How to change return-to-work date on EDD PFL baby bonding claim when online access isn't working?

Help! I started baby bonding PFL in January and initially put Feb 28th as my return-to-work date. My employer just approved extending my leave until March 25th, but I have no idea how to update this on my PFL claim! I tried going to the local EDD office yesterday (waste of 2 hours) and the staff there just shrugged and said they don't handle PFL return date changes on-site. They gave me 3 options: 1. Mail in a written request (seems so unreliable?) 2. Do it online (impossible - my full legal name has 26 characters and ID.me keeps rejecting it as "not matching records" so I can't even create an online account) 3. Call EDD directly (I've tried calling FIFTEEN times over 3 days and either get disconnected or am on hold until the office closes) I'm seriously stressing because my original return date is coming up soon, and I don't want my benefits to stop when I'm legitimately still on approved leave. Has anyone successfully changed their return date? What actually worked?

OMG I had literally the EXACT same problem last year!!! EDD is the WORST with this stuff. I ended up having to fax (yes, FAX in 2025!!) a signed letter with my claim ID, original return date, and new return date to the PFL office. It took them 9 days to process but it actually worked. The fax number was on one of those PFL papers they sent when your claim was approved.

Thank you! I didn't even think about faxing... do you remember which form had the fax number? I have a stack of PFL papers and I'm too sleep deprived to go through them all right now 😩

You need to submit a DE 2501F-C form (Change in Family Leave Return Date). It's not well advertised but it's the official way to update your return date for baby bonding. You can download it from the EDD website, fill it out, and mail it to the PFL office in San Diego. Make sure you include your claim ID number, SSN, and contact information. They recommend sending it at least 10 business days before your original return date. If you can't access your account online, the mail option is actually the most reliable. Calling is nearly impossible these days with their staff shortages.

This isn't right. There is no DE 2501F-C form specifically for changing return dates. The DE 2501F is the original Paid Family Leave claim form, but there's no special version for changes. You have to either call or write a letter explaining the situation. Source: just went through this last month.

I had a similar issue with ID.me not accepting my name (I have a hyphenated last name that causes problems). If you still want to try the online route, contact ID.me support directly. They can manually verify your identity through a video call process that bypasses the automated system. Takes about 30 minutes but then you'll have full online access to your EDD account where you can submit the return date change request. Alternatively, have you tried calling right when they open at 8:00am? I've had better luck getting through during the first 15 minutes they're open.

I tried calling at 8am sharp twice this week and still got the "we're experiencing higher than normal call volume" message and then it disconnected me! So frustrating. I might try the ID.me support though, didn't know that was an option. Thanks!

hve u tried Claimyr? i couldnt get thru to EDD for my disability to pFL transition for like a week straight and my friend told me about this service. they basically call EDD for you and when they get an agent they connect you. worked for me after trying for days by myself. they have a video showing how it works here https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 and their site is claimyr.com i was skeptical but got connected in like 25 min when i had been trying for days

Is this legit? Sounds like a scam to me. Why would you pay someone else to call EDD when you can do it yourself for free??

My boss literally just went through this!!! She said the fastest way was sending a CERTIFIED letter (with tracking) to the PFL office with all her info and explicit request to change return date. Im pretty sure you need: - Full name - SSN - Claim ID - Original return date - New return date - Brief explanation - Your signature - Date She got confirmation in like 7-8 days? But she also included her email address and requested email confirmation specifically.

This is super helpful, thank you! Certified mail makes sense so I know they actually received it. Did she continue to certify for benefits while waiting for the change to process?

0 coins

To answer the question about whether you should keep certifying - YES, absolutely continue certifying for benefits while your return date change is being processed. You need to maintain continuous certification even during the change request period. One more tip: Whatever method you choose (mail, fax, etc.), keep detailed records of EVERYTHING. Take photos/scans of all documents you send, note dates/times of submission, and follow up if you don't receive confirmation within 10 business days. The PFL office can backdate changes if there's a processing delay on their end, but they won't if you miss certifications.

Thank you so much! I'll definitely keep certifying and document everything. I think I'm going to try both the certified mail AND the fax approach just to be safe. This whole system is so stressful to navigate.

i went thru this whole mess when my twins were born and my leave got extended. Nobody mentions this but u can also go to ur doctor who signed ur original pfl paperwork and have them submit an extension on ur behalf. That worked for me cuz my doc's office has a dedicated person who deals with EDD all day. might be easier than trying to do it urself

That's only for disability leave though, not baby bonding PFL. Medical extensions work differently than just changing a return-to-work date for bonding leave. For regular PFL bonding time, there's no doctor involvement once you've transitioned from disability to bonding.

