EDD phone nightmare - 3 days trying to reach an agent with no success!
I lost my job last week (restaurant shut down suddenly) and I've been desperately trying to file for unemployment since Thursday morning. The EDD website keeps giving me an error when I try to create an account saying 'we cannot process your request at this time.' I've tried calling the main EDD number at least 25 times but either get a busy signal or that automated message saying they're experiencing high call volume before it hangs up on me! I'm getting really worried as my rent is due in 2 weeks and I have maybe $430 to my name right now. Is there ANY phone number that actually connects to a human being at EDD? Or some secret time of day when the lines aren't jammed? This is my first time applying and I'm completely lost. Any advice would be so appreciated!

I was in the exact same situation last month and discovered a service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. I was skeptical at first but it worked when I'd been trying on my own for over a week with no luck. They basically call EDD for you and transfer you when they get through. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

•Thanks for the suggestion! Did it actually work for you? I'm pretty desperate at this point but also worried about using third-party services with something as important as unemployment.

The EDD phone lines are TOTAL GARBAGE!!! I spent 2 WEEKS trying to get thru before I finally connected. The best time to call is Tuesday or Wednesday at EXACTLY 8:01am right when they open. Don't bother with the main number - use 1-833-978-2511 and press 1, then 2, then 4 immediately. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't IT'S ALL LUCK!!! The whole system is designed to make you give up!!!

•Thank you for the specific number and tips! I'll try the 8:01am strategy tomorrow morning. Did you have to wait long once you actually got into the queue?

I've been through this process a few times and here's what I recommend: 1. First, try applying online again but use a different browser or clear your cache. The EDD website can be finicky. 2. For phone calls, the technical support line (1-833-978-2511) is sometimes easier to reach than the main claim line. They can't file your claim, but they can often troubleshoot website issues or transfer you to someone who can help. 3. Try calling mid-week (Tuesday-Thursday) between 10am-11am or 1:30pm-2:30pm when call volume sometimes dips. 4. If you keep getting the 'high call volume' message, try hanging up and immediately redialing rather than waiting. Some people report success with this method. Don't give up - the system is frustrating but persistence pays off. Once you get your claim filed, make sure to certify on time every two weeks.

•Great advice here. I'd add that if the restaurant closed suddenly, make sure you have your last day of work documented somehow (final paycheck, email from manager, etc). EDD might ask for verification during your eligibility interview. Also worth mentioning you can request backpay to the date you became unemployed, even if it takes time to get your claim processed.

•Lunchtime is actually the worst time to call in my experience. Everyone thinks that's a good time so the lines are extra clogged. Early morning is definitely best.

When you apply online, make sure you're using a desktop computer if possible, not a mobile device. Many of the website errors happen on phones or tablets. If you keep getting the error message, try using Internet Explorer (yes, the old browser) as the EDD website sometimes works better with it. For phone contact, here's a method that worked for me: call the 833-978-2511 number, press 1 for English, then when prompted press 2 and immediately after press 4. This sequence sometimes gets you to a queue instead of the disconnection message. Be prepared to wait 1-2 hours once you're in the queue. While you're waiting to get through, gather all your employment information: last employer details, start/end dates, reason for separation, wages earned, etc. Having this ready will make the application process much smoother when you finally connect.

•Thank you for the detailed advice! I only have a laptop but I'll try different browsers. And I'll prepare all my employment info beforehand - that's a good idea. Do I need any specific documents from my former employer to apply? They didn't give me anything when they closed down.

Just wanted to update that I was able to get through today! I tried the 833 number that people suggested with the 1-2-4 sequence right at 8:01am. It took about 7 attempts but I finally got into the queue instead of being disconnected. Waited about 45 minutes but finally spoke to someone who helped me file my claim. They said I should receive my account number in the mail within 10 days. Thank you everyone for the help!

•That's great news! Once you get your account number, make sure to register for UI Online right away. It makes the certification process much easier. And remember your first certification will probably be about 2 weeks after your claim is approved. Set a calendar reminder so you don't miss it.
