I'm really confused about what's happening with my EDD payments. Last Tuesday I had my eligibility phone interview with an EDD rep. Everything seemed to go well, and she actually released payments for my first two weeks right after the call (they switched from pending to paid within hours and I got the money on my card Wednesday). But now I just certified for my next two weeks on Sunday, and it's showing as PENDING instead of paid. I thought once you pass the interview, everything should process normally? Has anyone experienced this where EDD pays you for some weeks but then new certifications get stuck? This is my first time ever filing for unemployment and I really need the money to come through consistently. The rep didn't mention I'd need another interview or that there were any issues with my claim. Should I be worried?
So my current unemployment benefit year is set to expire on December 28th, 2025. I've been stressing about timing my reapplication just right. Is it better to submit a new claim a few days BEFORE my benefit year ends (like December 25-26)? Or should I wait until after it officially expires (December 29th)? I'm worried about creating a gap in my benefits since I know EDD takes forever to process new claims. But I also don't want to mess anything up by applying too early and having overlapping claims or something weird. Anyone have experience with this timing issue? The EDD website is super vague about it.
one thing nobody mentioned - if your weekly benefit amount on the new claim is $40+ lower than your old claim, you might qualify for something called the DNCP (deferred new claim payment) where they use your old wba instead. ask about it if your new amount is way lower
Just wanted to add one more thing that helped me during my reapplication process - make sure you have your Social Security card handy when you apply on Dec 29th. Even though I had done ID verification before, they asked me to upload a clear photo of my SS card during the new application process. Also, if you're planning to apply first thing in the morning, try around 6-7 AM - the system seems less glitchy then compared to later in the day when everyone's trying to access it. Good luck with your reapplication!
Hi everyone, feeling pretty frustrated right now. I exhausted 24 weeks of my UI benefits after getting laid off from my marketing job last September (2023). Finally found a new position at a startup in mid-February 2025, but they just let me go after only 6 weeks due to funding issues. Talk about bad luck! I'm trying to figure out if I need to file a completely new claim or if I can somehow reopen my previous one since it hasn't been that long. Does anyone know if I've worked enough at the new job to qualify for a new claim? Or should I try to get the remaining weeks from my previous claim (if there are any left)? The EDD website is confusing me more than helping. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
One last piece of advice: After you file, keep certifying every two weeks without fail, even if your claim status shows as pending for a while. Many people make the mistake of waiting until they see an approved claim before certifying, but you should start right away. This ensures you'll receive backpay for all eligible weeks once your claim is processed. Also, check your UI Online account daily for any notices or requests for additional information that might need your attention.
Hey Omar, I went through something really similar last year! Got laid off, exhausted my benefits, worked for about 8 weeks at a new company, then got let go again. Here's what happened when I filed: Since I hadn't earned enough at the short-term job to qualify for a brand new claim, EDD automatically put me back on my previous claim for the remaining balance. The process took about 3 weeks to sort out, but I didn't lose any benefits during that time as long as I kept certifying. One thing that helped speed things up was calling the EDD technical support line (not the general number) at 1-800-300-5616. They were able to explain exactly what was happening with my claim status while it was being processed. Also, keep all your documentation from both the startup and your previous employer handy - they might ask for additional verification during the review process. Good luck, and don't let the system discourage you. You've got this!
To all those having trouble reaching a human at California Unemployment. I just ran across this video that gave me a shortcut to reach a human. Hope it helps! https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI
I've been dealing with a similar situation for weeks now. That message usually means they need additional documentation or there's a discrepancy they need to review. In my experience, you'll likely need to call them directly to find out exactly what they need. The wait times are brutal, but it's often the only way to get specific information about your case. Have you tried calling the technical support line? Sometimes they can at least tell you what documents might be missing from your file. Don't give up - many of us have gotten through this process, it just takes persistence.
I just received a notice that I've used all 26 weeks of my regular UI benefits, but I'm still struggling to find work in the healthcare admin field. Are there any extensions available now in 2025? I heard something about FED-ED but not sure if that's still a thing or if there are other programs I should apply for? My last payment was $432 and I really need something to bridge the gap until I can find stable employment. My rent is due next week and I'm freaking out a little.
One last thing to keep in mind: if you don't qualify for any extensions, you might be eligible to open a new claim after 12 months from the start date of your original claim, assuming you've earned enough wages in the meantime. This isn't an extension but a completely new benefit year. Also, while this isn't widely known, if your industry has been affected by any trade agreements, you might qualify for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), which provides additional benefits and training opportunities. Good luck with your call tomorrow - hope you get through and receive good news about the training extension!
@Hugo Kass - I just went through this exact situation in January! A few additional tips that might help: 1) When you call EDD, try calling right at 8am when they open - I had better luck getting through then. 2) If you do qualify for the training extension, ask about "bridge benefits" - some people don't know EDD can sometimes provide a small payment while your TE application is being processed. 3) For immediate help with rent, check if your county has emergency rental assistance programs - many still have COVID relief funds available. 4) Look into your local One-Stop Career Centers (America's Job Center) - they often have emergency assistance and can help you navigate the training programs. Don't give up, there are more options than it initially seems!

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know that my payment switched from pending to paid this morning! You were all right about being patient. Thanks for calming me down and providing such helpful information. For anyone else experiencing this - mine took exactly 3 days to switch from pending to paid after certification.

Great news! Glad to hear it resolved itself. This is the typical timeframe - the EDD system often takes 2-3 days to process certifications even after your claim is fully approved.

Lucky you! Mine took 3 weeks for no reason! The EDD system is so inconsistent!

Congratulations on getting it resolved! This is such a helpful thread for others going through the same stress. The 3-day timeline you experienced is actually pretty typical for EDD processing. I went through something similar a few months ago and was panicking just like you were. It's reassuring to see that the system usually works itself out within that 72-hour window that others mentioned. Thanks for coming back to update us - it really helps when people share their positive outcomes!
