EDD benefits exhausted - How to apply for extensions in 2025?

My regular UI benefits just ran out last week ($14,200 total over about 18 weeks), but I'm still struggling to find employment in the tech sector. My last certification was processed but showed $0 remaining benefit balance. I've been applying to jobs consistently (logging 5+ applications weekly as required), but the market is brutal right now with all these layoffs. Does California still offer any extension programs in 2025? I checked the EDD website but got confused by all the different programs mentioned. I saw something about FED-ED but not sure if that's still active? My rent is due in 3 weeks and I'm seriously starting to panic. Has anyone successfully gotten their benefits extended recently? What's the process like?

sorry to hear that. i exhausted my benefits 2 months ago and tried to get an extension but EDD said there are NO automatic extensions anymore like during covid. fed-ed ended years ago

Oh no, that's really disappointing. Did they suggest any alternatives or other assistance programs I could apply for?

Unfortunately, regular UI extensions aren't available anymore like they were during the pandemic. Once you exhaust your claim balance, you need to wait until your benefit year ends before filing a new claim (assuming you've earned enough wages in the meantime to qualify). However, you should look into these options: 1. CalFresh (food assistance) 2. County General Assistance/Relief programs 3. CalWORKs if you have dependent children 4. Local workforce development centers for job placement assistance Some industries also have special programs - if you're in tech, check with your local workforce board as they sometimes have retraining grants specifically for tech workers who've been laid off.

Thank you for the detailed response. I don't have dependents so CalWORKs isn't an option, but I'll definitely look into CalFresh and the local workforce programs. Do you know if I need to wait until I have zero money left to apply for County General Assistance? I have about $800 left in savings.

The system is COMPLETELY BROKEN!! I was in the same boat last month and tried calling EDD about extensions for THREE DAYS STRAIGHT and couldn't get through! Keep getting the stupid "we're experiencing high call volume" message and then it hangs up!!! How are we supposed to get help if you can't even talk to someone?!?!?

I feel this so much. Same thing happened with my claim back in January. The whole system feels designed to prevent people from getting the help they need.

I had the same frustrating experience trying to reach EDD about my disqualification. After days of getting nowhere with the regular phone lines, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an EDD rep within 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km It doesn't change the fact that there aren't extensions available anymore, but at least you can get a definitive answer from EDD about your specific situation and what other programs you might qualify for. The rep I spoke with walked me through some alternative assistance options I hadn't considered.

I'm in literally THE EXACT same situation. My benefits ran out two weeks ago and I've been desperately searching for info on extensions. From what I can tell, unless there's a new federal program or California hits some high unemployment threshold, there's no automatic extension program right now. It's honestly terrifying... have you checked into any other types of assistance? I'm thinking about trying to file for disability since my anxiety and depression have gotten so bad during unemployment, but not sure if that's even possible.

Just so you're aware, transitioning from UI to Disability Insurance (SDI) isn't straightforward. You would need medical certification from a doctor that you have a qualifying condition that prevents you from working. Being anxious or depressed about your unemployment situation generally wouldn't qualify unless a doctor determines it's severe enough to be medically disabling. Also, if you're applying for jobs while on UI, that would conflict with SDI requirements, as SDI requires that you're unable to perform your regular work. EDD does cross-check between these programs, so please consult with a healthcare provider first to determine if this is appropriate for your situation.

Anyone know if the training extension benefit (CTB) is still available? I think that lets you get benefits while in approved training? My cousin did that in 2023 i think

Yes, the California Training Benefits (CTB) program is still active in 2025, but it doesn't necessarily extend your benefits - it allows you to attend approved training while receiving your regular UI benefits without having to look for work during that time. However, there is also the Training Extension (TE) which can provide up to 52 additional weeks of benefits if you're enrolled in an approved training program. You need to apply for this before your regular UI benefits are exhausted though, so the original poster may be too late for this option unless they have a few weeks of benefits remaining. To qualify, you need to be in a state-approved training program and meet other eligibility requirements. The application process requires submission of a DE 1446 form, and approval isn't guaranteed.

Wait, this is really important information! I actually have been considering going back for some additional tech certifications. I thought my benefits were completely exhausted, but I just double-checked my account and I actually have 1 more week of partial benefits ($112) left. Is that cutting it too close to apply for the Training Extension? How long does approval usually take?

To directly answer your question: There are currently no automatic federal extensions like the ones available during the pandemic (PEUC, PUA, etc.). However, there are still a few options to consider: 1. California Training Benefits (CTB) program - As mentioned by others, if you enroll in approved training, you may qualify for the Training Extension (TE) which provides additional benefits. With only one week left, you should contact EDD immediately about this. 2. Work Sharing Program - If you can find part-time work, this program allows you to receive UI benefits for reduced hours. 3. New claim after benefit year - Once your benefit year ends (12 months from when you first filed), you can file a new claim if you've earned wages during that year. 4. Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) - If your job loss was due to foreign trade impact, you might qualify for this program. I'd recommend submitting the DE 1446 form for training extension immediately while you still have some benefits remaining, even if it's just one week. Also, request an eligibility interview with EDD to discuss all possible options for your specific situation.

Thank you for this comprehensive answer! I've never heard of the Work Sharing Program, but I'll look into that too. I'm going to submit the DE 1446 form today and try to get that eligibility interview scheduled ASAP. My job loss wasn't trade-related, so TAA probably isn't an option, but the training extension sounds promising. I really appreciate everyone's help!

Have you tried looking at the Amazon warehouse? They're always hiring and the pay is decent until you find something better in your field. That's what I did when my benefits ran out last year.

Not everyone can do physical warehouse work! Some of us have health limitations or are trying to stay in our career field. Comments like this are NOT helpful when people are asking about benefits they PAID INTO through their taxes!!
