ESD claim stuck at 6 weeks with no approval or payments - normal wait time?

I submitted my ESD unemployment claim exactly six weeks ago and haven't received a single payment or even formal approval yet. My online account just shows 'pending' status with no explanation. I've called at least 20 times but either get disconnected or told to wait for processing. Is this normal in 2025?? I'm seriously stressing about bills - rent is already late and my landlord is getting impatient. My savings are completely drained at this point. For those who filed recently, how long did your approval take? And what are people doing to survive these ridiculous wait times? Starting to wonder if I should just give up and take any job I can find, even though I'd be massively underemployed compared to my field.

same thing happening to me right now! 5 weeks in and nothing but 'processing' status. called 100x and cant get thru. this is so frustrating like do they expect us to just live on air while they take their sweet time?? i had to borrow money from my parents which was humiliating at my age.

Exactly! Do they think bills just magically stop while they process? I'm literally selling furniture at this point to make rent.

Your claim is likely stuck in adjudication. The standard processing time should be 2-3 weeks, but if there are any issues with your claim - like employment verification problems, incomplete information, or discrepancies in your work history - it can be flagged for manual review. This is extremely common, especially if you had multiple employers in your base year or if your separation reason isn't straightforward. Here's what you should check: 1. Look for any alerts or messages in your eServices account 2. Check if your claim shows 'adjudication' or 'pending issue' status 3. Verify all your employment information is accurate 4. Make sure you're completing your weekly claims despite not receiving payment Your payments will be retroactive once approved, but the wait is definitely challenging.

is it true that u still have to do the stupid job search activities even during adjudication? i've been doing them but seems pointless when i dont even know if ill get approved

DONT GIVE UP! My claim took SEVEN WEEKS last winter - absolutely ridiculous! I was about to lose my mind when it suddenly got approved with no explanation. The whole system is a joke but if your claim is legitimate they will pay eventually. The problem is ESD is still using outdated systems and they're perpetually understaffed. Make sure you're doing those 3 job searches each week and documenting everything!!

Seven weeks is insane! Did they at least backpay you for all the weeks you were waiting? And did they ever explain the delay?

I work as an employment counselor, and unfortunately, 4-6 week wait times have become fairly standard for claims that require any level of adjudication (which is about 40% of all claims currently). The ESD system was updated in late 2024, but the transition created more backlogs than solutions. That said, at 6 weeks, you should be proactive. Here's what I recommend: 1. Continue filing your weekly claims without fail 2. Check your Secure Message Center daily for requests for information 3. If there's a specific issue flagged for adjudication, you can upload supporting documentation proactively 4. Make sure your phone number and address are current in the system For immediate financial assistance, consider: - Emergency assistance through DSHS (can help with rent/utilities) - Food banks and meal programs - Utility company hardship programs - Temporary employment through staffing agencies while you wait Your claim will be backdated to your initial filing date once approved.

Thank you for this detailed response. I didn't know about the DSHS emergency assistance - I'll look into that today. Any idea if calling repeatedly helps or is it just wasting time at this point?

I was stuck in adjudication for 8 weeks until I finally got through to an actual ESD agent who fixed it in 5 minutes. Turns out there was a simple verification issue they could have resolved weeks earlier if I could have spoken to someone. After trying for weeks with no success getting through their phone lines, I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an ESD agent without the endless hold times. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Literally had my issues resolved that same day and got my first payment 3 days later with all back payments. Wish I'd known about it sooner instead of stressing for 2 months.

Is this service legit??? Sounds too good to be true considering how impossible it is to get through to ESD. Did they need a bunch of personal info?

@jumpjack52 Yes, it's legit - they just connect you through to ESD's actual phone system but bypass the wait. You still talk directly with regular ESD agents who can access your claim. They don't need access to your account or anything like that. Was honestly a lifesaver for me after weeks of trying to get through.

I second this - used Claimyr last month when my standby status wasn't properly applied to my claim. Got through to ESD in about 25 minutes versus the 3+ hours I was spending trying to get through on my own (and usually getting disconnected). The agent was able to fix everything while I was on the phone.

The WorkSource orientation requirement was reinstated in April 2025. You should have received a notification if you're required to attend an orientation session. It's typically required by the 5th week of your claim. You can check if this is holding up your claim by looking at your eServices account under "Requirements."

Update: I FINALLY got through to ESD this morning after trying the Claimyr service that was mentioned. Turns out my claim was flagged because my previous employer disputed my reason for separation (they claimed I quit when I was actually laid off). The agent was able to escalate my adjudication and said I should have a decision within 5-7 business days. Will update again when I hear something. Thanks everyone for your help - at least now I know what's happening!

That's great that you got through! Employer disputes are one of the most common reasons for delays. Make sure you have any documentation regarding your layoff ready (emails, termination letter, etc.) in case they need to contact you for an adjudication interview. The fact that your claim has been escalated is a very good sign.

im gonna try that service too, this is getting ridiculous. did u at least get any info on the backpay for all those weeks? will they pay interest for making us wait so long? they should!

They definitely don't pay interest (though they SHOULD)! But yes, they do backpay all weeks from your initial filing date as long as you've been submitting your weekly claims consistently. Just make absolutely sure you haven't missed filing any weekly claims or that will cause more problems.
