Filing new UI claim on expiration date - can I do it today or wait until tomorrow?

So my benefit year officially expires today (March 15th) according to my UI Online account. I just logged in to certify for my last week and noticed there's already an option to file a new claim showing up. I'm confused because I thought I had to wait until the current benefit year was completely over before filing a new one. Can I actually submit the new claim application today, or should I wait until tomorrow or even Monday? I don't want to mess anything up or have my new claim denied because I filed a few hours too early. Has anyone dealt with this before? I've been on unemployment for almost the full year after my company downsized last spring, and I really can't afford any gaps in payments right now.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking too. Just nervous about any potential payment delays.

You can actually file your new claim on the last day of your benefit year - that's when the system makes the option available. I've done this twice now, and both times the transition was smooth. The key thing to remember is that even if you file today, your new benefit year will officially start tomorrow, not today. So go ahead and file now if the option is available - it won't cause any problems and might actually help avoid payment gaps since processing can take 2-3 weeks.

Is this true??? I waited a whole week after my BYE date last time because the EDD rep on the phone told me I had to!! That's why I ended up with that stupid gap in payments... the system is so frustrating!!

The correct answer is that you can file on the actual expiration date. EDD's system is designed to allow this. When you file on the last day of your benefit year, the new claim will be processed with an effective start date of the following day. This allows for continuous coverage without gaps. However, remember that filing a new claim means going through the entire eligibility determination process again. This includes verifying your identity, employment history, and earnings during your base period. So while you can start the process today, expect at least 2-3 weeks for processing before payments resume on your new claim. Make sure you have your employment information ready for all employers you worked for during your base period (typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before filing).

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I'll get my employment info together and file today then. I didn't realize it would take 2-3 weeks for processing though - that's concerning. Is there anything I can do to speed that up?

I've been through this rodeo before and I tried calling EDD when my claim was processing but it was IMPOSSIBLE to get through. Spent 3 days calling non-stop and either got the "we're too busy" message or was on hold for hours only to get disconnected. Finally I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep was able to tell me exactly what was happening with my claim and when I could expect payment. Saved me so much stress during that transition period.

It worked for me! Got through to an actual person who could see my file and everything. Much better than the endless busy signals and disconnections.

I filed on expiration day last time & got DENIED because their stupid system flagged it as "duplicate claim" even tho my benefit year was ending!!! Had to call for WEEKS to get someone to fix it. The whole system is broken beyond belief!!

That's unusual and not how the system is designed to work. If this happens to anyone, it's likely there was a specific issue with your claim rather than a problem with filing on the expiration date. The UI Online system specifically allows filing on the last day of your benefit year. However, if you do encounter this rare issue, calling EDD is indeed the solution.

I was in this exact situation back in January. Filed my new claim on the last day of my benefit year and everything went fine. Just make sure you've satisfied the work search requirements during your current claim and accurately report any employment/income during your base period for the new claim. The system may ask if you've worked since your last claim - be honest about any work, even temporary or part-time. Also, don't forget that your weekly benefit amount might change for the new claim year depending on your earnings in the new base period. Mine actually went up about $42/week because I had some decent-paying temp work before getting laid off again.

That's good to know! I did have some part-time work for about 3 months last summer, so maybe that will affect my weekly amount. I've been keeping up with my work search activities and documenting everything, so hopefully that part will be smooth. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Sure your "sister" works for EDD. Everyone on the internet has a cousin or sister who conveniently works wherever they need to make a point. 🙄

Update: I went ahead and filed my new claim today! The system accepted it with no problems. It says my new benefit year starts tomorrow (March 16th) just like you all said. Now fingers crossed the processing doesn't take too long. Thanks everyone for your help!

Great! Just remember to keep certifying every two weeks even if your new claim is still processing. If your new claim is approved, they'll pay you for those weeks retroactively. And if there are any issues or it's taking longer than 3 weeks, definitely try to contact EDD directly to check on the status.
