Need EDD PFL direct phone number to extend my baby bonding leave - urgent!

Pulling my hair out trying to get this right! I extended my baby bonding PFL by one extra week (baby caught RSV so I need more time home), but I can't figure out how to update my claim so I don't miss payment. The main EDD number just puts me in endless hold cycles before disconnecting. Does anyone have a DIRECT number to reach someone at the EDD PFL department? I've tried the general line (1-877-238-4373) like 15 times already, and I've sent messages through UI Online that nobody responds to. My last payment is supposed to hit tomorrow, and I really need this extension processed ASAP. We're already stretching our budget thin with formula costs (why is it so expensive?!?), and missing even one week of benefits would be devastating. Any secret numbers or tips for actually reaching a human being at EDD? Thanks!!

There's no special direct number for PFL that I know of. They make it nearly impossible to talk to anyone on purpose! I had to keep calling that same number over and over for my maternity transition. Try calling right when they open at 8am.

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. I tried the 8am thing twice this week but still couldn't get through. I'll keep trying I guess...

u dont actually need to talk to anyone to extend PFL! just submit a new de2501f form marking it as an extension. thats what i did for my twins last year. much easier than calling.

This is incorrect information. The DE2501F is for Disability Insurance claims, not Paid Family Leave. For PFL extensions, you need to file a new PFL claim using form DE2508 and indicate it's for the same care recipient/bonding with the same child. The timeline matters too - you need to file before your current claim period ends.

I was in the exact same situation last month trying to extend my bonding time. I wasted literally 5 days trying to call that useless EDD number, getting disconnected every single time after 45+ min holds. It was INFURIATING!!!! I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 The agent was able to process my extension right away and I didn't miss any payments. Seriously saved my sanity because I was ready to scream after all those failed calls.

Is that service legit though? Seems sketchy that you'd need to pay someone just to talk to a govt agency 🤔

It's legitimate - they just use some tech solution to navigate the phone system. Totally worth it to me rather than wasting days trying to call myself. The agent I got was super helpful and fixed my extension immediately.

To properly extend your PFL baby bonding claim, you need to: 1. File a new PFL claim using form DE2508 before your current claim period ends 2. Mark it as the same care recipient/child as your original claim 3. Submit any supporting documentation for the medical reason (like your baby's RSV diagnosis) The best way to reach EDD is unfortunately still the main line (1-877-238-4373), but try calling Tuesday-Thursday between 8:00-8:30am or 4:00-4:30pm when call volumes are typically lower. Avoid Mondays and Fridays when they're swamped. Also, check your UI Online account daily - sometimes they'll post messages there requesting additional information rather than calling you.

Thank you so much for this detailed help! I had no idea I needed to file a whole new claim with the DE2508 - I thought I could just call to extend. I'll fill out that form right away and try those specific calling times. Really appreciate the clear instructions!

The EDD system is designed to be frustrating and make people give up. They WANT you to get tired of calling so they don't have to pay your benefits!!!! I went through this nightmare last year and it took me THREE WEEKS to get someone on the phone about my maternity leave transition. By then I had already missed payments and had to use credit cards to buy groceries. The whole system is corrupt and designed to fail.

Totally agree. When I was trying to transition from SDI to PFL after having my baby, nobody told me I needed to file a whole separate claim. Lost two weeks of payments because of their terrible communication. They should make this stuff clearer for new parents!

I work with EDD claims regularly, and I can provide some accurate information here: 1. For baby bonding PFL extensions in 2025, you must file a new claim using form DE2508 if you're extending beyond your initially approved period. This must be done before your current claim period ends. 2. For RSV situations specifically, you actually have two options: - File a new PFL claim for baby bonding (extending your bonding time) - OR file a PFL claim for caregiving (since the baby has a medical condition) The caregiving option requires a medical certification from your baby's doctor using Section B of the DE2508 form. This might be better in your case because it doesn't count against your 8-week baby bonding allocation. 3. For fastest processing, submit through your UI Online account and upload any supporting documentation there as well. 4. If you absolutely must speak with someone, the most reliable method is calling at 8:01am exactly when the lines open, but prepare to redial multiple times.

This is incredibly helpful! I had no idea I could file for caregiving instead of using up my bonding time. My pediatrician already gave me a note about the RSV, so I'll use that for the DE2508 form. Thank you so much for explaining the difference!

i just went thru this whole process and found out you can actually update your claim online now! login to your UI online account, go to contact us, then select paid family leave from dropdown, then select extend benefits as reason. worked for me without calling at all

This is partially correct. You can request an extension through UI Online, but you'll still need to provide documentation. For baby bonding extensions in 2025, you need to specify the same child and reason code. For medical situations like the OP's baby with RSV, you'd need to upload the medical certification. The online option is certainly easier than calling, but you still need to complete all the required documentation.

When my twins were sick last year I had the same problem! So frustrating right? I ended up going to the actual EDD office in person. Had to wait for 2 hours but at least I finally talked to someone who could help. If you have an office nearby might be worth trying.

I didn't even think about going in person! There's an office about 30 minutes from me. That might be my backup plan if I can't reach anyone by phone. Thanks for the suggestion!