Just wanted to update everyone on what's actually correct here (I'm an HR benefits manager who deals with this regularly): 1. For baby bonding PFL return date changes, you need to either call PFL directly, use your online account, or submit a written request by mail/fax. 2. There is NO specific form for return date changes, despite what someone suggested above. You simply write a letter with your claim info and the date change request. 3. The PFL specific fax number is 1-916-319-4576. This is usually the fastest method. 4. Always continue certifying while waiting for the change to process. 5. If you're unable to create an online account due to ID.me issues, you can request an exception process through the ID.me help center. Hope this helps clear up any confusion!

This is incredibly helpful! Thank you so much for the clear information and especially for that fax number. I'm going to try faxing my request tomorrow. Fingers crossed this works!

I'm dealing with something similar right now! My baby bonding leave was supposed to end next week but my employer just approved an extension. Reading through all these responses is super helpful - I had no idea about the fax option. One thing I wanted to add is that when I called my local EDD office, they mentioned that if you're getting close to your original return date and haven't heard back about your change request, you should call the PFL customer service line (not the main EDD number) at 1-877-238-4373. They said this line is specifically for PFL issues and sometimes has shorter wait times than the general EDD line. Also, has anyone had success with sending the request via email? I know it's probably not official but wondering if anyone has tried that route.

Thanks for sharing that PFL-specific number! I hadn't seen that one mentioned before. I tried calling the main EDD line so many times but didn't know there was a dedicated PFL customer service line. Definitely going to try that too. As for email, I don't think EDD accepts official requests via email for benefit changes - everything I've read says they only accept written requests through mail or fax for legal/security reasons. But it might be worth calling that PFL line you mentioned to ask directly! Really appreciate you sharing your experience - it's so helpful to know I'm not the only one dealing with this mess right now 😅

Just wanted to share my recent experience with this exact issue! I went through the same nightmare trying to change my return date for baby bonding PFL last month. What finally worked for me was the fax approach that @Fatima Al-Hashimi mentioned - using that PFL fax number 1-916-319-4576. I sent a simple letter with all my info (claim ID, SSN, original return date, new return date, brief explanation) and got confirmation within 6 business days via mail. The key thing I learned is to be very specific in your letter - don't just say "extend my leave," but clearly state "I am requesting to change my return-to-work date from [original date] to [new date] for my baby bonding PFL claim." Also include your phone number and email if you want them to contact you about the change. One tip that helped me: I called that PFL-specific number @Freya Collins mentioned (1-877-238-4373) about 3 days after faxing to confirm they received it. The wait was still long but not as bad as the main EDD line, and they were able to see my request in their system. Hang in there - the system is frustrating but it does eventually work! Keep certifying in the meantime.

This is such a relief to read! I was starting to panic that I'd never get this sorted out before my original return date. Thank you for the specific wording suggestion - that's exactly what I was struggling with in my letter. I kept going in circles trying to explain the whole situation instead of just being direct about what I need changed. I'm definitely going to fax my request using that format tomorrow, and then follow up with a call to that PFL number to confirm receipt. It's so reassuring to hear from someone who actually got it resolved recently. The whole process feels so overwhelming when you're sleep deprived with a new baby! Thanks again for sharing your experience - this gives me hope that I can actually get this figured out! 🙏

I'm going through this exact same situation right now and honestly feeling so overwhelmed! My baby bonding leave was supposed to end next week but my employer just approved extending it through April 15th. Reading through everyone's responses has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea there were so many different approaches to try. The fax option sounds like it might be my best bet since I'm also having issues with the ID.me verification (my maiden name is still on some records and it's causing conflicts). Quick question for those who successfully used the fax method - did you include any documentation from your employer showing the approved extension, or just your own letter requesting the change? I want to make sure I include everything they might need to process it quickly. Also, @Nathan Kim, when you called to confirm they received your fax, did they give you any kind of confirmation number or just verbal confirmation? I want to make sure I have proper documentation that my request was received. Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences - it's such a relief to know this can actually be resolved!

Hi @McKenzie Shade! I'm new to this community but just went through something similar with my PFL claim. From what I've learned reading through this thread, it sounds like you just need to send your own letter requesting the change - I don't think you need employer documentation since the PFL office is only concerned with updating your claim dates, not verifying why you're extending. The fax approach seems to be working well for people here. I'd suggest including all the basics everyone mentioned: your full name, SSN, claim ID, original return date, new return date (April 15th), and a brief explanation. Keep it simple and direct like @Nathan Kim suggested. I m'actually in a similar boat with ID.me issues my (hyphenated name keeps getting rejected ,)so I m'planning to try the fax method too based on all the positive feedback here. Good luck to both of us! 🤞 Has anyone had experience with how long the fax confirmation usually takes to show up in the system when you call to check?

