need to call to complete my application due to 'identity verification issues.' But calling is IMPOSSIBLE! I've tried at least 40-50 times each day, starting right when they open at 8AM. Either I get the 'we're experiencing high call volume' message and it hangs up, or I get put on hold only to be disconnected after 20-30 minutes. I've tried calling different times of day, using different phones, even had my sister try calling for me. Nothing works! My rent is due next week and I'm starting to panic. Does ANYONE know a trick to actually get through to a human being at EDD? I feel like I'm trapped in a bureaucratic black hole!

•Thanks for the suggestion! Which office did you go to? Did you need an appointment first or could you just walk in? The closest office to me is like 45 minutes away so I want to make sure it's worth the trip.

omg this is EXACTLY why i hate EDD!!! they make it IMPOSSIBLE to get through and then blame US when our claims aren't filed on time. i spent like 3 months trying to get mine fixed last year. the whole system is designed to make people give up!!

•I agree its frustrating but its just understaffed not some conspiracy. Actually if u try calling at 4:30pm right before they close sometimes u can get through cause most people give up by then. worked for me once

There are a few strategies that might help you get through on the phone: 1. Call exactly at 8:01am (not 8:00 - everyone calls then) 2. When the automated system starts, immediately press 1, then 2, then 4 (this routing often works better) 3. If you get the message that they're experiencing high call volumes, hang up and immediately redial 4. Try on Wednesday or Thursday - typically lower volume days 5. Make sure your phone has a full battery and you're in a good service area Alternatively, you can also try contacting your state representative's office. They often have dedicated EDD liaisons who can help escalate your case.

•Thank you for these specific tips! I haven't tried the 1-2-4 option yet, I'll definitely give that a shot tomorrow morning. And I didn't realize contacting my state rep was an option - that's really helpful to know if I still can't get through.

Have you tried Claimyr? It seriously saved me when I was in the same situation. It's a service that basically keeps calling EDD for you until it gets through, then connects you. I was skeptical but after wasting 2 weeks trying to call myself, I tried it and got connected to an EDD agent in about 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Their website is claimyr.com. Much better than spending all day hitting redial or waiting for weeks to get help with your claim.

•I used it back in January when my claim got stuck after my ID.me verification. It actually did work - got me through to an agent who fixed everything in like 15 minutes. Was definitely worth it for me since I was about to miss a mortgage payment.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I watched the video and this might be exactly what I need right now. I'll try the other tips first thing tomorrow, but if those don't work, I think I'll give this a shot. At this point, I just need to get my claim filed before I'm completely broke.

Nobody mentioned this yet but double check that you're calling during the right hours. They changed them recently I think - pretty sure its 8am-5pm weekdays only. Also make sure you have all your info ready when you call: - SSN - Driver's license/ID - Last employer info (address, phone, dates worked) - Reason for separation This will speed things up once you get through.

•Yes, I've been calling during their open hours and I have all my documents organized and ready to go. It's just so frustrating that I can't even get to the point where someone asks for this information!

I work with unemployment cases regularly, and here's what's likely happening: if the online system gave you an "identity verification issues" message, there's probably a mismatch between your application information and what's in their database. This often happens when: 1. You've had a name change 2. Your address doesn't match what they have on file 3. Your employment history shows an overlap 4. Your SSN is triggering a verification flag When you do get through, ask specifically about what's causing the identity verification issue. This will help them resolve it faster. And while you wait, try submitting the identity verification documents through UI Online if that option is available - sometimes this resolves the issue without needing to call.

•This is really helpful information. I did legally change my name about 2 years ago after getting married, and I think that might be the issue. I've updated everything with Social Security, but maybe EDD still has my old name. I'll definitely mention this specifically when I finally get through.

BTW has anyone else noticed how they seem to disconnect you right when you're about to reach an agent?? happened to me 3 times in a row once... made me wonder if they do it on purpose when they're too busy

•The disconnection issues are usually related to their phone system getting overloaded, not intentional disconnects. They're still using fairly outdated call center technology that wasn't designed to handle the current volume. When too many people are in the queue, it can cause unexpected disconnections.

UPDATE: I finally got through today! Used a combination of the tips from this thread - called at 8:01am exactly, used the 1-2-4 prompt sequence, and was on hold for about 45 minutes but finally spoke to someone. The rep confirmed it was indeed a name change issue causing the verification problem. For anyone else with this problem, persistence is key! Thank you everyone for your help!

•congrats!! how long did they say it would take to process ur claim now that u got through?

•They said 7-10 business days for processing, then another week for the first payment once I do my first certification. Longer than I hoped but at least it's moving forward now!
