When should I file for the 104 week extension with NY unemployment? No notification yet
My unemployment benefits are going to run out soon but I haven't received any notification from the DOL about filing for the 104 week extension. I'm freaking out because I heard we need to file before the deadline to get those additional weeks approved. Should I be proactive and submit a new claim by August 25th or should I wait until I get some kind of official notice? Don't want to mess anything up by filing too early, but also don't want to miss out on benefits if I wait too long. Anyone know the right timing for this? My current claim started in October last year.

Wait for the notification. If you file a new claim while your current one is still active, it might create duplicate claims in their system and potentially flag your account for fraud review. Those reviews can take MONTHS to resolve. The DOL will notify you when your benefit year is ending.

•Thank you! That makes me feel better. I was worried I'd miss out on the extension if I waited too long.

•This happened to my cousin - filed early and got stuck in review for 11 weeks with no payments. Nightmare situation 😫

•Not always true tho. I never got a notification and missed 3 weeks of benefits because I waited. The system is broken af

After being stuck in payment limbo for weeks, I finally found a service that got me through to an actual human at unemployment. Used claimyr.com and they called the unemployment line for me, stayed on hold, then connected me with a real agent who fixed my claim in 10 minutes. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast - worth checking out if you need answers about your extension: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Does this actually work? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at unemployment

•Yeah it worked for me! After weeks of trying to get through myself. They basically just automate the calling and hold process then connect you when someone picks up.

•I was skeptical too but was desperate. Got connected with someone in about 2 hours. They just handle the calling/waiting part which saved me from losing my mind on hold music lol

•I get the skepticism - I felt the same way. But when you've been trying for weeks to get through and nothing works, sometimes you gotta try something different. It worked for me.

The 104 week extension is automatic IF you qualify. You don't need to file a new claim for it. The system will review your case and if you meet the criteria, they'll just continue your benefits with the extension. Just keep certifying weekly as usual.

I went through this last month. You should get a notification about 3 weeks before your benefit year ends. It'll tell you exactly what to do. Don't file early or you'll mess everything up - seriously the worst mistake you can make with ny unemployment.

•Did yours get extended automatically or did you have to do something specific?

•Had to fill out a form online - took like 10 minutes. Just answering questions about whether I worked during the benefit year and stuff. Super easy but you have to wait till they tell you to do it.

THIS IS MISINFORMATION!!!! There is NO SUCH THING as a 104 week automatic extension right now!!!! The pandemic extensions ended years ago. Regular UI is 26 weeks ONLY unless there's a specific state emergency program I haven't heard about. Where did you even hear about this?

•I heard it from a friend who works at a temp agency. She said NY just approved some kind of extension program? Now im confused 😕

•Your friend is probably confusing this with the pandemic extensions which ended long ago. Currently NY only offers the standard 26 weeks. I'd double check your info.

IMO you should be proactive and call the DOL directly. The online system is notoriously glitchy with notifications. I never got my notification and almost missed filing. Better safe than sorry.

•Good luck calling them lol... I tried for 2 weeks straight and couldn't get through 🙄

•True it's almost impossible to reach them by calling directly. I ended up using claimyr.com which got me through after I'd wasted days trying myself.

What 104 week extension are you talking about?? I've been on unemployment for 8 months and haven't heard anything about this. Is this something new??

There's a lot of confusion in this thread. Let me clear things up: There is NO 104 week extension currently available in the New York unemployment system. The regular UI benefit period is 26 weeks. What you might be referring to is your "benefit year" which is typically 52 weeks from when you first filed. After your benefit year ends, you CAN file a new claim if you're still unemployed, but that's not an extension - it's a completely new claim that requires you to have worked during your previous benefit year to qualify. The system WILL notify you when your benefit year is ending (usually 2-3 weeks before). If you're still confused or worried, your best bet is to speak directly with a DOL representative. The online portal and automated phone system often give generic information that doesn't apply to your specific situation. I recommend using claimyr.com if you're having trouble getting through on the phone. They'll wait on hold for you and connect you with an agent when one becomes available. Speaking to a real person is the only way to get accurate information about your specific claim. Don't file anything new until you're instructed to do so or you risk complications with your current benefits.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! This makes so much more sense now. I think my friend mixed up the benefit year with an extension. Really appreciate the help.

•Yeah, I was about to say the same thing! There's a TON of misinformation about UI benefits floating around. Always check the official DOL site for accurate info.

My benefit year just ended last month. They sent me an email about 2 weeks before with instructions. If you don't get anything, definitely call because something might be wrong with your contact info in their system.

Lol at everyone here thinking NY unemployment communicates properly 🤡 They'll probably notify you AFTER your benefits end, then make you jump through 50 hoops to fix it. The system is designed to frustrate people into giving up.

Whatever you do, DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Save screenshots, record call reference numbers, etc. NY unemployment will try to say they notified you even if they didn't, and then you'll have proof.

Curious - what industry do you work in? Some sectors qualify for different types of extensions or training benefits that others don't. Might be worth looking into.

•I was in hospitality/restaurant management before getting laid off last year. Are there specific programs for that industry?

•Hospitality workers sometimes qualify for retraining programs through workforce development. Check with your local career center - they might have options that extend benefits while you retrain for a new field.

just went through this whole process. DO NOT file a new claim without being told to. they WILL notify you. mine came exactly 3 weeks before my benefit year ended. they sent email, message in the portal, AND a letter. you won't miss it.
