THE EDD SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO FAIL US! They DELIBERATELY make it confusing about extensions and new claims so people give up. I've been through this THREE TIMES now and every time it's different rules and requirements. They'll probably tell you that your 3 months of work isn't enough for a new claim. The whole thing is RIGGED against workers!!!!
While the system can definitely be frustrating, the rules about qualifying for a new claim are actually consistent - you need to have earned enough wages in your base period (usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before filing). That's why 3 months of work might not be enough, depending on when and how much was earned.
My benefits ran out last year and I had to wait until my benefit year ended before I could file again. During that time I picked up gig work doing DoorDash and Instacart - not great money but it helped bridge the gap. Just something to consider while you're waiting to qualify for a new claim.
Just to add one more important detail: if you do manage to reach EDD and confirm you have a valid payment plan, get EVERYTHING in writing. Ask them to email or mail you confirmation that your refund won't be offset. Too many people get verbal confirmations that later turn out to be meaningless. If they say your refund is protected, ask for the specific regulation or code they're citing, and get the name/ID of the representative you spoke with.
u should check ur mail everyday cuz sometimes they send u letters asking for more proof of employment or identity stuff even if u already did the online verification
One more thing - make sure you report you were looking for work during this period EVEN THOUGH you had this short gig. Since it's temporary, you're still available for full-time employment and should be continuing your work search efforts. I got tripped up on this and almost lost benefits because I didn't report my work search activities during a week I had a short contract job.
OMG the EDD system is THE WORST for self-employed and contract workers!! I had to deal with this for MONTHS during the pandemic. Sometimes I think they intentionally make it confusing so they can later say you did it wrong and make you pay everything back. It's like they don't understand that not everyone has a simple hourly job with regular paychecks!!

My sister works for EDD (not saying this to brag just giving context lol) and she says one of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking they can't work part-time while on unemployment. The system is actually designed to encourage you to take part-time work while searching for full-time jobs! You just need to be honest about your earnings. \n\nShe also mentioned that tour guide work specifically wouldn't typically cause availability issues since it's outside normal business hours when most interviews and job opportunities would occur anyway.\n\nAnyway, take the tour guide job! Some income is better than none, and it won't harm your unemployment as long as you report accurately.

Thank you - that's really reassuring to hear from someone with insider knowledge! I'll definitely take the tour guide position and make sure I report everything accurately. I appreciate everyone's help - feeling much less anxious about this decision now.