I'm new here but dealing with the exact same issue! My baby bonding PFL was supposed to end March 15th but I just got approval to extend until April 10th. After reading through all these responses, I'm feeling way more confident about getting this resolved. I've been trying to call EDD for over a week with no luck - just endless hold music or disconnections. The online portal won't work for me either because of some weird glitch with my address verification. I was starting to panic thinking my benefits would just stop! Based on everyone's advice here, I'm going to try the fax approach first using that 1-916-319-4576 number that @Fatima Al-Hashimi shared. I'll write a simple, direct letter with all my claim info and the date change request, then follow up with a call to that PFL-specific line (1-877-238-4373) a few days later to confirm they received it. This community is amazing - thank you all for sharing your real experiences instead of just the generic "call EDD" advice you get everywhere else! It's so reassuring to know other people have actually gotten through this process successfully. Will definitely update once I hear back about my request!

Welcome to the community @Leo Simmons! I'm also new here and dealing with PFL extension issues - it's such a relief to find people who actually understand how frustrating this process is! Your plan sounds solid based on everything I've read in this thread. The fax approach seems to be the most reliable option when online access isn't working. I'm in a similar situation with my return date coming up soon and was feeling totally lost until I found this discussion. One thing I noticed from reading through everyone's experiences is that it's really important to keep certifying for benefits while waiting for the change to process, even if your original return date passes. @Amara Chukwu mentioned earlier that EDD can backdate changes if there s'a processing delay on their end, but only if you maintain continuous certification. Good luck with your fax request! Hopefully we ll'both get this sorted out soon. Please do update us when you hear back - it would be helpful to know how long the current processing times are! 🤞

I'm new here but going through this exact same nightmare right now! My baby bonding leave was supposed to end this Friday but my employer just approved extending it through April 2nd. I've been panicking all week trying to figure out how to update my return date with EDD. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been such a lifesaver - I had no idea about the fax option or that PFL-specific phone number. The regular EDD line has been completely useless (I've tried calling 12 times this week with zero success). Based on all the advice here, I'm going to fax my request tomorrow using that 1-916-319-4576 number. I'll include my claim ID, SSN, original vs new return dates, and keep it simple and direct like @Nathan Kim suggested. Then I'll follow up with a call to 1-877-238-4373 in a few days to confirm they received it. Thank you all SO much for sharing your real experiences with this process! It's incredibly stressful dealing with this while caring for a newborn, and knowing that other people have successfully gotten through it gives me hope. Will definitely update when I hear back about my request!

Welcome to the community @KingKongZilla! I'm also new here and just went through a similar situation with my PFL return date change. Your plan sounds perfect based on everything I've learned from this thread - the fax approach really seems to be the most reliable method when you can't get through by phone or online. One small tip I picked up from reading through all the responses: when you write your fax letter, make sure to include your phone number and email address too. @Nathan Kim mentioned this helped with getting confirmation, and a few others said EDD sometimes reaches out via phone if they need any clarification. It s'such a relief to find this community where people actually share what worked for them instead of just the standard call "EDD advice" that s'everywhere else! The stress of dealing with this while caring for a newborn is no joke. Fingers crossed your fax goes through smoothly - please keep us updated on how it goes! 🤞

I'm also new to this community and currently dealing with this exact issue! My baby bonding PFL was supposed to end March 20th but I just got employer approval to extend through April 8th. After reading through all these incredibly helpful responses, I feel so much more prepared to tackle this. I've been trying to call EDD for over a week with absolutely no success - just endless hold music or immediate disconnections. The online portal won't let me log in either due to some ID verification issues. Based on everyone's shared experiences here, I'm planning to: 1. Fax a simple, direct letter to 1-916-319-4576 with all my claim details and the specific date change request 2. Follow up with a call to the PFL-specific line (1-877-238-4373) in about 3-4 days to confirm receipt 3. Keep certifying for benefits throughout the process This thread has been such a lifeline! It's so reassuring to read about people who actually got through this process successfully instead of just getting the generic "call EDD" advice everywhere else. The stress of navigating this bureaucracy while sleep-deprived with a newborn is overwhelming. Thank you all for sharing your real experiences and practical solutions. I'll definitely update once I hear back about my request!

