How to cancel online PFL claim with CA EDD and submit paper form instead?

Hey everyone, I need some advice about canceling an online claim for Paid Family Leave (PFL). I started filling out the form online, but then my doctor told me it needs to be mailed in instead. The doctor's part has to be handwritten and signed, not stamped. I'm worried about having duplicate submissions now. Has anyone dealt with this before? What's the best way to cancel the online claim and make sure everything goes smoothly with the mailed-in form? Also, I lost my old EDD debit card. Will they send me a new one if I'm approved for PFL? Any tips on dealing with the EDD would be really helpful!

Ugh, the EDD and their paperwork nightmares! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I've been there before. Your best bet is to call them directly and explain the situation. They can cancel the online claim for you and make a note on your account. Just be prepared to wait on hold for like... forever.

Friendly reminder to everyone dealing with EDD: DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Every call, every letter, every form. You never know when you'll need to prove something later. Stay strong, we're all in this together! πŸ’ͺ

Amen to that! Documentation is key when dealing with bureaucratic systems. It's our best defense!

I'm in the same boat with the debit card issue. Lost mine ages ago and been too lazy to get a new one. Let us know how long it takes to get the new one!

Same here! It's like once you lose it, it's such a hassle to get another.

Hey OP, just a heads up - make sure you keep track of all the dates: when you submitted the online claim, when you called to cancel it, when you mail the paper form, etc. It might come in handy if there are any issues later.

I found a way to get through! There's this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that calls for you, waits on hold, and then connects you when a real person picks up. It costs $20 but saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Wait, seriously? Is that even legit? Sounds too good to be true.

I was skeptical too, but it worked for me. You can check their reviews online. Saved me a ton of time and headache.

In terms of reaching out to EDD, Claimyr seems like a useful tool, especially if you're struggling to get in touch with them. However, it's important to weigh the costs and benefits. $20 can be a significant amount for some, so consider exhausting free options like calling at different times of the day before using paid services.

I had a similar issue last year. Here's what you need to do: 1. Call EDD ASAP to cancel the online claim. Get a confirmation number. 2. Fill out your part of the paper form carefully. 3. When you get the form back from your doctor, double-check everything. 4. Make copies of EVERYTHING before mailing. 5. Send it certified mail with return receipt. 6. Keep checking your EDD portal for updates. For the debit card, you'll probably need to request a new one. Mention it when you call about canceling the online claim. They might be able to process both at the same time. Good luck! The EDD can be a real pain, but stay persistent!

Thanks for the detailed advice! I'll definitely follow these steps. Do you remember how long it took for them to process your claim after you mailed it in?

It took about 3 weeks for me, but I've heard it can vary. Just keep an eye on your portal and don't be afraid to follow up if it seems to be taking too long.

This is solid advice! I'd add one thing: take pictures of the completed form before mailing it. You never know when you might need proof of what you sent.

Anyone else feel like the EDD system is designed to be as confusing as possible? It's like they're trying to discourage people from claiming benefits they're entitled to. πŸ€”

It's not just EDD, it's all government systems. They're stuck in the stone age I stg

Regarding your lost EDD debit card, the standard process involves requesting a replacement either through their phone system or online via your portal. It's great to hear they are sending a new one after you called. Typically, it takes about 7-10 business days to receive it. Make sure to activate it once it arrives, and keep it in a safe place to avoid the hassle again.

Pro tip: If you're mailing in forms, always use certified mail with return receipt. It's a lifesaver if they claim they never received your paperwork. Learned that the hard way πŸ˜…

Totally agree with this! It's saved me more than once. EDD can sometimes 'lose' documents, so it's best to cover your bases.

Has anyone else noticed that the EDD website is always "under maintenance" when you actually need to use it? πŸ™„ It's like they're trolling us at this point.

omg yes! It's always down on weekends when I have time to deal with this stuff 😀

Pro tip: try accessing the site super early in the morning. Like 5am early. It's usually working then and way faster.

It’s so frustrating! I wonder if they’re aware of how this affects people who rely on their service.

Update: I called EDD (finally got through!) and they said they'll cancel the online claim. They're sending me a new debit card too. Thanks for all the advice, everyone!

Congrats on getting through! How long were you on hold?

Only about 20 minutes! I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Totally worth it.

That's awesome that you got through so quickly with Claimyr! I've been struggling to reach EDD for weeks about my own PFL claim. Just to add to the great advice already given - when you mail in your paper form, I'd suggest also taking photos of every page before sending it. I learned this tip from a coworker who had her forms "lost" twice by EDD. Having digital copies saved her when she had to prove what she originally submitted. Also, if your doctor's office is slow with paperwork, don't be afraid to follow up with them - sometimes they forget about these forms sitting on their desk!

Great additional tips! The photo documentation idea is brilliant - I wish I had thought of that earlier. And you're so right about following up with doctor's offices. Mine actually forgot about my form for a whole week until I called to check on it. It's crazy how much we have to stay on top of everything ourselves just to get the benefits we're entitled to. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago! The duplicate submission worry is totally valid - I was stressed about the same thing. When I called EDD to cancel my online claim, the rep told me that as long as you get it canceled before they start processing it, you're good to go. They gave me a cancellation confirmation number which I kept in my records (definitely write that down!). One thing I wish I had known - make sure your doctor knows they need to use BLACK ink only for their signature and any handwritten parts. My doctor used blue ink the first time and EDD sent it back, which delayed everything by another 2 weeks. Also, if you're mailing it in, I'd recommend using a tracking service so you know exactly when it arrives. The peace of mind is worth the extra few bucks! Hope this helps and good luck with your claim! 🀞

This is such helpful advice! The black ink requirement is something I never would have thought of - thanks for sharing that detail. It's frustrating how these little technicalities can cause such big delays, but at least now I know what to watch out for. I'm definitely going to make sure my doctor uses black ink and ask them specifically about it when I drop off the form. The tracking idea is smart too - I'd rather spend a few extra dollars than worry about whether it got there safely. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!

Wow, this thread has been so helpful! I'm dealing with a similar situation where I need to switch from online to paper submission for my PFL claim. Reading through everyone's experiences has given me a much clearer game plan. One question I have - for those who successfully made the switch, did EDD give you any kind of timeline for when the online claim would be fully canceled from their system? I'm paranoid about there being some overlap or confusion on their end. Also, has anyone had issues with their doctor's office charging extra fees for filling out the paper forms? My doctor's office mentioned something about an "administrative fee" which caught me off guard. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - this community is a lifesaver when dealing with EDD's maze of bureaucracy! πŸ™
