EDD benefit year ending 01/04/2025 - when exactly can I refile my claim?

Hey everyone, I'm getting anxious about my unemployment running out soon. My current benefit year says 01/07/2024 - 01/04/2025 on my UI Online homepage. Does that mean I should file a new claim on 01/05/2025 specifically? Or do I need to wait until the following Monday? I've heard different things from friends - one said I have to wait until the benefit year is completely over, another said I should apply a week before it ends so there's no gap in payments. I still have about $3,800 left in my claim balance but I'm worried that'll disappear if I don't time this correctly. Anyone been through this recently? My job search in healthcare administration is going SO slow right now and I really can't afford any delay in benefits.

u can file the next day after ur benefit year ends. so yea january 5th 2025 would be when u can submit new application. dont do it early cuz system will just reject it

Thanks! Do you know if I need to file a whole new application or is there a simpler reapplication process? I'm dreading having to gather all my employment info again...

The correct procedure is to file a new claim the day after your benefit year ends. In your case, that would be January 5th, 2025. However, before you do that, check if you have any remaining balance on your current claim. If you do, and you've been continuously certifying, you should be able to continue certifying for benefits until you exhaust that balance, even if your benefit year ends. The system will notify you when it's time to file a new claim. Keep in mind that for a new claim, you'll need to have earned sufficient wages in your base period to qualify. The base period for a claim filed in January 2025 would be October 2023 through September 2024. Make sure you have your employment records for that period ready when you file.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I've been certifying regularly but wasn't sure about the remaining balance after the benefit year ends. That's really helpful about the base period too - I worked part-time from November 2023 to March 2024 before getting laid off again, so I hope that's enough to qualify.

I went through this last month and you're getting mixed advice. Here's what happened to me - my benefit year ended on 12/2 and I still had like $2,200 left. The system actually prompted me to file a new claim right after I did my last certification. I didn't have to wait until the next day or anything. Just logged in after midnight when my benefit year officially ended and there was a button to file a new claim right on my homepage. Super easy.

Huh, that's weird because when MY benefit year ended in October, I had to call EDD because there was no button to file a new claim. I waited three days thinking it would appear. The rep told me sometimes the system glitches and doesn't show the refile option for everyone automatically. Just something to be aware of!

If you're worried about phone wait times with EDD, I'd recommend using Claimyr.com - it got me through to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes when I had this exact same issue with refiling. My benefit year ended but the button to file a new claim wasn't showing up. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Saved me days of frustration trying to get through on my own.

WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T file before your benefit year ends!!! I made that mistake and it caused a HUGE mess with my claim. The system flagged it as potential fraud because I had two claims open at once and I had to go through ID verification AGAIN and it took almost 7 WEEKS to sort out. Just wait until exactly Jan 5th. And make sure you have ALL your employment info ready - they're being super strict about employment verification now. Also be prepared for them to take forever to process the new claim. Mine took 3 weeks even though I had a straightforward work history. They're understaffed and overwhelmed as usual. 🙄

Wow, that sounds like a nightmare! I definitely don't want to deal with fraud flags. I'll wait until exactly the 5th then. Really appreciate the warning!

To clarify some confusion in this thread: 1. You can file a new claim on or after January 5, 2025 (the day after your benefit year ends) 2. Any remaining balance on your current claim cannot be accessed after your benefit year ends (contrary to what one person suggested) 3. For a January 2025 claim, your standard base period will be October 1, 2023 - September 30, 2024 4. You must have earned at least $1,300 in your highest quarter during that base period, or at least $900 in your highest quarter plus total base period earnings of 1.25 times that quarter 5. UI Online should automatically prompt you to file a new claim when you log in after your benefit year ends, but system glitches do happen Make sure to have accurate information about all employers during your base period, including names, addresses, and dates of employment. Missing or incorrect information can delay your claim processing.

Thank you for the clear breakdown! This is exactly what I needed. I'll make sure to gather all my employment info ahead of time so I'm ready on January 5th.

Just curious - are you getting the extra $100/week DUA supplement on your current claim? My friend said it's supposed to be automatic if you qualified for regular UI this year, but I never got it and wondering if I should be asking about that when I call about refiling.

There is no $100/week DUA (Disaster Unemployment Assistance) supplement currently available for regular UI claims in California. Your friend is likely confusing this with a different program or is misinformed. DUA is only available during federally declared disasters and has specific eligibility requirements. Regular UI in California does not currently have any automatic supplements or extensions.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice! Just to make sure I've got this straight - I'll wait until January 5th to file a new claim, have all my employment info ready for Oct 2023-Sept 2024, and be prepared for possible processing delays. I'm going to start gathering all my employment docs now so I'm ready. Really appreciate all of you taking the time to help me out!

That's exactly right. One more tip: take screenshots of your current claim information (payment history, claim balance, etc.) before your benefit year ends. It's useful to have this documentation in case there are any questions about your previous claim during the new application process.
