3 weeks since EDD application submission - no response at all. Normal wait time?

I submitted my unemployment claim exactly 23 days ago after being laid off from my retail management position. My online account just says 'submitted' but nothing else has changed. I'm getting really anxious because my savings won't last more than another month. I've checked my UI Online inbox every day, and there's nothing. No emails, no letters in the mail, absolutely zero communication from EDD. I've tried calling but can't get through - just constant busy signals or the 'too many callers' message. Is this normal? How long does EDD typically take to approve or deny a claim these days? I keep reading different timelines online and don't know what to expect. Should I reapply or would that just mess things up more?

hang in there its totally normal these days. i waited almost 5 weeks b4 anything happened with mine back in february. the system is super backed up still, even tho were past covid. my friend applied last month and got approved in 2 weeks tho so its really hit or miss

5 weeks?? That's terrifying. Did you do anything special to get it moving along, or just wait it out?

The standard processing time is 2-3 weeks, but that's rarely the reality anymore. Several factors can extend this timeline: - High volume of applications - Identity verification issues - Employer response delays - Eligibility questions requiring manual review Your claim is likely in the verification queue. Double-check your UI Online account for any "Tasks" or "Notifications" sections that might indicate action needed from you. Make sure you completed your ID.me verification if prompted. DO NOT submit a new application as this will definitely delay things further and potentially flag your account for fraud review.

Thank you for the clear explanation. I checked again and there's definitely nothing in my Tasks or Notifications sections. I did complete the ID.me verification right when I applied. I guess I'll just keep trying to call and hope for the best.

I know everyone says 2-3 weeks but my claim took SEVEN WEEKS and no one would tell me what was happening!!! EDD is a DISASTER and they don't care about us!! I had to borrow money from family to pay rent while waiting. The worst part is that even after approval they make you wait ANOTHER week before first payment actually hits your account. The whole system is designed to make people give up.

Not everyone has such a bad experience. My claim was approved in 10 days last month. Maybe it depends on your work history or something?

This happened to me too, and I found out it was because my former employer contested my claim. They never told me they were doing this! It turned out EDD had sent me a letter requesting an eligibility interview, but it went to my old address. Do you have your mailing address updated correctly in the system? Also check your spam folder for emails.

That's a good point about my address. I moved about 6 months ago but I'm pretty sure I put my current address on the application. I'll double check that in the system. Nothing in spam folder though, I've been checking that religiously!

If you're stuck in limbo for more than 3 weeks, I highly recommend using Claimyr to get through to an EDD representative. Regular phone lines are almost impossible to get through on, but Claimyr helped me connect with an actual human at EDD who could see exactly what was happening with my claim. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km and their website is claimyr.com. The rep I spoke with was able to tell me my claim was pending because of an employer response issue and they pushed it through that same day.

I've never heard of this service before. Have other people here used it successfully? It would be worth it if I could actually talk to someone who could tell me what's going on.

I used something like this and it WORKED but its ridiculous we have to PAY extra money just to access a government service our taxes already pay for!!!! The whole system is corrupt!!!

One thing to make sure you're doing: continue to certify for benefits every two weeks, even if your claim status is still pending. Many people don't realize they should be certifying during this waiting period. When your claim is eventually approved, you'll receive all eligible back payments for the weeks you certified correctly. Log in to UI Online every Sunday after your certification period ends and complete this step.

Wait, I'm supposed to be certifying already? I thought I couldn't certify until my claim was approved! I haven't certified for anything yet. Will this cause problems with my claim?

Don't worry too much, but you should start certifying now. Log in to UI Online and see if you have any weeks available to certify. If you do, complete them right away. If not, you may need to wait until your claim is processed further. Missing certifications can usually be done retroactively once your claim is approved, but it's always better to certify on time when possible.

My entire department got laid off in January and we all applied for UI the same day. Super weird but everyone got different timelines - I was approved in 2 weeks, my cubicle neighbor took 6 weeks with no explanation for the difference. One thing I learned from calling is that sometimes claims get randomly selected for additional verification, and those take longer. It's basically luck of the draw unfortunately. Keep trying to call, especially right when they open in the morning.

This is so true, my husband and I both applied on the same day after our company downsized and his was approved in 12 days while mine took almost a month. Same employer, same separation reason!

have u tried logging in early in the AM to check ur account? sometimes the system updates overnight and i noticed my status changed at like 6am one day. also the ui online site is glitchy sometimes and shows different info depending on if ur on mobile or desktop

That's a good tip - I usually check in the afternoon. I'll try early morning tomorrow. And I've only been checking on my phone, so I'll try desktop too!

I'm in a similar situation - applied 3 weeks ago and still showing "submitted" status with zero communication from EDD. The anxiety is real when you're watching your savings disappear! From what I'm reading here, it sounds like anywhere from 2-7 weeks is the current reality, which is frustrating but at least gives me some perspective. I've been checking my account obsessively but maybe I should focus on the certification piece that Nick mentioned - I had no idea I was supposed to be doing that already. Going to try calling first thing Monday morning and see if the early bird strategy works. Hang in there Santiago, sounds like we're both in the same boat waiting for this bureaucratic machine to turn!

@Isabella Brown totally feel you on the anxiety part! It s'so stressful watching the bank account get smaller while waiting for EDD to do literally anything. I m'definitely going to try that early morning login trick and check on desktop too. The certification thing really caught me off guard - I had no clue we were supposed to start that before approval. Thanks for the solidarity, hopefully we both hear something soon! Let me know if the Monday morning call strategy works for you.

I went through this exact same waiting period last year and I know how nerve-wracking it is! 23 days is definitely within the "normal but frustrating" range unfortunately. A few things that helped me during my wait: 1. Set up text alerts in your UI Online account if you haven't already - sometimes notifications come through text before showing up in your online inbox 2. Try calling the 833-978-2511 number right at 8:00 AM sharp - I had better luck with that line than the main number 3. Keep detailed records of when you applied and any communications (or lack thereof) - this helped when I finally got through to someone The hardest part is the complete radio silence, but from everyone I know who's been through this recently, that seems to be standard operating procedure. Your claim is almost certainly just sitting in a queue somewhere. Stay strong and try not to refresh that account page 50 times a day like I did (easier said than done I know!).
