Pregnancy disability claim confusion - use old EDD account # from unemployment?

I'm due in March and my doctor's office is handling my pregnancy disability claim through their disability department (they don't do online EDD submissions, only paper forms). I'm staring at this form and totally confused about the 'EDD Customer Account Number' section. Back in 2025 I had an unemployment claim when my company downsized. Should I use that same account number for this pregnancy disability claim? They're completely different benefits but both through EDD, right? I don't want to mess this up and delay my benefits. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? Did you use your old unemployment account number or leave it blank?

yes use same # its all the same edd system even tho different benefits they track u with that #

Thank you!! I was worried it might cause some system error or something if I used the unemployment number for disability.

The EDD Customer Account Number is a unique identifier that stays with you across all EDD programs (unemployment, disability, paid family leave). Definitely use the same number you used for unemployment. It helps EDD connect all your claims and information in their system. Your pregnancy disability claim (SDI) and later your baby bonding (PFL) will all be linked to this same account number. Make sure you're filling out the DE2501 form correctly too - that's the one for pregnancy disability. Your doctor will need to complete their portion with your expected delivery date and when you became disabled due to pregnancy.

Thanks! Yes it's the DE2501 form. I appreciate the confirmation. I wasn't sure if it would somehow conflict with the old unemployment claim.

I just went through this last month!!! It's SO confusing how nothing is explained properly on these forms!! I actually left it blank because I couldn't find my old unemployment number and my claim was delayed for TWO WEEKS while they tracked down my info. Definitely use your old number if you have it. Also make sure your doctor fills out their part completely - my first form got rejected because my OB didn't check one stupid little box about when my disability started. 🤦‍♀️

Omg thank you for the warning! I'll double check everything with my doctor. Two weeks delay sounds awful!

BEWARE - using paper forms with EDD is a NIGHTMARE!!! I did this last year with my pregnancy and they "lost" my paperwork TWICE. Then they claimed they never received the doctor's section even though we sent it all together. I spent WEEKS trying to get through on the phone. Ended up not getting paid until 6 weeks after my baby was born. The system is completely broken.

This happened to me too! I'm convinced they just throw half the mail directly in the trash. Spent my entire maternity leave stressed about money instead of enjoying time with my baby.

When I had my baby last April, I struggled to reach EDD when my doctor's office messed up my paperwork (they forgot to sign a section). I discovered this service called Claimyr that connected me to an EDD rep in about 15 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. It literally saved my claim from being stuck in processing purgatory for weeks. If you run into any issues with your claim, check out their video demo at https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 or their website claimyr.com. Totally worth it when you're desperate to talk to someone at EDD!

I've never heard of this but might need it if my claim gets delayed. Thanks for sharing! Did they resolve your issue right away once you got through?

Yes! The EDD rep was able to update my file with the correct information and pushed my claim through. It was processed within 3 days after that call. Definitely better than waiting weeks for them to maybe process a mailed form.

To clarify the form confusion: yes, use your previous EDD Customer Account Number from unemployment. For pregnancy disability (SDI) that transitions to baby bonding (PFL), here's what to expect: 1. Your doctor submits the DE2501 for pregnancy disability (4 weeks before due date typically) 2. After birth, your doctor updates your disability end date 3. You file DE2508 form for baby bonding/PFL (can be done online even if initial SDI was paper) 4. Your Account Number stays the same throughout Pro tip: Make copies of EVERYTHING you and your doctor submit, and follow up within 7-10 days if you don't see it processed in your online account. The paper system is unfortunately prone to delays.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I didn't realize I could do the baby bonding part online even if the disability part is on paper. And I'll definitely make copies of everything!

Amina Bah

when i had my twins last year i got so confused between all these different forms!! the pregnancy disability (SDI) and paid family leave (PFL) are totally separate but use the same account. make sure you know that pregnancy disability is for BEFORE and a little after birth while PFL/baby bonding is for the weeks after that. and its not automatic you have to apply for both separately!! they dont tell you this stuff i missed out on like 2 weeks of money cause i didnt know

Thank you for pointing this out! I definitely need to make sure I apply for both.

Excellent point. Many people don't realize these are separate benefits that require separate applications. Pregnancy Disability (SDI) can start up to 4 weeks before your due date with normal pregnancy, and continues for 6-8 weeks after birth (depending on delivery type). Then baby bonding (PFL) gives you 8 weeks that can be used all at once or split up within the first year.

Just to add one more important tip: when your doctor's office submits the paperwork, ask them to provide you with a copy AND confirm whether they'll be handling the "continuing certifications" that may be required by EDD. Some medical offices only submit the initial form but expect patients to handle the rest. This trips up a lot of new moms because the EDD may request additional certifications, especially for claims that extend beyond the standard 6-8 weeks postpartum.

I didn't even know about continuing certifications! I'll definitely ask about this at my next appointment. Thank you!

I just went thru this whole process and gave birth 3 months ago. Honestly the hardest part was transitioning from pregnancy disability to baby bonding! Nobody tells you that you have to CALL to close out your disability claim before the baby bonding will process. I just kept checking online wondering why my PFL claim was stuck pending for weeks. Finally figured it out and got backpaid but it was so stressful with a newborn!

Thank you for this warning! I had no idea you had to call to close out the disability claim. This whole process seems unnecessarily complicated.

It really is!! And congrats on your baby BTW!! Despite all the EDD hassle, this time is so precious. Try not to let the paperwork stress take away from enjoying those first weeks! ❤️
