EDD benefit year ending 1/11/2025 - when should I refile to avoid gaps?

Hey everyone, I'm stressing about my benefit year ending soon. My current UI claim expires on January 11th, 2025, and I'm worried about timing my new application. I was thinking of refiling on January 6th, but I'm not sure if that's cutting it too close? I really can't afford to miss even a week of benefits. Anyone know the best timing for refiling before a benefit year ends? The EDD website isn't clear about this and the last time I called it took forever to get through. Thanks for any help!

your fine filing on 1/6 they process pretty quick now not like back in 2023 when it took 3 weeks for me lol

That's a relief to hear! Did you have any gap in payments when you refiled, or did it transition smoothly?

Actually, EDD recommends filing a new claim within the week BEFORE your benefit year ends. So January 6th is definitely NOT too late - it's actually perfect timing. The system is designed to process new claims while your current claim is still active to prevent gaps in payment. Just make sure you complete your final certification for the ending benefit year before submitting your new application. One thing to keep in mind - you'll need to have earned enough wages in your base period to qualify for a new claim. If your benefit year is ending 1/11/2025, your base period will be roughly Oct 2023 through Sept 2024 (they use the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters).

I thought you had to wait till AFTER the claim year ends??? I did that last time and lost 2 weeks of benefits because I didnt know. The EDD website is SO confusing!!!!

OMG I went through this exact situation last month and it was a NIGHTMARE!! I waited until after my benefit year ended (big mistake) and then couldn't get anyone on the phone for TWO WEEKS!!! Had to borrow money from my sister to pay rent. The system kept telling me "maximum callers reached" every single time I called. I must have called 50+ times a day!!!

I had the same problem trying to reach EDD last week. After getting nowhere for days, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to a rep in about 20 minutes. They have this system that calls for you and when they get through, they connect you. Saved me so much stress! You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Worth it for peace of mind when dealing with benefit year transitions.

To give you the most accurate guidance: you should refile 5-7 days before your benefit year ends. Filing on January 6th for a January 11th end date is ideal timing. Here's why: 1. EDD systems need time to process your new claim while your current claim is still active 2. Filing too early (more than 10 days before) could create conflicts in their system 3. Filing after your benefit year ends will definitely cause a gap in payments Make sure you have all your employment information for the past 18 months ready, including any part-time or temporary work. You'll also need to complete any remaining certifications on your current claim before the new one activates. And very important - your new weekly benefit amount may be different based on your earnings during the new base period, so don't be surprised if the amount changes.

This is super helpful, thank you! I worked part-time for about 4 months during my claim year - I'm guessing that will affect my new benefit amount? I made about $8,600 during those months.

when I refilled last year my claim got stuck in pending for like a month because they said I needed an eligibilitty interview again even though nothing changed in my situation!! make sure u call them if ur payments dont switch to paid within a week after u certify on the new claim

Oh no, that sounds stressful! Did they backpay you for the weeks that were pending once they did the interview?

To answer your question about your part-time work - yes, earning $8,600 over 4 months will definitely impact your new benefit calculation. EDD will include those earnings in your base period calculation. This could either increase or decrease your weekly benefit amount depending on your previous earnings history. The good news is that you clearly earned enough to qualify for a new claim (minimum earnings requirement is around $1,300 in your highest quarter). Just be prepared that your weekly benefit amount might change from what you're currently receiving.

Thanks for explaining that! I'm hoping it might actually increase my benefit amount since I was earning more at this part-time job than my previous position that the original claim was based on.

btw dont forget you gotta do that ID.me thing again when you refile! they make u verify ur identity every new claim now its annoying but dont skip it or youll be stuck waiting

This is partially correct but needs clarification. You typically only need to complete full ID.me verification once. For subsequent claims, you'll just need to log in to your existing ID.me account during the application process. It's much faster the second time around. What IS required for every new claim is providing identity documentation in the UI Online portal after submitting your application - this is different from the full ID.me process.

Also, to directly answer your original question - yes, January 6th is an excellent date to refile if your benefit year ends January 11th. That gives EDD 5 days to process your new claim, which is typically sufficient. Be prepared to certify for benefits as usual during this transition period. Sometimes the certification for the last week of your old claim and first week of your new claim might be delayed as the system updates, but any eligible weeks will still be paid.

@profile4 yes they did backpay me after the interview but I had to wait like 5 weeks which was super stressful!!! make sure u answer ur phone even if its unknown numbers because they only call once for the interview and if u miss it u have to reschedule and wait again!!

That's good advice, thank you! I'll keep my phone on me at all times during that period!

I just went through this exact same situation in October and can confirm January 6th is perfect timing! I filed my new claim 5 days before my benefit year ended and had zero gap in payments. The key thing is to make sure you complete your final certification on your current claim BEFORE you submit the new application - don't do them at the same time or it can confuse their system. Also, keep all your wage documentation handy because they might ask for verification of your earnings during the new base period. The transition was way smoother than I expected after reading all the horror stories online. You've got this!

Thank you so much for sharing your recent experience! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who just went through this exact timing. Quick question - when you say to complete the final certification BEFORE submitting the new application, do you mean I should wait until after I certify for the week ending January 11th to file the new claim? Or can I file the new claim on January 6th and just make sure to certify for my final week when it becomes available? I want to make sure I get the timing exactly right!