Welcome @Javier Mendoza! I'm also brand new to this community and dealing with the exact same PFL return date nightmare. Your plan sounds spot-on based on everything I've learned from reading through this amazing thread. I'm in almost the identical situation - my baby bonding leave was supposed to end next week but just got extended, and I've had zero luck with phone calls or online access. The fax approach everyone's recommending here seems like our best bet! One thing that stood out to me from @Nathan Kim s'successful experience was being really specific with the wording - stating exactly I "am requesting to change my return-to-work date from [old date] to [new date] rather" than just saying you want to extend leave. That seems like it could help avoid any confusion or delays in processing. It s'such a relief to find people who have actually navigated this successfully! The whole system feels so impossible when you re'dealing with a newborn and sleep deprivation. Fingers crossed both our fax requests go smoothly - definitely keep us posted on your results! 🤞

I'm also new here and going through this exact same situation! My baby bonding leave was supposed to end this week but my employer just approved extending it until April 12th. I've been absolutely panicking trying to figure out how to get my return date changed with EDD. After reading through everyone's experiences, I feel so much more hopeful! I had no idea about the fax option or that PFL-specific phone number. Based on all the great advice here, I'm going to fax my request using that 1-916-319-4576 number tomorrow. I'll keep it simple and direct like @Nathan Kim suggested: claim ID, SSN, clear statement requesting change from [original date] to [new date], plus my contact info. Then follow up with the PFL line in a few days to confirm they got it. This community is incredible - thank you all for sharing what actually worked instead of just the usual "call EDD" non-advice you get everywhere else! Welcome to the community @GalacticGuardian! I'm also completely new here and just discovered this thread while frantically searching for help with my own PFL return date change nightmare. Your situation sounds almost identical to mine - my baby bonding leave was supposed to end next Friday but I just got employer approval to extend through April 15th. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been such a game changer! I had no clue about any of these alternative approaches. I've been stuck in the same endless loop of trying to call EDD with absolutely zero success - just busy signals, hold music that goes nowhere, or immediate disconnections. The online portal is also a complete dead end for me due to ID verification issues. Your plan sounds perfect based on all the successful stories shared here. I'm definitely going to follow the same approach - fax that simple, direct letter to 1-916-319-4576 with all the specifics everyone mentioned, then follow up with the PFL-specific line to confirm receipt. The fact that multiple people have actually gotten this to work gives me so much hope! It's amazing to finally find real people sharing practical solutions instead of just the generic "contact EDD" advice that's everywhere else. Managing this bureaucratic mess while sleep-deprived with a newborn feels impossible, but knowing others have made it through successfully is incredibly reassuring. I'm also dealing with this exact situation right now and this thread has been a total lifesaver! My baby bonding PFL was supposed to end tomorrow but I just got approval from my employer to extend until April 18th. I've been in complete panic mode trying to figure out how to update my return date. Like so many others here, I've had zero luck with phone calls (tried the main EDD line probably 20 times over the past week) and can't access anything online due to ongoing ID.me verification problems with my hyphenated last name. Based on all the incredible advice shared here, I'm planning to fax my request first thing Monday morning using that 1-916-319-4576 number. I'll use the simple, direct format that @Nathan Kim recommended - just the essential info with a clear statement requesting the date change from my original return date to April 18th. Then I'll follow up with a call to that PFL-specific line (1-877-238-4373) later in the week to confirm they received it. This community is amazing! It's such a relief to find real parents who have actually navigated this bureaucratic nightmare successfully. The stress of dealing with this while caring for a newborn is overwhelming, but reading everyone's experiences gives me hope that this can actually get resolved. Welcome @StellarSurfer! I'm also brand new to this community and just discovered this incredibly helpful thread while desperately searching for solutions to my own PFL return date change crisis. Your situation sounds almost exactly like mine - my baby bonding leave was supposed to end this Friday but I just got employer approval to extend through April 22nd. It's so frustrating dealing with this bureaucracy when you're already exhausted from caring for a newborn! Your plan sounds perfect based on all the success stories shared here. The fax approach using that 1-916-319-4576 number really seems to be the most reliable method when everything else fails. I'm also new here and going through this exact same stressful situation! My baby bonding PFL was supposed to end this Thursday but my employer just approved extending it until April 30th. I've been in full panic mode trying to figure out how to get my return date updated before my benefits stop. Like everyone else, I've had absolutely zero luck calling EDD - I've tried at least 25 times over the past two weeks and either get busy signals, endless hold music, or sudden disconnections. The online portal won't work for me either because of some ID verification issue that keeps rejecting my information. This thread has been a complete game-changer! I had no clue about the fax option or that dedicated PFL phone number. Based on all the success stories shared here, I'm definitely going to fax my request to 1-916-319-4576 tomorrow morning. I'll keep it simple and direct like @Nathan Kim suggested - just include my claim ID, SSN, original return date vs new return date (April 30th), and a clear request for the change. The advice about following up with a call to 1-877-238-4373 to confirm receipt also sounds smart. And I'll definitely keep certifying for benefits while waiting for the change to process based on what @Amara Chukwu mentioned about maintaining continuous certification.
