EDD paid wrong PFL amount - only 1 day instead of 1 month! Help!
Hey everyone, I'm having a major issue with my Paid Family Leave (PFL) payment. The EDD paid me the wrong amount and I'm not sure what to do. I took a month off work, but they only paid me for one day! I've already confirmed with my company that the date range for my PFL was correct. Has anyone else dealt with this before? Any advice on how to get this fixed? I calculated my average weekly earnings, which are about $5,500. From what I understand, PFL should pay around 60-70% of that. So I'm thinking my weekly benefit should be somewhere between $3,300 to $3,850. But what I got is nowhere near that! I'm planning to call EDD to sort this out. What should I say to them? Any tips on how to handle this conversation? I'm pretty frustrated and don't want to mess this up. Thanks in advance for any help!

Ugh, dealing with EDD is such a pain! I had a similar issue last year. Here's what worked for me: 1. Gather all your docs: pay stubs, previous PFL payments, any emails from EDD. 2. Calculate your expected benefit (looks like you've done this already, good job!) 3. When you call, be polite but firm. Explain the discrepancy clearly. 4. Ask them to walk you through their calculation. 5. If they can't resolve it on the call, ask for a supervisor. 6. Get a reference number for your call! Good luck, hope you get it sorted!

•Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I'll definitely follow these steps. Did it take you long to get it resolved?

•It took about 2 weeks total, but most of that was waiting for them to process the correction. The actual phone call where they agreed to fix it only took about 30 minutes. Stay persistent!

•This is solid advice 💯 I'd add one thing: take notes during the call! Write down who you talked to and what they said. It'll help if you need to follow up later.

•Y'all need to chill. The EDD is understaffed and overworked. Sure, they make mistakes, but most of the people there are trying their best.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

•Nah, it's legit. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Saved me hours of hold time.

•20 bucks tho? That's steep just to talk to someone who should be available for free.

•@profile 8 I get that, but for me, it was worth it. Time is money, ya know? And I was losing my mind trying to get through on my own.

Have you checked if there were any recent changes to the PFL calculation method? Sometimes they update these things and don't communicate it well. Might be worth looking into the latest guidelines on the EDD website.

OP, what industry do you work in? Some industries have different rules for PFL. Also, did you have any other leave (like vacation) that overlapped with your PFL? That could affect the calculation.

•I work in tech, and no, I didn't have any overlapping leave. It was straight PFL for the whole month.

•Hmm, then yeah, sounds like they definitely messed up. Tech salaries can be high, so maybe they hit some kind of cap? But even then, they should've paid more than one day. Def call them!

plot twist: what if OP's company messed up the dates they reported to EDD? 🤔 might be worth double-checking with HR before you go ham on the EDD peeps

•Oh snap, I hadn't even considered that! I'll def check with HR again before I call EDD. Good looking out! 👀

pro tip: if u cant get thru on the phone, try reaching out on Twitter. sometimes their social media team can escalate issues faster than the regular customer service. worth a shot! 🤷♂️

•This actually works! I got my issue resolved in like 2 days after tweeting at them. Public shame is a powerful motivator lol

Okay, let's break this down: 1. Your weekly benefit amount (WBA) is calculated based on your highest-paid quarter in the base period. 2. There's a maximum weekly benefit amount, which is currently $1,620 (as of 2023). 3. Even if your calculated WBA is higher, you can't receive more than the max. So, if your average weekly earnings are $5,500, you'd hit the max benefit. $1,620 per week for 4 weeks would be $6,480 total for a month. If they only paid you for one day, that's about $324 (1/5 of the weekly max). Definitely an error! When you call, ask them: 1. What dates did they have on file for your leave? 2. What was the WBA they calculated for you? 3. Why was the payment only for one day? If they can't give clear answers, ask to speak to a claims specialist or a supervisor. Remember, stay calm but be persistent. Good luck!
