Mailed claim form disappeared? 4 weeks and EDD shows nothing pending

Getting desperate here! I mailed my initial unemployment claim form to EDD exactly 27 days ago, and it's like it vanished into thin air. I've checked UI Online daily - nothing shows up. No pending status, no confirmation emails, zero postal mail responses. I've tried calling at least 15 times (early morning, lunch, afternoon, you name it!) and can never get through to a human. Either get disconnected immediately or stuck in that endless 'we're experiencing high call volume' loop. The nearest office is 45 miles away and I'm struggling with transportation right now. My savings are dwindling fast and rent is due next week. Do I need to start the entire claim over again? Has anyone else had their paper application completely disappear? Any suggestions on what to do when you're completely ghosted by EDD?

I had a similar nightmare scenario last year. After 3 weeks of silence I discovered they never received my mailed claim (apparently lost in transit). My solution? File a new claim online through UI Online instead of mailing anything. It's MUCH faster and you get confirmation right away. You can take pictures of any supporting documents and upload them directly. Don't wait any longer hoping your paper form will magically appear in their system - it probably won't. The online system takes about 30 minutes to complete but saves weeks of waiting.

Thanks for responding! I was afraid of that... I only mailed it because the website kept crashing when I tried to apply online. Did you have to call them at all during the online process? I'm worried about missing something important and starting this nightmare over again.

That's horrible! I only did paper because the website kept freezing during my application. I'm going to try the online route again tonight.

You absolutely need to contact EDD directly about this. Paper applications do get processed, but they take significantly longer and are more prone to getting delayed or lost. Here's what you should do: 1. File a new claim online immediately (don't wait) 2. In the comments section, mention that you previously filed by mail on [exact date] but haven't received any confirmation 3. Try reaching EDD by phone specifically between 8:01-8:15am when lines first open - this is your best chance 4. Document everything - dates, confirmation numbers, etc. If you're still struggling to get through on the phones, I highly recommend checking out Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a service that helps you get through to an actual EDD representative without spending hours redialing. I was skeptical at first but it saved me days of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The most important thing is getting a confirmation number for your claim, whether that's through the online system or by speaking with a representative.

Thank you for such detailed advice! I just tried submitting online and got through the whole process this time (took forever but at least it worked). Now it shows my claim as pending and gave me a confirmation number. I still want to talk to someone about why my paper application disappeared though. I'll try that early morning call trick tomorrow, and if that doesn't work, I might try that Claimyr thing. Never heard of it before but I'm desperate at this point.

Did u try faxing them too? Sometimes old school works when everything else fails. My brother-in-law had his application disappear too but he faxed in a letter explaining the situation and they called him back within 2 days.

Faxing!? What year is this, 1995? EDD is still living in the stone age I swear. No offense but this is why the whole system is such a mess. People shouldn't need to hunt down a fax machine to get basic services working in 2025.

The mail system for EDD claims is notoriously unreliable. I worked as an employment counselor for years, and I can tell you that paper applications frequently get lost, misfiled, or significantly delayed. During high volume periods, it can take 6-8 weeks for a paper application to even be entered into their system. Based on your timeline (27 days), I strongly recommend: 1. File a new claim online immediately 2. Do NOT mention the previous paper claim in your new application as this can actually flag your account for review and cause further delays 3. Once your online claim is processed (usually 10-14 days), then call to explain the situation about your original paper application Eligibility interviews are currently being scheduled about 3-4 weeks out, so the sooner you get in the system properly, the better. Your benefit year will be backdated appropriately if you qualify.

Oh no... I already submitted online and mentioned my paper application in the comments section like someone else suggested. Will this cause problems? Should I try to call and explain, or just wait and see what happens with this new application?

I HAD THIS EXACT PROBLEM!!! Mailed my form in February and heard NOTHING for 5 weeks. Found out they never even received it!!! The entire unemployment system is designed to make us give up. I ended up having to drive 63 miles to my nearest office and wait in line for 3.5 hours just to speak to someone. When I finally got through to a rep, she told me they've been having 'mail processing issues' (whatever that means) and that I should have applied online. LIKE THAT WAS AN OPTION WHEN THEIR WEBSITE KEEPS CRASHING?? The whole system is rigged to deny people benefits. Sorry for the rant but I'm still angry about how they treated me.

Wow, that sounds even worse than my situation! I'm sorry you had to go through all that. I did manage to submit online finally (took 3 attempts but it went through). Did you eventually get your benefits after that office visit? I'm worried about having to drive to the office too since it's not close and my car isn't very reliable right now.

Have you checked your spam folder for emails from EDD? Sometimes their communications get filtered out. Also, did you create a UI Online account separate from submitting your paper application? If not, the system won't show your claim status until you create and link an account.

Yes, I've been checking spam obsessively! And I created my UI Online account before mailing the paper application, hoping I could track it that way. But nothing ever showed up. I just now reapplied online and got a confirmation number, so fingers crossed this one actually works!

Great news that you got your online application submitted! Keep that confirmation number safe - it's your proof that the claim exists. Regarding your comment about mentioning the paper application - don't stress too much. While the previous commenter is right that it *can* flag your account for review, it doesn't always happen. The most important thing is that you have a claim in the system now. The next step is likely certification. Once your claim is processed, you'll need to certify for benefits every two weeks through UI Online. Make sure you answer the work search questions accurately - this is where many people run into issues. The current requirement is to make at least 3 work search activities per week.

Thank you! I'm feeling a bit more hopeful now. I've already set a calendar reminder to check for certification every Sunday just to be safe. Quick question - since my original claim would have been from almost a month ago, can I still get benefits for those weeks if this new online claim is approved? Or am I just out those weeks of potential benefits?

You can absolutely request that your claim be backdated to when you first became unemployed (when you sent in the paper application). However, you'll need to call and speak to a representative to explain the situation and request backdating. When you do connect with someone, be prepared with the exact date you mailed your original application and your last day of work. After your current claim is processed and shows in the system, request backdating by calling or using the Contact EDD feature in your UI Online account. Look for the option about claim date issues. Backdated weeks will appear in your UI Online account once approved, and you'll need to certify for those weeks as well.
