EDD benefits ran out - can I get an extension in 2025 when no jobs are hiring?

I just hit my 6 month mark with regular UI benefits and my last payment is processing now. Not sure what I'm going to do because the job market in my industry (medical billing) is terrible right now. I've applied to 47 jobs in the last month, had 8 interviews, but keep getting rejected because companies want 5+ years experience even for entry-level positions. I completed a certification program in medical coding hoping it would make me more marketable, but that hasn't helped either. Does anyone know if California EDD offers any kind of extension beyond the standard 26 weeks? My rent just went up $200 and I'm honestly panicking about what happens next. Are there any special circumstances where they give you more time? Or any other programs I should apply for?

Unfortunately, regular benefit extensions like Fed-Ed and PEUC don't exist anymore since those were pandemic-era programs. Your regular UI claim is limited to 26 weeks maximum in California. However, you might qualify for other assistance programs: 1. CalFresh (food assistance) 2. CalWORKs (if you have dependent children) 3. General Assistance/Relief through your county Also, check with your local America's Job Center (formerly One-Stop) as they sometimes have training funds or placement assistance that might help. Your medical coding certification is valuable - maybe try looking at remote positions that might not be advertised in your immediate area?

Thanks for the info. I'm really disappointed there's no extensions available anymore. I didn't realize those were just pandemic things. Do you know if I have to wait a certain period before I can apply for UI again in the future? Like if I find a job for a few months and then get laid off again?

I've applied to 3 positions at Kaiser and 2 at Sutter Health. They all wanted 3-5 years experience minimum. One recruiter told me they had 200+ applications for a single billing position. It's crazy out there right now!

To answer your specific question about qualifying for UI again - you need to have enough earnings in your base period to establish a new claim. Typically you need to work and earn wages for at least one quarter. The base period is the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file a new claim. If you get even a part-time job, make sure you're reporting those earnings during certification. You can still receive partial benefits if you're earning less than your weekly benefit amount. This extends your claim too since you're not using your full benefit amount each week.

That makes sense, thanks for explaining. I'll take any job I can get at this point, even part-time, and try to build up enough hours to qualify again if needed.

when my benefits ran out last year i just applied for disablity instead and got it right away!!! said i had depression from not finding work which was true.. maybe try that?

Please don't suggest this. SDI (State Disability Insurance) requires medical certification from a doctor for a legitimate disability that prevents you from working. Fraudulent claims can result in penalties, having to repay benefits with penalties, and even criminal charges in serious cases. It's not an alternative to UI when benefits expire.

I was in the EXACT same situation last year after my tech support job was eliminated. Couldn't get an EDD rep on the phone for WEEKS to ask about extension options. Finally I found Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual EDD agent in under 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The agent confirmed no extensions were available but helped me understand how my remaining benefits worked and gave me info about other assistance programs I qualified for. Totally worth it rather than wasting hours redialing.

Yes, 100% legit. They use automated dialing technology to get through the phone system and secure your place in line. Saved me hours of frustration.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS RIGGED!!! They give you just enough benefits to barely survive for 6 months then cut you off completely while these employers are demanding ridiculous qualifications for entry level jobs!!!! I went through the EXACT same thing and ended up having to move in with my parents at 38 years old. The EDD doesn't care about us at all - they're designed to protect employers NOT workers!!!! My congressman's office was ZERO help too when I contacted them.

Yeah but HOW do you find another job when employers want 5 years experience for ENTRY LEVEL?!? It's impossible! The system is broken!!!

Have you connected with your local Workforce Development Board? They often have resources specifically for people whose UI benefits are exhausting. Some counties have special grant programs for certain industries or demographics. They can also sometimes offer subsidized employment or on-the-job training where an employer is incentivized to hire you. This is different from EDD but works in partnership with them. You can find your local board here: https://cwdb.ca.gov/local_boards/local_workforce_investment_boards/

I hadn't heard about this at all! Thank you - I'll check with my county office tomorrow. Anything that could help with job placement would be amazing at this point.

One important thing to remember: if you're receiving partial UI benefits from working part-time, make sure you're still doing your work search activities and certifying correctly. Many people make mistakes here and end up with conditional payments or worse, overpayment notices. Those work search requirements are still in effect (3 activities per week) even if you're working part-time hours. Just because you're working doesn't mean you can skip reporting your work search efforts during certification.

That's good to know. I've been documenting all my job applications and interviews, so I have plenty to report for the work search requirements. Definitely don't want to mess anything up and end up owing money back.
